It's weird Asus shifted the Bios USB port to where it is now. On my Crosshair Hero VII they actually separated it and put it next to the clear CMOS and BIOS flash buttons which to me was a great move and made plugging in my USB stick with my various BIOS versions simple to do without having to fumble around looking for the right port amongst a sea of exactly identical ports when I have my machine sat say close to a wall.

considering you'd only be bios flashbacking before putting a new CPU in, they probably assume your computer isn't just sitting up next to a wall. for regular bios updates you can use any port, that's just for doing it no CPU installed.

@@veritas6936 and what exactly is "sub par" on this board ? and before you say VRM, Buildzoid calculated heat generation on Master to be at 22w at 200A while on this board it ended up being 20W ... while shutting of unneeded phases and moving the efficiency curve up by doing so ending up at 19W ... so why exactly would LESS efficient VRM of Master be better than one on this board ? Both VRMS are gross OVERKILL for what is needed ... other than VRM the features are basically identical ...

i agree even a very little airflow helps a ton: i got a 670 watercooled and the vrm just gets hit by a little breeze coming in the grid on the back of the case (i run negative pressure, fight me) and the difference is 30C LESS with the case panel installed: 80C with no airflow, 50C with light breeze.

negative pressure is awesome if you don't care about dust. i ran an s340 a couple years ago, 280mm rad in the front , noctua 140 in the top and noctua 120 in the rear. temps were amazing with that config cause both (aircooled) GPU and radiator got fresh room temperature air.

I spent the past week looking up X470 motherboards and watching videos on this channel. I was initially going to buy the ASUS X470 prime and I watched the buildzoid video about it which changed my mind. My budget is a little bit tight (I can't really save more so don't go telling me buy an X570 / b550 or Ryzen 3000 cpu) so I settled for the MSI X470 GAMING PLUS because I saw Buildzoid say that its a decen't board. I hope I didn't make a mistake because I've literally looked at a sh*t ton of videos about various boards. I'm changing over to AMD after being with Intel for the past 12 years and I have been using Asus motherboards with 17 years.

You have a new subscriber Sir! Thanks a ton for providing an excellent technical review! I just bought this board without WIFI. Crazy price gouging on that model, but I just don't need the WIFI. I do plenty of R&D with VMs for IT studies, & some gaming. I got it because I have my second Strix B450-F going in for RMA and figured the Crosshair VIII Hero was the best AMD board ASUS makes, without many unneeded features. I want the durability, diagnostic features, all the USB 10Gbps, and PCIe 4, which should future-proof my build for the next 5 years or more. I'd likely only use the overclocking features whenever a Ryzen 5 3600 gets a bit dated. I've had very bad luck with ASUS boards in the last 10 years and hoping I can finally get a board that'll last. They have great features that I actually use, compared to the competition. At least their heat-sinks have some surface area. Also, one thing I didn't understand was if I need to use the extra 4 pin power connector when using a fan over the CPU. =)

This is the board I'm likely to get. I currently have an 1800x in a CH6H, and plan on going with either the 12c or _maybe_ the 16c. The 16c would need to have a significant clock speed advantage, and if it's coming down to binning, I think we're going to have a 1700x vs 1800x thing where they hit the same clocks but this time with a few fewer cores.

On my Crosshair VI Hero, the CLR CMOS button on the back also acts the same as that safe boot button. I was memory overclocking, went too far, couldn't get back into the BIOS. So went to CLR CMOS, and to my surprise, the BIOS saved ALL my settings!!! So good!

Giga really is winning me over with their latest [public] decisions; still gonna wait for the release and reviews of everything, and enough time for the public to mess around with them(a month or two probably)

If Asus wants to get the best transient response they should look at the ISL69138 and ISL99227-B's with ISL6617A's Intersils (RENESAS) website sure has some strong claims. This is what they say. "The ISL69138 uses the Renesas proprietary digital, linear, synthetic, current modulation scheme to achieve (the industry’s best combination of transient response and ease of tuning) while addressing the challenges of powering the latest generation of Intel microprocessors. I'd like to see more in-depth between the Hero and the Formula. As a watercooler, sounds like the Formula, at the rumored price, is bonkers, and as the Man said, is totally unnecessary. And the Hero with a mono block would be overkill and save a couple hundred bucks. I'll stay tuned in.

Question about the 4 pin plus 8 pin power connector. My brother has a gigabyte x470 gaming k7 and he would always leave the 4 pin unconnected. So we notice the board only last 1 month before it stops working. So on his 5th replacement he decided to plug up both and haven't had a problem ever since. He has a ryzen 1700x. Does the one on gigabyte have to be both plugged up?

no, none of them require the 4 pin being connected.. so either he's hooking up something wrong, using the wrong 8 pin or something is wrong with the psu but you should not have to use the 4 pin.

I called customer support they sent my case to a higher up in the company and gigabyte told us to plug it up. Ever since he plug it up he hasn't had any problems. The board has been running fine for 6+ months compared to only lasting 1 month.

It's a year later, and the prices are better... So I managed to snag a crosshair VIII formula... And from what I'm looking at the VRM here, I don't really need to run water through that water block. Still going to anyway, but it's nice to know it's not needed

@@SULFURIOUS controller AND motherboard layout and build quality ... and the frequency is just ONE part of the memory OC, voltage and TIMINGS are the other and you might be able to hit 3733 on any board but at what voltage and at what timings is what will make or break the x470 vs x570 question for me.

