I realize this video was before covid, which has changed so many things, but your message is fabulous. Especially about finding ways around obstacles, and the tidbits about PV that make it so appealing to North American and other expats/snowbirds/digital nomads. I really appreciate your perspectives on really thinking about what is possible and how to make it happen.

I moved to Cuernavaca in 2014 and love it and have lots of friends (Mexican) that I would hate to leave, but I found Puerto Vallarta about 4 years ago and would love to make a move. Problem is that I really can’t afford high rents. Actually, $200-300 USD per month is all I could swing. (I pay $190 USD here. ) I think I’ll just have to keep visiting lol

Thanks for the great videos. I'm also from Northern California (from the city of SFO!) and am looking seriously into to moving to Vallarta in 2024! I envision living there without a car (finally!), but that would probably mean avoiding living to far up in the hills. From your videos, you appear to be in the hills. How do you get around? Take care!
@LivingSimplyinMexico4 жыл бұрын
We walk up the hill... Good exercise that we are used to (5 minutes to the Malecon and 10 minutes from the Malecon). Otherwise taxis, ubers, and buses in non pandemic times are best. If we need to haul something big, it is also pretty easy to find a person with a truck. We do walk a lot. Much happier without a car as there is less stress about parking. Enjoy your moving plans!

Hello, see my other response to your question on buying. In PV, rents can be quite inexpensive in a homes not targeted at tourists. Housing prices have gone up. We don't follow rent much as it is relative inexpensive to own a home relating to taxes and utilities and other recurring fees, so we don't rent our place when not there. This is a good place to look for sale listings: my.flexmls.com/ampimls/search/idx_links/20101209212452924646000000/listings

@@LivingSimplyinMexico that’s not what I meant. I’m referring to your comment about crossing into Oakland. It was problematic….I’ll be more clear. It was problematic, meaning racist.
@LivingSimplyinMexico3 жыл бұрын
@@yusef50, you are judging us and don’t really know who we are, our experiences, or our belief system. It is true that everyone is biased, including you and us, based on our own unique perspectives and perceptions of the world. Our point in the video is that many people stereotype Mexico as unsafe, whereas in reality, just like in the United States, there are safe areas and more at-risk areas. We chose Oakland as an example because we know it, lived it, and it is where we sent our child to public school in one of its toughest areas. Although we are bias like everyone is, we are also data driven. The level of crime in Oakland is much higher than in Puerto Vallarta. (I’ll leave one example at the end here). Racism comes into play if we’d be scared to be in Oakland because of Oakland’s demographics (we are not) or if our perception of why Oakland has more crime is because of race (it is not). That is a completely separate conversation of course for other venues. Our point is simply that Puerto Vallarta is relatively more safe compared to Oakland, and safer than many other areas of the US. If you do not live in or near Oakland, I suggest you visit. It is a wonderful place and has many sides. We truly hope you understand us better through this dialogue. Here is one example of stats that you’ll find consistent in research: www.numbeo.com/crime/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+States&country2=Mexico&city1=Oakland%2C+CA&city2=Puerto+Vallarta&tracking=getDispatchComparison

@@LivingSimplyinMexico it’s exhausting having to educate white, or aspirational white folks about their racism, normalized white supremacy, and problematic behaviors. It’s emotional labor that we shouldn’t have to be doing nor am I’ invested in doing this further with you. The arrogance, and normalized white supremacy are too much. You don’t need to tell me anything about the town, or Mexico. We know all to well about gentrification, settler colonialism, and white entitlement. Trust. If you aren’t open to honestly looking at your statement (s) and growing, that’s fine. Again, we used to that too. Im not going to waste any more time engaging with this settler dynamic.

Hello, you said in your video that you are a physical therapist. Are you accepting patients in PV?
@bewellstaywellnetwork5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori. While I'm not accepting patients in PV at this time, I do have a lot of content online and within an online membership site that is a very affordable and informative way to take a different look at your body. I work much different than in the traditional PT setting in our health care system as I treat the body 3 dimensionally and looking at it as a whole versus in parts. I have a free version of my membership that has a lot of my info in a bit more of a curated format than on my KZbin channel. adawells.info/PBmembership

good video- my husband is 55 and I am 58, we have been here about a year and a half full time, I think it would be harder on me to do what you are doing with the back and forth. how do you jump back into the hustle and bustle of the usa after being here, my husband just made the trip back to the states last month for 2 weeks. He came back telling me, he had anxiety while there, the driving, peoples impatience, he felt unsafe. How do you feel when you go back and how long are you usually back?

