My experience exactly. The Hebrew school I went to treated the Israeli flag like it was a Jewish flag. No celebration of Judaism was without an Israeli flag. It never occurred to me as a child that Zionism might be unjust. I was certainly not encouraged to explore that question. But then I grew up and realized that believing you deserve something doesn’t give you the right to take it from someone else. Israel is colonialism and colonialism is wrong.

The Israeli flag is based on the talit (prayer shawl) and is the flag of the Jewish state.Most Jewish schools have Israeli flags and most synagogues have Israeli flags. Jews have lived in the land of Israel/Palestine for thousands of years. The Jewish community of Hebron dates back to the 7th century and the Jewish community in Jerusalem is far older. Israel is not "colonialism". When I was a child the Israeli Olympic team was taken hostage and tortured on live TV then murdered. I was a teenager during Entebbe and I was in college when the PFLP hijacked the Achille Lauro. n case you didn't notice on October 7 2023 over 1400 Israeli civilians were slaughtered by Hamas. Many were activists who helped Palestinians by driving them from the Gaza border to receive medical care at Israeli hospitals. Hamas killed them too, and raped them, and cut their heads off and filmed themselves playing with their heads. I hope the hostages Hamas took will be released safely.

When we were growing up in occupied Jerusalem, the people seeking to expel us from our neighborhood were Jewish, and their organizations often had “Jewish” in their name. So were the people who stole our home, scattered our furniture in the street, and burned my baby sister’s crib. The judges banging their gavels in favor of our expulsion were also Jewish, and so were the lawmakers whose laws facilitated and systematized our dispossession. The bureaucrat issuing-and sometimes revoking-our blue ID cards was a Jew, and I especially despised him because a stroke of his pen stood between my father and my father’s great-great-grandfather’s city. As for the soldiers that were frisking us to check for those IDs, some of them were Druze, some Muslim, most of them Jewish, and all of them, according to my grandmother, were “godless bastards.” Those who administered the rifles and handcuffs, those who wrote the meticulous and murderous urban plans were-you guessed it. This was no secret. We lived under the rule of the self-proclaimed “Jewish State.” Israeli politicians have exhausted this line, and their international peers nodded along. The army declared itself a Jewish army and marched under what it has called a Jewish flag. Jerusalem city councilmen boasted “tak[ing] house after house” because “the bible says that this country belongs to the Jewish people,” and Knesset members sang similar tunes. These legislators weren’t fringe or far-right: the Israeli nation-state law explicitly enshrines “Jewish settlement” as a “national value … to encourage and promote.” Still, though this was no secret, we were instructed to treat it as such, sometimes by our parents, sometimes by well-meaning solidarity activists. We were instructed to ignore the Star of David on the Israeli flag, and to distinguish Jews from Zionists with surgical precision. It didn’t matter that their boots were on our necks, and that their bullets and batons bruised us. Our statelessness and homelessness were trivial. What mattered was how we spoke about our keepers, not the conditions they kept us under-blockaded, surrounded by colonies and military outposts-or the fact that they kept us at all. Language was more of a minefield than the border between Syria and the occupied Golan Heights, and we, children at the time, were expected to hop around them, hoping we don’t accidentally step on an explosive trope that would discredit us. Using the “wrong words” had the magical ability to make things disappear; the boots, bullets, batons, and bruises all become invisible if you say anything in jest or in fury. She got angry at me when I said the attitudes and problems were more widespread in Israeli society, and she refused to listen to what I tried to tell her. I would like to show her your comment. Can you imagine? A Jew criticizes Israel and Zionism, and a non-Jew gets offended! But that's how pervasive Zionist mythology and lies and brainwashing are in the US. One question: were you quoting the poet, or was this your own experience? If it's a quote, is there another place I can find it to show/send to her? Either way, I'm sorry for anyone having to go through such hell. I saw that video of Yacov and it makes me sick. Many Jews seem totally unfamiliar with Jewish law and ethics.

She could be telling my story.My family comes from Jerusalem/Jaffa. My great grandmother owned a compound where the animals (camels,goats,etc) stayed in the center and around them were apartments which grt. grandma rented out to all kinds of folks from all over the world. My grandmother was married in a Bedouin wedding dress. They were there from late 1700's to 1900. They all spoke Arabic and french and my grandmother and her sister were educated at the Rothchild school for girls, where they learned beautiful British English. They only left because the 5 sons wanted to seek their fortunes. They did well, except my part of the family. In Jr. High the recruiters came into my school and taught us a few Israeli dances. They wanted us to sign up for the birthright trip. I knew instinctively that I did not want to go and I didn't. I was going to Israel in 1967. First I was stuck in Scopje, Yugoslavia during the Greek coup and then I was on the Ferry when some young people were coming off the ferry and told me about the 1967 6 day war. I got off. Since then, I have been solidly behind the Palestinian cause. Justice means justice for All.

