I remember watching John Wayne winning Best Actor for "True Grit," and saying something like, "If I had known, I would have put the eye patch on years ago." While that was a great role and movie, Ethan Edwards was by far his best portrayal of a complex character. Ethan is not necessarily even likeable, but he is fascinating, thanks to John Wayne and John Ford. Best western of all time!
@teastrainer3604
@teastrainer3604 5 күн бұрын
@@richj770 The Oscar for a True Grit was a "make-up call" by the referees who realized they had made a bad call earlier. And his performance in Red River was just as good as in The Searchers.
@jerryrpettus1926
@jerryrpettus1926 4 күн бұрын
@@teastrainer3604 Well, there's that, but there is also the fact that, IMO, Wayne was never the kind of actor who disappeared into a character like many of his younger colleagues, but was an actor who made every character a "John Wayne Character." The Oscars are nothing if not sentimental, and Wayne's fight against cancer was well known. I always felt (and that feeling was apparently echoed by many in Hollywood) that the Oscar nom and win was as much about honoring his life and history as an actor before he passed, as it was about his performance of this particular role.

I have the 2006 Blu-Ray and have watched it at least half a dozen times over the years. I watched the 4K Blu-Ray a couple nights ago. The 4K is better in every way. The audio is a bit lackluster but that is a limitation of 50's movie production. Don't get me wrong here, the audio is clean, voices are clear. Any one who says this is not a clear upgrade over the 2006 Blu-Ray should be ignored as a reviewer.

I’m with you all the way on Liberty Valance. I just streamed it again recently. There’s so much there and it really does reward repeated viewings. Like a lot of John Ford’s films - the details are precious. If John Wayne would have been nominated, would that have been for Supporting Actor or one of those rare films where 2 men are nominated for Best Actor? And then Lee Marvin for Supporting? A great film not appreciated much in its time. I think this is where Ford presents the civilizing of the West with Wayne/Marvin as the old and Stewart as the new.

I noticed certain movies don't work well in 4k. For example I'm not a fan of Kubrick's 2001 in 4K as it exposes the practical effects, spaceship models and background panels (I'm not a native English speaker, so I'm not sure this is the proper term). So the higher the resolution and the more detailed the shots, the more dated the movie looks. I think full HD might be enough for certain movies. That being said a movie like Lawrence of Arabia for example certainly benefits from 4K. As for westerns, the Anthony Mann and James Stewart western collaborations would really benefit from 4k as the lanscapes look gorgeous. One of my favorite bluray releases of all time, even if not perfect, is a Taiwanese adventure movie called A Touch of Zen. I would love that to be released in 4k (if it's not already released). I think it was restored and scanned in 4k, so it will certainly be upgraded in the near future. I would also love to see some of the movies from Visconti and Antonioni in 4k as well as Tarkovski of course. They would look gorgeous if done properly. I own a bluray release of the Searchers and it looks great. In 4k it might look even better.

The fist viewing you’ll walk away with “What did I just see?” The movie will open up, expand, deepen on repeated viewings. “Masterpiece” is a word overused and thrown around. This movie hands down is one. I’ve seen this movie many times, never in 4k.

This is one to buy for the 4K image alone. It's a HUGE shame and almost offensively unfair that what is arguably the definitive western shouldn't get a few new extras for what I suppose is its 70th anniversary release. I mean, the extras are all good, but we needed more this time. Still, it's a must have release. And next year we'll get a 4K of Once Upon a Time in the West, which I suspect will be a similar situation to this one: fantastic 4K with old extras, but still a must buy.

It's a bit inbetween the lines, but the reason Why Ethan is dismissive and rude to Martin is because he's a constant reminder of the gruesome fate of his parents at the hands of the comanches - which hints at a much more close relationship Ethan had with the indians when younger, going away to fight in the War as a way to forget/avoid his tragic falling out, and finding great use in his experience dealing with them to find Debbie. This is why it's also important near the end of the film when Scar shows him his collection of scalps, to show they've crossed paths in the past, to let Ethan know that he was the one who raped and murdered Martin's mother and kept her scalp. It's a bit more complicated than to just say "oh Ethan's just racist" because that's not the case at all. The Searchers is one of the few movies I'd say that are truly timeless, like how every single person on earth should read Lord of the Rings and War and Peace at least once, they should watch The Searchers. I've been looking at screenshots for this new 4K version and it's just an absolute feast to the eyes. Thanks for the screencaps!

