Just bought this with the 5900x CPU and a 980 Pro M.2. Yes, I know it's overkill for my needs. But when I build, I always look to build a system that I won't be regretting in a couple years. Like the last build I did, I intend on getting at least 5 years from this before the tech starts getting old and outdated.

Umm you can look for dust or scratches. But sellers should be honest. If you can try to get a dark hero new off Newegg or Amazon or anywhere else that’s a retailer. You can also try new egg business which has a separate account creation system. That dark hero shortages shouldn’t be as prevalent any longer.

what was the budget of your pc?
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
@@qcremi4357 Mine? I gave myself around a $5,000 USD budget. I had most of it saved up by the time the RTX 3000 and Zen 3 series came out. Dominator RAM and the 1TB and 2TB nvme drives came after. I already had the PC-O11 Dynamic XL pretty much bought when it came out. I'm reusing the fans from my previous build as well as radiators. The CPU block is new but I had that since the fall but knew I'd be using it for this build. Having said that, I did add some things. Decided to get the Torque fittings over the classic from EKWB and I added a Distro plate over the Corsair XD5 and decided to water cool the GPU as the 3090 Strix gets stupid hot. I'd say this added another 1000-1500 easy. I did sell about $1300.00 worth of parts from my old build, so that puts me back to the 5k budget . . . maybe. Add all accessories and crap I had to buy after the fact and price still is pretty steep. Check out my PC build videos to get a bigger picture of the parts used. I have 2 up so far. I'll be doing a full run-down of the cost of this computer in a later video--it's very contrary to my more budget oriented approach to the builds I've been making for the channel. Then again, I needed a PC to handle editing and video creation in addition to gaming.

Hi i realy like your review of this board! Maybe i did not listen carefully but i think you did not say a word about the Dynamic OC switcher witch is a feature of this board. The Dos Oc Switcher and the passive chipset cooer where the main reasons i bought this board the Dos OC switcher makes this board unique on the market and that partially explains the high price.. But you are right its still too expensive! Best regards!
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I didn't mention anything about the DOS OC Switcher, you're correct. Funny thing is, I don't think that's even mentioned in the manual or on the product site. I myself just learned about it watching an overclock video. It's a neat tool that's for sure! Personally, I don't really want to overclock since this is my workhorse computer, but I do want to use the PBO2 curve optimizer to undervolt to see if I can't lower temperatures/power consumption while still achieving higher frequencies or the same as I'm currently getting. I watched an Optimum Tech video about it, and while he uses an MSI board, I think I can figure things out. I'll probably make a video on my attempts at doing it. :)
@RedPillBroadcast2 жыл бұрын
That’s one big reason I bought it too! I use the setting on my Crosshair Viii Extreme and now on my new x570s Dark Hero viii build. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but running a 5950x for 3d rendering, modeling (solidworks), S3D for my 3d printing and vid production (OBS with 4K cam recording while streaming vids, & Adobe editing) for my TikTok, helping switch on the fly from my manual OC to PBO depending on workload comes in handy - Helps me gain about 11% performance on avg, so that’s a nice chunk off an OCd water cooled 5950x

@MiddleofKnowhere2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the watch and comment! Quick question for you, does your computer ever randomly shut off when the GPU is really being hit in a game? Mine will unless I undervolt the GPU. I have the Strix OC 3090. It's watercooled. I have a 1000W 80+ Titanium seasonic PSU. I wonder if maybe even that's not enough wattage for the 3090 and 5950x . . .
@edamnaf92652 жыл бұрын
@@MiddleofKnowhere I have had *ZERO* shut off issues with this machine.....My card never needs undervolting. I bet your Seasonic (great PSU, btw) is just a bit underpowered for the system. Try a 1300W if you have one.

Great review. Thanks. I have this mobo till January 21. CPU (5900x) and gpu(2080) are water cooled. Case CM.H500M has positive pressure as good as it gets with some TT and Artic P series fans. No rads inside the case. Vrm temps never drops below 50 C at idle even full speed of fans. No OC performed yet. Vrm temps have reached about max 60 degrees under full stress test over 1 hour with prime95 or kombustor(msi tool). But, when a fan directly blow air over vrms then temps are dropping even to 35 degrees at idle, 42 degrees at full load.
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome to hear. I’ll be using a dynamic xl with a rad and intakes at top and rad and intakes at bottom and then exhaust on the side. Hopefully the top fans will be sufficient on the vrms despite pulling in warm air from the radiator.