@Nick P Since Jews were dispersed to many parts of the world after being exiled by the Romans, then of course some mixing with different local populations went on over the years. But based on what I've read in different sources, the three main Jewish groups, Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Mizrahi, all have similar Levantine ancestry to at least some degree. Although of course the Ashkenazi (European) are more mixed with European dna, but they have Levantine dna too. The Mizrahi (Middle Eastern and North African) probably have the closest ancestry to the original biblical Jews. In addition, converts are considered to be fully part of the Jewish people. I think that is the case for the Ethiopians, I'm not sure. Jewish identity is a kind of complex subject, but it is definitely more than just a religion.

Yes. This lady understood at young age that we're all related to each other. When we inflict harm to vulnerable others, we lose our own humanity. So sad we haven't learned much yet and those who pretend to give us 'great' lessons in 'democracy' are precisely those who have become nazi butchers - again, history rewriting itself to the worse. But she and many others give us a glimpse of HOPE. There's none left for thousands of poor families who lost their beloved last children and grandchildren in Gaza. Thank you so much dearest Maya for your honesty and integrity. As a matter of fact my best, best friend at my school was a Jew and we never had a problem together. My concern and anger really is related to what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. I can't imagine the amount of atrocities, jailing, killing and bombing that Israel is doing to the Palestinians who lived in these lands for thousands of years.

@@true1330 Well said, but we cannot justify what happened in the whole situation regarding the cartoon about our Prophet Mohammed (SAW). What they did was wrong, killing someone for something like that is frowned upon by Allah, instead we should pray for the people who create these cartoons to receive hidayat (guidance), even if they don't accept Islam maybe they'll stop seeing us as the enemy, I mean any logical person can see that if 1/4 of the world is Muslim, and if Muslims are supposed to kill non-Muslims, how come there's still so many Non-Muslims out there? If they read the Qur'an and Authentic Hadith they would know about all the instances of our Prophet Mohammed's (SAW) interactions with non-Muslims, in which he was always respectful and kind, and even allowed the Christians to pray inside of his Masjid in Medina. Let's also not forget about the Jews who the Prophet SAW vowed to protect and who Muslims continued to do for centuries. It's no coincidence that the Golden Age of Judaism was during the Golden Age of Islam. We need to rebuild our bridges with non-Muslims, we need to show the people what the prophet Mohammed (SAW) was like through our actions. They claim he was a murderer, a madman, all other nonsense astaghfirulah but if we show them we good Adhab (manners), we treat them fairly and warmly and educate them on the real ways of our religion, Islam, many will willingly accept it as we can see when we do dawah, and many will stop in their ways of hatred, and those who continue to hate will be exposed within their communities as the bigots and ignorant people they really are.

@@true1330 Yes my point was that we should keep to our religion but the best way to do Dawah is not to tell people our religion but to show them! If I tell you 1 + 1 = 2 you can just say ok and move on but if I show you practically you will have no choice but to agree and believe 1 + 1 = 2. Same with Islam, we believe we are the one true faith and Allah is the One true God, but if we tell non-Muslims this they'll say OK and move on. To be accurate - actually the Zionist education system didn't teach her that oppressing Palestinians was justified. She had to work out for herself that Palestinians were oppressed, by analogy with her own family's experience in Israel facing discrimination because they came from Morocco. She said Palestinians weren't even mentioned - only "hostile Arab nations." That's how the Zionist mindset works - only one people belong in Palestine. The Palestinians don't exist for them. In so far as the Palestinians are acknowledged at all, they are seen as aliens - certainly not as a nation.

We keep her in prayer of course it is not urs never has bn! To go about killing ppl is not a part of being Jewish and I am so so so glad she has clarified that! Like i say it is time that we see who is really behind all of this! Normal ppl just Dd on't do what the Zionist are doing! It is a polical party with a particiular agenda and have used the Jewish ppl and their history to further their agenda! Their cruelty knows no bounds! In this dark and very depressing time, with many thousands of Palestinians already dead and many more likely to die, I find some glimmer of encouragement in the immense bravery of anti-Zionist Jewish people like Maya. It was Jewish people like her who, many years ago, taught me about the true nature of Zionism and why opposition to Zionism is inseparable from the fight for liberation of all peoples, Jews included.