I notice the chokes don't really get coverage on mobo breakdowns. The mobo manufacturers love to quote that they're alloy chokes, or rated for a certain number of amps, but I can't really tell what they do or how they affect the VRM quality. (I've tried to read up on what they actually do, but I can't really find good info that's also comprehensible to a layman such as myself.) If these are at all important, I'd love to hear about them on future breakdowns.

How many SATA slots and m.2 slots can be populated simultaneously? When watching your other videos you said you think two of the SATA ports will be disabled when using the M.2 slots. After reading the manual thoroughly I do not see any asterisks or notes explaining that any SATA ports will be disabled when using M.2. With older boards like the Z97X, for example, when using an M.2 Slot would disable a SATA port it would have an Asterisk and would explain this and which ports would be disabled when using M.2. Do they not include notes or asterisks in the manuals explaining when using m.2 will disable SATA ports anymore? Or perhaps does this mean that all 8 SATA ports and both M.2 can be populated Simultaneously?

One of the (biggest) justification for the massive price hike on the x570 as opposed to x470 or x370 is that. the x570 needs a higher quality pcb 8+ layers because of pcie 4.0. I personally think its nothing but money grab, nevertheless, can you verify that this board is actually 8+ layers? There's nothing new here that the CH7 doesn't have. I'm still trying to figure out the justification for the massive price hike.

I have a C7H. The way ASUS handles PBO is by far the worst of all the X470 boards I've tried.

main reason i got this was all them usb ports 17+ 2 type c in total i got ports for days 4 on my monitor 2 plus a type c on my case 11 plus a type c on the MB do i need that many no do i want that many yes

Am looking to buy this motherboard, 3 things i wanna clear out are: 1) As you mentioned that higher RAM speed with above 32 GB might not be recommended, if am right, would it be still good to have a 32 GB higher speed and later maxed out? 2) This motherboard doesn't have HDMI or VGA port to connect monitor, so how to connect dual monitors, as i want to use 2 monitors? Graphic card i think, 1 monitor can be connected? 3) Is liquid cooler really required or the Stock Cooler fan which comes with AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is enough? ... OR how about a Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler?

if power stages are at 80c, water cooling surely will take heat from the case off, being that water absorbs the heat. Not saying that its necessary but still, if you have loop, why not put vrm to it too

sure the watercooling will make them run cooler but it's not like the power stages care much if they are at 80C or 30C.

"why not put VRM on water too" ... maybe because its useless and maybe because it cost a crapton of money to have that block on the VRM that is doing NOTHING there ... well aside of increasing the volume of coolant you need, introducing more points of failure for leakage and increase pressure drop of your loop ... if i decide to go with x570 i will be expecting EKWB to make chipset block for most higher end boards THEN that might actually be something to invest the money in to get rid of that annoying fan, but for VRM overspecced like this its IDIOTIC to waste money and effort watercooling it ...

How much water block cost to ASUS when its most likely designed and maybe manufactured by EKWB for free or close for whom its massive marketing opportunity? Price is very close to Gigabyte top mobo which dont have water block. Water block or not, their top model wouldnt be cheaper than Gigabytes anyway because it would immediately make people think its not as "premium" than Gigabyte. Its personal choice at enthusiast building level to have water cooling system, air cooled, loud, quiet, or run shit military style passive 90c.

@@gizmoriderfulye8007 you are joking right ? for free ? waterblocks are low volume product made one at a time by cnc machining ... they are EXPENSIVE AS HELL ... Its not some cast shit made by thousands in some chinese factory ... its takes time, manpower and seriously expensive machinery (unless you want it made on manual machines which brings the increase in cost in manually done labor ...) ffs you can clearly see the price of that block in the board prices ... ROg Hero VIII comes at $360 while the Formula is at $700 ... the ONLY difference between those boards is that waterblock meaning it will cost you $360 ... which is about the price one would expect for custom waterblock sold through two margin increases as EK wants its cut and ASUS marks the product up also ... you obviously do not know anything about watercooling so let me put it in terms you will understand. ordinary waterblock for the GPU, which is simple single chamber block of copper machined into shape with plastic cover, will cost you +-$160 ... the waterblock on the VRM has to be split into two parts which is much harder to machine so basically treat it as TWO blocks ... voila here you go your "basically for free" $340 Waterblock ... which does NOTHING a good passive heatsink couldnt do on VRM that will at best run at 20% of maximum theoretical capacity ... its waste of money ... hell you will be paying a cost of the whole motherboard extra for thing that is nothing but a "bling factor" and a bragging right but doesnt affect performance one iota ...

If Asus is pricing this the same as Aorus Master and MSI Ace, I would not be buying this one. No because of VRM, but on other QOL features alone. Actually hoping new Aorus UEFI turns out good and useful as you hinted at in another video

Hey, question about the unnecessary 4-pin power connector.. I'm not _exactly_ sure how the different power stages on this motherboard are mapped out, from the actual CPU to the 4-pin and 8-pin connectors, but I can only assume that without out the extra 4-pin connected, it's possible some some power stages might be underutilized, or not used at all. If that's the case, the whole vrm system would be better off with the extra 4-pin as it would generate slightly less heat, and distribute it across all vrm ic's.
