Agreed they are better. But we shouldn’t be aiming for minimal viable seating comfort. We should be encouraging people onto trains with comfy seats. Europe doesn’t seem to have this problem. Why does the UK always go for such hard seats on its new trains. The only exception to this is Lumos trains which despite having the same seat shape have much more padding and are much more comfortable. Why can’t everyone just copy Lumo?

If they get dispensation to run the 805s at 125 on the Trent Valley passengers will discover exactly why I spent the 1970s getting tilt systems to work, as their coffee slides sideways off the tables! It's about 'passenger comfort' and no amount of extra acceleration out of the curves will cancel out the lateral acceleration during the curves.

For those of us old enough to remember, I'm getting class 91 flashbacks here... Top speed of a new fleet that can't be used due to infrastructure limitations and probably never will be if history repeats itself. Nobody wants to build tilting trains at a sensible price any more to take advantage of TASS on WCML so here we are. Compromised again.
@audigex
@audigex 6 ай бұрын
Never mind the Class 91... the Pendolinos these will be running alongside also can't run at full speed. They're limited to 125mph despite being capable of 140mph These will mostly be operating south of Crewe anyway so they don't actually lose *that* much time vs a Pendolino. Most of the really twisty stuff is further north
@josephharrison8354
@josephharrison8354 6 ай бұрын
The problem isn't really signalling: that'll help with cramming more capacity onto existing lines, because more precise signalling means trains can run closer together. It is fundamentally the issue of the WCML being a multi-speed, multimodal line, and the capacity constraints that causes. Bumping intercity services up to 140mph will just exacerbate that issue.
@rajveerhonrao
@rajveerhonrao 6 ай бұрын
Even worse when HS2 trains can't go at 125mph on the line up to Scotland due to their lack of tilt whereas the older Pendolinos can.
@alcatel4539
@alcatel4539 6 ай бұрын
The reason these trains can't exceed 125mph is signalling related. The regulators don't think it is safe to depend on lights on sticks.
@TheRip72
@TheRip72 6 ай бұрын
@@alcatel4539 That is a good reason for not upgrading the signalling. As mentioned elsewhere, the WCML copes with a mix of freight, local, semi-fast & long distance passenger services. The slow lines (where they exist) cannot cope with everything except the long-distance, so while it would be possible to upgrade the signalling & trains to run faster, they would not do it for very long before catching up a slower train & having to run at a reduced speed as a result. Upgrades would therefore give very limited benefits. The trains in the video were ordered before the Crewe section of HS2 was cancelled. They would have integrated much better with other services had that opened as previously planned.

So I recently went on the 805 to London and boy was it a nightmare, the train I was meant to get had been cancelled at Crewe after coming fresh out of the depot, and by the time I made it to Chester from Runcorn East, I had no time to make a connecting service down to Crewe, luckily though a 58 minute late 805 was nearly at Chester and would give me about 15 minutes connection time, or so I thought, the train ended up getting to the station 67 minutes late and had to join another 805 whilst sat at the platform, this made the train so late I missed the connection at Crewe and had to end up getting a pendolino down to the capital, to say the least u was not happy On the otherhand after a lovely day in London I timed it just right to get an 805 back to Chester, this only being 10 minutes late on Arriva at Chester due to speed restrictions on the 805’s I give the whole experience an 8/10, would’ve been 10/10 if they were able to reach full line speed, and the morning run I’d give a 2/10 due to how late the trains were

Ok, let me get this straight. Pendos and Super Voyagers tilt to allow 125mph running on the WCML, however these new trains cant tilt and therefore will be limited to 110mph on a lot of sections...unless the WCML has had some sort of massive stealth upgrade in the last few years that I have missed.

It was cheaper for Avanti order non tilt trains, plus any Tilt order trains would taken far longer to build as no production line platform anymore for tilting pendolinos have redesign new fleet. Where as Hitachi fleet are tried n tested later generations of IEP only downside can't run at 125mph everywhere no tilt. Hitachi fleet production line still rolling so far easier to add new trains to the current build than start from scratch something totally new

@@rthoc71 Don't get me wrong the Voyagers needed to be replaced, and god it was terrible when they ran to Glasgow completely under the wires. Just worry about the impact on not just journey times, but pathing, no doubt these will spend the vast majority of their time on the fast lines, potentially holding up Pendos if they start to fall behind the WTT.