We are in PV roughly a week a month. For me (Stefan) the opposite is the problem as I have to deal with remote meetings. Tough to do with all the fun, noise, and life around! The weekends are the best when I can truly relax. As we mentioned in our videos, we really fell into our situation that has been wonderful, but it does feel like we are living dual lives that can be quite fun and enriching, but also quite busy! We look forward to the day when we can fly less and be in PV for longer periods. Until then a little compartmentalization is in order between the chill us and the go go us!

I sooooo wish I was in your shoes. I would trade all of my possessions and wealth to be in your guy’s shoes I love PV so much. Please elaborate more on what you do to make $$$. I have a decent savings but not enough to sustain for decades. I’ve been going to Mexico for 12 years now and I 100% agree with you guys on safety. 100% agree on your guys stress comments. I have a house in Mexico unfortunately it’s not in PV. My wife is from a small town in Michoacan so that is where we made our house but I know what you guys mean if you spend a month or two in Mexico your perception of thing starts to change and you aren’t as concerned about buying the latest and greatest like we are here north of the border. As far as “Stuff” goes I think of George Carlin here “NOB” it’s all about how much “stuff” you have but while I spend time here I constantly think to myself sell or give away everything that won’t fit into 2 suitcases and be free. Like you guys said the more “stuff” you have the more it owns you. Soo much agree with you about being fully immersed in another life culture & language. For the past 12 years I have been going to Mexico every year for a month every year and after 1 month of living there I can converse fluently with the locals but the part that sucks is after being away for a year I forget everything I learned the previous year. As far as your retirement / money section goes how much did your guys house cost if it’s not too personal? If so totally ignore this part. But I saw your guy’s house vid and I was in love not too fancy and not too cheap. I loved your guy’s house simple and perfect. In fact it was It a little bit more than what me and my wife would need. I would be so happy to just have a simple studio apartment in PV I’ll be in PV in Oct and I can’t wait. I’ll be in “down town” hopefully will run into you guys keep the vids coming luv you guys god bless.

Jim Jones thanks for the detailed comments! I (Stefan) do consulting work which allows for quite a bit of flexibility, but I also need to be available anywhere any time. Ada is a physical therapist. Since I travel a bit, this helps to defer our cost with miles and southwest’s companion pass (topic for another video). Our house was inexpensive, but housing prices have gone up since the fall of ‘17 a bit. As mentioned in some other comments, think cost of a Tesla for the house + cost of a Prius for the work we did on it. Key really is to buy a basic property and use the great, inexpensive contractors to fix up the property. Hope this helps!

Jim Jones, as Stefan mentioned, I am a physical therapist, but I own my business (since 2004) where I have set it up in a way that empowers those who work there so I don't need to micromanage. I have also worked over the past 3-5 years or so to create an online presence in my field to be able to use my knowledge to help others without having to be there in person. You can check out my KZbin Channel by clicking on my pic if you're curious about that aspect.

Jim, (Stefan here) One thing that caught my eye- Your comment on the idea of savings. I don’t have all the answers, but here is my take: I was brought up with the principle that you retire when you have enough money, and burn down that money until you have none, and that you are a true winner if you run out of money at your death. I’ve fundamentally changed my view after getting rid of the idea of “retirement” as a goal. At some point Ada and I may have enough money to retire - we may have enough money now. I am not sure. The challenge is that everyone (even the affluent- Not us) fear that they never have enough money to retire - Causing people to live their lives differently. Also, I’d like to leave money for our daughter so she can take more risks and follow her own passions. To me what this all means is that it is not the money in the bank that is a major factor in our decision to spend significant time in Mexico, but it is our ability to keep up with our cash flow to stay positive for the majority of the rest of our lives - by generating new money. Since I am still working a US job, I have the time to think about what I can do eventually in Mexico for work. Still investigating, but as Ada mentions, at least now we’ve setup flexibility in our lives to be in Mexico now. If we keep our costs down where we are still happy and need less income, that is where the magic will happen. Hope this helps in some way and that after my tall glass of Negra Modelo this still makes sense. 😊