Really wanted ASUS again as im currently using a ASUS trx40 e gaming mobo. Brilliant board. But as im not really utilising threadripper i thought the 5950x will be more than good enough for my gaming and the occasional bit of CAD work. Sad to let go of this board although the dark hero does also look excellent. However the new system is going to have an EK custom loop for the Cpu so i am excited for that! it will be the first ever custom loop and my third ever pc build. also just ordered a MSI 3090 Suprim X and i figured this board would help get the most out of it. While 3600MHz is a great spot for Rysen 3000, and 5000 CPU's, AMD has stated that 4000MHz is the Sweet Spot for the New 5000 series CPU's especially with Smart Access Memory feature when you Have a 5000 CPU with a 6000 GPU. AMD has also stated that G Skill is optimised for use with AMD CPU's. I have noticed quite a difference with the 4000MHz(G Skill Royal) with 5900x and 6900xt with the Dark Hero.
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
With 4000 you won't be able to maintain 1:1 infinity fabric at least from what I've seen. You might be able to with 37xx and 3800. Additionally, the price to performance of going from 3600 to 4000 isn't viable for everyone. For instance there's a $40.00 price difference in Corsair Vengeance RGB 3600 to 4000 (both CL18) on Amazon. That $40.00 spent may not be worth it for some considering you'll maybe see a 3% increase in FPS. And the price difference gets even worse the higher capacity kits you look at. SAM is also available with Nvidia now as resizable bar IIRC no or are these two differnent things? Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm always happy to learn more and be correct so I can be more informed! I'll be the first to admit, I'm no good at overclocking or futzing with infinity fabrics and such, so any resources you can share would be greatly appreciated.

@@MiddleofKnowhere Very ! After almost 6 years with my trustful 6700K and a 1080Ti, it's time to build a new config so I'm going for a 5950X with a 3090. After checking on internet forums/YT etc. for a week, I've decided to go with the Dark Hero although I've been quite reluctant with any setup concerning AMD 5000 Series due to the many people complaining about RAM instability issues. Then I came to a conclusion that most threads about the issues are from 6+ months ago AND, with heavy overclockers. I'm going for 64Gb RAM, 4x 16Gb G. Skill Trident Z Neo 3600 (16-19-19-39) or (16-16-16-36). I'm not planning to go over 3600 by any means so I hope I don't have any problem ! Wish me luck and once again, thanks for the Dark Hero excelent video !

Thanks for that very informative review of the board, just received mine from NewEgg, I also just bought - GSkill Aegis 64GB DDR4 3200. not the 3600 for my Ryzen 5 5600 CPU, will this work ok? 4 matched sticks of 16GB=64GB

Glad the review helped! Yes this RAM will work great! You can also see if you can overclock them to 3600 if you're of a mind to do so. :) I had G.Skill Trident Z RGB RAM in my previous build. Great RAM.

Excellent! loved this review. Very sober, direct, concise, and professional :) Can't wait to get my own!!! No budget here...well, once I got the chance to pick up a 3080 ti fe at MSRP. Only took 6 hours waiting in line at the Bestbuy four towns over, starting at 3am on a Thursday >:( Got everything but the CPU I want. one more month and I can pick up a 5900X :P The 5600X will do in the mean time, and make a worthy replacement for the R5 1400 DINOSAUR in my current PC when I pass it on. will a 5600x work on an A320M motherboard.... . ... . .. lol

Thanks! Glad you got that GPU. I wanted to go to the BB near me that was doing the release too but I couldn't camp over night 60 miles away as I had to get my kid to school the next morning! That's cool you're saving up for the 5900x. Keep an eye out as prices for the Zen 3 CPUs seem to be going down which is good for everyone! Thanks for watching. :)

About the request for Hybrid 4-pin request at 8:27, i have the Hero (non-dark) and in the BIOS I can chose if each header is in PWM or DC mode, even in the “AIO” labeled port. Not sure if that’s what you meant though. Good vid. Information density is just right 👌
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Every time I do a mobo video I know I’m being very heavy on the info and Maude’s voice from The Big Lebowski runs through my head, “ He’s very thorough . . .” Lol. I love finding all the information and putting it in one spot for people. Regarding the hybrid PWM gigabyte has, this is different than what you do in the bios. The hybrid set up means every pwm header can take any pwm item without being specific. For instance I could put my CPU cooler fan in a regular header without the mobo having a fit saying no cpu cooler plugged in. It’s a small thing, but I think is a neat feature and allows people new to pc building to have some margin of error. :) Thank you for watching!

Great question. I don’t think you need the antennas plugged in they just help if you’re far from the router. I had mine working fine on wifi about 20 feet away.