@@MylesHSG having ridden few times on tilt voyagers they weren't best thing switching between tilt mode to non tilt little uncomfortable at times, tilt system on pendolinos more smoother transitions. Acceleration is quick on 807 bit similar to issues we had on ECML when Mk4 91 full fleet ran main service Edinburgh to London at time hired 2 class 90's run with mk4 used on Leeds runs with 110mph it worked but only because 90 was superior in acceleration than 91 at the time. So getting back to WCML if 110mph Avanti Evro good accelerating only way work is restrict where they operate ie not North of Lancaster, where track speeds greater on straights be not lot diffence when hits tilting sections where anything slower will impact 390 schedules

This is a route I have travelled a few times. The ride on the 221s was quite rough and, of course, there was the intrusive noise/vibration of the diesel engine. The food was pretty poor on your journey - I seem to recall receiving a hot meal on the up journey and probably a hot meal on the down journey, also, the first class lounge is pretty decent at Euston. You did not say what the £84 fare covered. Even if it was a single, £84 is quite reasonable. Car fuel alone from Chester to London would be £60 to £80 for a return trip and that is before taking into account parking and congestion charges. Also, my senior railcard gives me 30% off every train train fare. City centre to city centre - what's not to like? Great video.

I think this is where British railways always let themselves down. It is well known that due to the design of the West Coast a tilting train is an asset and yet we bring in these new Hitachi trains which don’t have this feature. To allow those trains to run at the same same speed as a Pendolino more track work is necessary to straighten the curves et cetera. Further cost. Surely this should’ve been thought about when they ordered these Hitachi trains. We seem to have been Bamboozled into getting Hitachi and nothing else when there are other trains out there that would’ve done the job just as well. Even updated Pendolinos, with a tilting mechanism would’ve been great.

Excellent appraisal of yet another Hitachi AT300 variant 🙂👍🏽 The GWR ones on my region are truly awful and after nearly 7 years in service for the GWR 800/0’s, most of the interiors are now looking worn with badly rattling plastic panelling, stained carpets and some seat bases (even in 1st class) sunk so far, you can feel the metal bar underneath 🫣 The one good thing about these 805’s is that they were not DFT specified like GWR/LNER, so there is better seating, better lighting and they seem to be fitted out better inside 🤔 Lets see what they are like after a few years in service and lets hope they are not in a sorry state, like most of the GWR AT300’s 🫣

To get a reduction in ticket prices, what part(s) of the whole system would you reduce? Wages (whose?), safety (yours?), frequency (more or fewer trains?). Come on, be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
@TheRip72

@@josephinebennington7247 It depends which ticket prices. The structure is very weird. On longer journeys, advance tickets can be pretty cheap. Standard fares are often huge & ridiculous. A few years back, I did a 1 hour journey on a Virgin service & the cheapest option was a first class ticket. Standard class was not sold out, it was simply more expensive. How crazy was that?

@@josephinebennington7247 there were about 270 empty seats on this train, if they cut that 1st class ticket from £84 to 48 and all that you'd need is 3 people (which let's be honest at that price it would more likely be at least half full) to make more money than they are now. This is such a basic concept which seems lost on the modern world. They could have charged £10 a seat which would garentueed be a full train and made more money than they did on this journey with these ridiculous prices.

Quite a good looking train! Strictly speaking, this would be a MST (medium speed train), capable of attaining max operational speed of 250 km/h . HSTs (high speed trains) are capable of attaining max operational speeds of 350 km/h (China's Fuxing, France's TGV, etc.) .

I belive there is NO plan for these to do 125MPH. No amount of upgrading the track would allow such speeds. The west coast already has canted corners to help with speeds. These units have higher acceleration which is enough to make up for the speed difference
@andrewreynolds4949
@andrewreynolds4949 6 ай бұрын
There will be limited amounts of 125mph authorized in the near future as part of the new line speed profile, but there will be considerable amounts of 115 and 120 mph.

I wonder what the time difference between these and voyagers are, as the 805s have far better acceleration than the voyagers iirc, which should make up for the 110MPH speeds on the WCML instead of the 125 seen on Voyagers

For Liverpool diagrams they will take 10 mins longer. But perhaps on some avanti routes with many intermediate stops, their acceleration might mean diagram times stay the same. Not sure though.

Great video pal 😁, Judging by what I've seen in your video, I'd say in one way they're a step forwards from the voyager and in another way they're a Step backwards, The lack of tilt and reduced power sockets are a Step Backwards, but everything else is a step forward. You'd think Hitachi of all companies would have built all their trains to tilt wouldn't you? Especially since the Japanese are well known for their cutting edge and reliable technology.

Refurbishment will not cure the bad ride quality, which is almost certainly smashing up the track at the same time. 26 metre vehicles with 17 metre bogie centres and 80 cm wheels is asking for trouble, as is the 1 metre gap between vehicles. A visit to Sims of Newport would be needed to fix these trains.

Good interior layout in standard class - really like the well aligned 5 bays in the middle. Think Hitachi is being unfairly singled out for the bad IET interiors - it's down to customer specification (blame the DfT). Avanti seems to have done a good job with choosing seats and seating layouts.

With better seats the Class 800/801/802s could be perfectly decent trains. Sadly the convoluted contract arrangements for the 800/801s likely mean we are stuck with seats until the contract ends, which I bet results in them going straight to the scrapyard as I doubt GBR would be able to get a good deal on a buyout/leasing deal with Agility Trains.
