Just a clarification before others try crucifying me - I confused myself with the Technicolor when I took my notes apparently. There wasn’t a three strip negative and Technicolor in fact did the colour dye processing using the VistaVision single negative as a source. All I know is that the restoration team faced some problem with the blues in the film and had to use another source but they say it looks amazing. So before you leave a nasty comment, I’m sorry! Only human 😅

Good thing I saw this right after I watched that explanation, because I know three-strip Technicolor does NOT have fading issues as the three strips themselves are B&W. Fading is a symptom of Eastmancolor film, which was new in 1956; early OCNs & prints tend to have the worst fading. I'm not that interested in The Searchers itself (perhaps I should be?), but I'm interested in this to support WAC moving into 4K -- especially for Around the World in 80 Days, also a 1956 large-format film (Todd-AO) with known Eastmancolor fading issues that George Feltenstein says is being worked on at WB though reportedly it's on the back burner behind Gone with the Wind, also a Best Picture winner but easier to restore & still more valuable despite its PC issues.

Can't wait for this. The Searchers is John Ford at his directorial best and John Wayne in one of his finest performances. It's a masterpiece of cinema, in my opinion. The other titles from the Warner Archive are all pretty good as well. This is a good wave of releases.

The bluray which was a very early bluray was one of the most beautiful blurays ever so this should look amazing. Warner Archive does great transfers and it was shot on Vista Vision, the best format ever. Any Vista Vision film that’s made it to 4K looks incredible.

Unfortunately I don't think they will as I can't think of any Warner Archive release getting a bluray here. It's currently going to set you back about $60 to preorder it from Amazon US. Probably will be cheaper in 6 months or so. Keep an eye on the website moviezyng as they occasionally have sales on Warner Archive like 4 for $44 (USD) and their international shipping isn't terrible.

I’m not typically a western fan, but the Warner Archive releases have looked so good I’m super intrigued to check out their first 4K release. Conflict is at the top of my list. I’ve been grabbing every Bogart release they’ve done.

In general, I can't say I'm a great admirer of Warner Bros' attitude towards physical media. They seem intent on getting rid of it altogether. But a release like The Searchers could go a long way towards rebuilding some good faith in the company. Especially if there's a nice collector's edition of it with lots of nice swag and reading material...

The old DVD of Three Little Words from the early 2000s on Turner/Warner/MGM looked perfectly fine to me with excellent color and I would have no reason to upgrade, especially for anyone who just wants to have it in their collection. You are correct, it's not so much a dancing musical as it could be, but more of a completely (likely) fabricated musical biopic of two popular songwriters, Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby who wrote many hits including ones for the Marx Brothers. I see it as mainly a holiday season movie that you can pull off the shelf maybe once every five years, and not much more really. It's above average.

Great news regarding 'The Searchers''; during 2024 I watched the movie as part of WSW2024 on the Pictureville screen in 4K digital and soon after in 70-mm at Karlsruhe ... a 4K will be a welcome addition to the home collection. Here's hoping the extras include 'The Turning of the Earth'.

This is great news, as the picture is one of my ten essential American pictures, and as I do not have a 4K player, rather an OPPO Blu-ray and Samsung plasma, that the Blu ray does is taken from the restoration! BTW, I have seen this picture twice at MoMA, a mint, archival print, once with Harry C JR. who talked about the picture. Stunningly gorgeous.

The Searchers looked great on Blu Ray so I'm sure it will be awesome on 4k.It's been a good period for classic westerns on 4k with Rio Bravo,Liberty Valance and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid all showing why westerns look so good on this format.The only downside is the high price and having to wait for a month to get a copy.

@tompoynton What is the source for news of the 2025 release of Barry Lyndon ? The best version we have at present is the 2017 Blu-ray (from a 4K scan) by Criterion; duplicated in the recent CC40 box. Clearly a 4K next year would make sense as it is the 50th anniversary.

I'm afraid you're "mixing your color metaphors". _The Searchers_ was shot in Eastman Color, specifically *Eastman 5248* Monopack Color Film. Technicolor was responsible for the lab work and the IB, Dye-Transfer prints. The fading of the 'blue layer' refers to the the blue layer contained within the 5248 negative - not uncommon for a 68-year old negative. Thank you for sharing the news about this 4K release.

@@ElliotCoen Yes, the name 'Technicolor' has MANY definitions: (3) different 2-Color Systems; (2) different 3-Color Systems (and technically a 3rd, if Technicolor Laboratories is contracted to print standard, Dye _Coupler_ prints). And I haven't even mentioned their line of film cartridges for training films from the 1960's & 70's, and even some [current-day] cable modems-! What many of us remember from the days when the slogan "Color by Technicolor" was used, is the stunning colors achieved thru the use of Dye Transfer (IB) prints - which originally required the use of their 3-Strip camera to capture the [full] color images, that later gave way to an Eastman Color negative, beginning with 5247, *around* 1951, that merely required a standard 35mm camera. And even if the source material(s) for current-day BD's & 4K's are lucky-enough to have the original camera negative, and/or B&W separations, that alone will not guarantee the 'color look' as seen in movie theatres projecting those famous IB prints during the original release. That 'look' must be carefully "re-created" in the digital domain [hopefully] with the assistance of the an original IB print (or two) - if it exists - to use as a color reference. Then it's up to today's colorists and film restorers to bring-back 'that look' - which I might add for many, many titles - has been greatly successful; as I suspect it will be for _The Searchers._

Did you ask them if uk release ? Absolutely no info online. Rather wait for uk release before paying extra for import. 4k will be region free but bluray disc will be region locked.

Don't need it. I have the HD DVD, one of the best quality films that I own; and I have many 4K releases which I watch on the Panasonic 9000/LG 65 OLED.

You're lucky if the HD DVD is fully playable as many of my Warner Bros discs, especially the Stanley Kubrick titles, have playback problems when I play my HD DVD discs.