Ireland is green! Also, this was a passion project for John Ford who ‘had’ to make Rio Grande before the studio would green-lite The Quiet Man. Definitely worth another viewing if not for the great dialogue!

Speaking just for me, I want the best reproduction of the best version of the movie that existed “back in the day.” If the day for night sequences didn’t look so great back then, I don’t want people coming along now and fixing them. But otherwise, it sounds great.

A deeply fascinating picture, of all the canonized “Great American films” I definitely find this to be among the strangest ever made. It’s crazy such a big, weird movie with such an ugly side got made back then lol. From the beautiful sweeping first shot in which we see Monument valley in all its glory and splendor it almost feels like we might as well be on another planet, and as the story progresses through the changes of the season the setting fittingly begins to feel like an endless purgatory. *SPOILERS* A common complaint is that while the main storyline of Ethan hunting for the Comanches who took Debbie captive and killed her family is very dark and unsettling, the “B” story involving Ethan’s part Cherokee nephew Martin and his courtship with Laurie and her family plays like typical Fordian comic melodrama, but I find those awkward tonal shifts somehow work perfectly to convey the central conflict between ex-confederate soldier Ethan’s violent side and the familial side of his American culture he can never really be a part of. It’s also strange to consider how critics often decry the film’s racist portrayal of the Comanches as savages, yet they ignore or overlook that the white characters aren’t really represented any better lol. Almost all of them, even those in authority, are complete fools while Wayne’s character Ethan is a despicable racist whose hatred goes beyond the grave. Along similar lines it’s wild how Ethan’s racism manages to spread to other characters, when it becomes clear late in the film that he is searching for Debbie not to rescue her but to kill her for being taken as the wife of a Comanche and even Laurie tells Martin that Debbie would be happier dead, sheesh. Such an unflinching portrayal of American racism at a time before it was “fashionable” for Hollywood to address racism. There are so many powerful scenes. The moment Ethan’s family realizes their home is being staked out by the Comanches amongst the orange light of dusk and the zoom in on Lucy’s face before she lets out a shriek is right out of a horror movie, as is the visual of Scar’s shadow appearing over a young Debbie as she cowers under her family’s gravestone. The moment when Ethan finally does find her at the end and is uncertain about what to do before embracing her and saying “let’s go home” is deeply moving, as is the final shot of Ethan standing alone in the doorway. He’s like Ahab if he had finally caught the great whale and he has nothing else to live for and no real “home” to return to. As Martin Scorsese said, like the Comanche whose eyes he shot out he’s left to walk between the winds in purgatory. I knew this had the potential to be an all time great 4k on the level of 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia and I’m so glad it is

The Duke is great as a hero, yet some of his greatest roles were not so much a hero.. Searchers, and Red River ..among the best. But huge fan of Big Jake, and the Cowboys. ❤

I guess your over exuberance is due to the fact you never saw the blu ray release which I have and when viewed upscaled on my 4k player looks excellent. This movie has always looked good; the only problem is the sound which is mono but if as you say this 4k release only improved it to a split stereo then for me at least I don't think it's worth the "upgrade" and for 30 bucks. For now I'll stick with my well upscaled blu ray until a really compelling reason to upgrade such as much better sound quality options are available. For me while this is a great Western my favourites are still High Noon, Shane, Unforgiven, Stagecoach, and The Outlaw Josey Wales and if you really think about it Seven Samurai which really at heart is a Western.

Having grown up among Westerns dominating television and constantly in theaters, this time with its lack of and poor attempts at the genre makes me feel like I’m crossing a desert devoid of waterholes.

Warner Archive always does amazing work but the credit should go the restoration houses like UCLA and the television film archive. Warner Archive handles the quality control and it 100% bc they know the importance of getting these physical releases correct. If you want to be wowed by another Warner Archive release check out The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grim.

On your second viewing, look for the relationship between Ethan and his brother’s wife and keep that thread in the back of your mind as you watch the rest of the movie. The sprawling aspect is just on the surface, it is much more an intimate depiction of community in the brutal Texas plains.

However pointless "Best film" lists are, in my opinion, we're talking about one of the 10 best films ever, never mind westerns. I keep feeling the same endless awe and finding new things after about 30-40 viewings since I discovered it 40-odd years ago as a kid.
