Thank you for this brilliant video and all the other ones you have made and shared here. I am fascinated by anatomy. Now, however, I sought out your videos about the ear so I can better understand terms in my otolaryngologist's reports. I had a sudden dramatic loss of hearing in one ear about three weeks ago, with the difference of about 20dB compared with an audiologist's graph from a couple of years ago. I already had hearing loss at the frequencies between ca. 2000Hz and 6000Hz in both ears. (As a professional musician and singer, I know that this includes the singer's formant. All of this has been highly stressful for me.) But this new loss is at the lower frequencies. !!! I was examined by a nurse practitioner who saw the start of an infection as well as a shiny bulge indicating fluid behind my tympanic membrane. She prescribed an antibiotic (cefdinir) that evidently cleared up the infection and fluid. HOWEVER, the antibiotic did not improve my hearing, the distorted perception of pitch, the feeling of fullness in my ear (i.e., it feels blocked), the strange noise when I shake my head "yes" or "no" (it sounds like a large bubble of air being released into deep water --woOow-- with each change of direction of head movement), and the perception that someone speaking to me from in front of me is simultaneously heard as an echo like the sound of a television in a distant room. Same rhythm as the speech I am listening to, but indistinct and as if high up and behind me. The otolaryngologist doesn't know what is causing these distortions and drop in acuity. He has me on a two-week course of high dose prednisone, to see whether that helps. So far no change after 5 days. I'm a singer and conductor, and feel very lopsided, bifurcated, monaural. This is distressing. Anyway, that's why I am watching your videos now.

The sponge like area of the temporal bone may be an acoustic augmentation. Assisting the middle ear in sound wave transmission. Much as an auditorium might reverberate sound waves to a focal point.

Hey Dr Webster, I got slapped in my left ear one day. The person's hand perfectly sealed my ear and sent a pressure wave into my ear. Ever since I have had hyperacusis in my left hear, loudish noise is quite painful, and I instantly got tinnitus, which I never had prior. I got slapped a little over 2 yrs ago now and I still have both problems. Do you have any suggestions for me? It has had a profound impact on my life, because I can't enjoy concerts, night clubs, sporting events, even some video games. Thanks : (

what causes the crackling, popping in your ear when you not popping it on purpose? my doctor says it is excess mucus, what do you think? she wanted me to take decongestant and advil which helps for a while, can gerd contribute to this I have a problem with that.

A parabolic dish shape of the tympanic membrane. The ossicle bones situated to amplify the vibrations of this membrane. The round window allows for compression of cochlear fluid. It can bulge out within its operating range.

I have tinnitus first it was ear pressure and clogged ears then it was swoosh sounds then it was warm and numb sensations in my eardrums then it was hearing loss a little bit and a frequency made the world like turn down volume then it was the ear pressure getting to a exploding type vibe for ears then it was outside noise hurting my ears then it was my voice hurting hurting my ears then it was blister type feelings in my ears and pus feeling and it hurts and then it was a ringing sound in my ear (tinnitus). I need a procedure done for my ears or a cleaning of my Eustachian tube or something my middle ear has pressure and my ear drums hurt they burn too and feel numb what procedure do I need to do I saw a dude say he got like his nasal passage stuff cleaned and he has no tinnitus now. I that and ear pressure and ear pain. All that. Clogged ears. What the heck procedure should I do

I have a very diferent question ..so a bug got in my ear i put oil in it but i think it got into the tempatic tube ?? Is that posible and will it flush its self ?? I dont feel or hear it moving after i put in the oil but i never got it out and noone can see it i have a ear probe thing with a light and it seems to have disapeired 🤷 idk if its dead in the other side of the membraine and if i should be conserned

Nothing can pass through the tympanic membrane unless it has a hole torn in it (which usually causes pain and some hearing loss).

Hi Sam when I get muscus from my sinus (I suffer from sinus issues) in my middle ear can it get into the inner ear via the oval window? and cause balance issues ? when at its worse meaning sinus pressure and mucus build up I get off balance alot like being drunk ?. I asked my ENT for tubes inserted into my ear to try and take the pretreatment out of middle ear he refused I have had them once and they was a god send.

No, the oval window separates the inner ear fluid space from the middle ear air space. The stapes bone transmits vibrations from the other small bones and the tympanic membrane to the oval window, causing pressure waves on the inner ear (cochlea) side, allowing us to detect sounds. The oval window would have to be torn to connect the spaces, and I would expect this to have other signs and symptoms related to hearing. I'm just guessing from the functional anatomy here - ENT doctors are way better at this than me and understand this in far more clinical detail than I do.

I had a ear infection and so they say that’s what made a hole in my eardrum.. I had a tympanoplasty and still developed another hole..had a second tympanoplasty by another Ent and again it developed a hole..so now the second doctor is sending me to another doctor for a Estachian tube balloon surgery..why didn’t they try that first if it’s what is causing back pressure and blowing out my eardrum??? I’m looking for the Third ENT to do the 3rd Tympanoplasty,,,ridiculous