Hey there! Great review! After watching this a while a go I decided to buy a Dark Hero for my new PC, it's arriving in a week. I wanted to ask you about the M.2 slots and heatsinks in particular. I'm planning on getting 2 SN850s for this build but I can't find them with their propietary heatsinks in my country. Have you checked or noticed how well the included heatsink works, if they keep the m.2s sufficiently cool? I might want to get a third party heatsink just in case, I've seen people recommend the Sabrent M.2 Rocket SB-HTSS , MHQJRH or the ineo Aluminum, but I'm not sure how much room for them is there in this Motherboard. Thanks and again, fantastic video!! Cheers

Thanks for watching. Yes i use the stock heatsinks on the board. I too have two sn850s. Temps seem fine and I’ve experienced no degradation in performance.

Well one thing you failed to mention here is the fact that the BIOS is hardly talked about at all in the users manual. It mainly says don't change settings in a single page. None of the BIOS options are clarified or talked about at all. Which is a good segue into one of the most important options the BIOS has which makes this motherboard a stand out amongst the boards for higher core count CPUs if you do a fair amount of production work loads. The boards ability through BIOS to switch between PBO (single core high frequency loads (gaming)) and all core overclocked loads at not quite as high frequencies as you can get with PBO based on CPU amperage draw and OC settings in BIOS.
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
From my experience, no motherboard maker has had good documentation on their BIOS, in-depth how-tos and what-ares on what every option is, how to clearly overclock or optimize within it, etc. ASUS videos have mostly focused on doing such things within AI Suite 3 instead, which doesn't give the granular customization fiddling in a BIOS does. Additionally, I don't have the OC experience, and am still researching it on my own to try and figure things out, so I would not posit such information without being fully knowledgeable in the first place as I don't want to misguide anyone either.

You want to give props to ASUS, but they are charging almost $500 for a mobo with only TWO m.2 slots, no 2x2 gen three USB ports, and don't include ninety degree I/O like MOST of the other premium boards include. For this price range, ALL of those things should be included. So NO! No props to ASUS for charging a premium for this board, and leaving out all the premium features... Still a decent review though.

Hello, I have the same mother, the problem I have is that sometimes when I turn on the PC, the GPU does not recognize me, it does not show an image but it starts Windows, since I log in remotely when I check device manager, no GPU appears, I hit restart and there it gives me an image and take the rtx 3090 msi, update bios, reinstall win. I don't know if it will be some problem with the pcie lines.

Hey MoK. Question, please: Have you had the USB drop-out issues with this board please? Which Ryzen CPU have you paired it with? And which version of the BIOS are you using? Thanks.
@MiddleofKnowhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I haven’t had any usb drop out issues as much as I did with the x470 Crosshair hero. I’m also using the latest bios (non-beta). I’ve only used my 5950x with it. Having said all that the only usb issues I’ve encountered is my mouse not working within the bios but it’s plugged into my rgb mousepad which is then plugged into the rear USB port. Additionally, on occasion my usb sd card reader will drop when trying to transfer large files if I have it plugged into my powered usb hub or the front of the lian li case this also happened on my old dynamic as well so I wonder if it’s the case or the low-profile adapter I use to connect the front usb. If I plug the sd card reader I to the rear I/o no issues. Also I’ve had no issues with anything plugged into the rear usb just what I described above. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Just to add as well, I'm not sure what is the deal with my mouse not working in BIOS any longer as it did initially, but after maybe the first BIOS update it stopped. I can use the keyboard fine though so that's good. Updating BIOS and setting XMP has been a breeze. I need to get in there and make sure PBO is enabled and learn how to undervolt the CPU as AMD tends to push too much causing higher temps even at idle. There are some decent videos out there I'll have to find and give a watch. I am def a noob to OC'ing. Overall though this motherboard has given me 0 issues. No BSOD's yet (knock on wood) and it's using all 4 sticks of 3600MHz RAM at CL16 without an issue, something that couldn't be said with my x470 + 2700X combo but that came down to the memory controller of the Zen+ CPUs more than the motherboard. Going back to USB though, I've got about 8 things plugged in directly to the rear I/O, plus a keyboard into the monitor and then my powered USB hub, I'll put that SD card reader into which is hit or miss as mentioned above. So yeah, pretty decent USB experiences so far. One thing I have noticed though is the ASUS NoiseCanceling AI service/software interferes with my SoundBlaster X7 and for some reason when recording via Audacity or in Discord my mic won't get picked up. If I end task, everything works. This is unfortunate as I want to be able to block out my keyboard with noise suppression, but do not know how to get things to play nice. I haven't plugged my headset directly into my motherboard to see if that would work with the noisecancelling and I can't seem to find the Nvidia software via Geforce Experience. I have to just tinker more. :)
