This period from the end of the 90s to the beginning of the 2000s was one of the most notable times in this regard, mysterious, industrial and electronic vibe. Games like Midnight Club 2, GTA 3, FEAR, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo, Max Payne, Deus EX... Films like: Fight Club, Matrix, Ghost In The Shell had this. This game's music perfectly represents this vibe, and complementing it even further, the trip hop music genre is what best fits this. I miss that mysterious vibe in entertainment in general in the late 90s and early 2000s...

Mauro Fiore was the lead designer of the game (who later got oscar for his cinematograpy work in Avatar) and Terry Donovan for the soundtracks (a founder member of rockstar games). Bless them they made a very unique experience.

This was it. Zooming into the dark atmosphere of this game by listening to this menu music. seeing the loading screen with the gas station and underneith the turning japanese signs and the MC2 logo - fcking scary for a 10 year old. Also some heartpounding techno songs were scary if you concern that this game had only a restriction for kids under twelve years. R* never achieved this Atmosphere again.

NFS Beast I sort of agree. Rarely can a racing game nowadays feel new and advanced, different from any others. MC2 will never be able to be replicated. It was a huge step ahead for any other racing games at the time, with the amazing gameplay and deep-in-detail character cutscenes. Forza Horizon 1 was a step ahead too, it broke away from the Motorsport games, since they were stuck on the racetrack after street racing started to die off. Open-world racing became more populated. Even though, Horizon 3 doesn't feel special now, because there were so many games that copied it, and so many sequels to the original Horizon. The thing is, nobody can duplicate the work Rockstar put into this artwork of a videogame. It is sort of sad, really. Anything game-related in general. We've found VR for gaming, but where can we go after this? Holograms? Things started with Pong, and now we have virtual reality. Where are racing games going to go? That's the thing- there is really nowhere else to go with this genre. The same type of racing game keeps on being created. Nothing new for a change comes. No new turn in the racing genre has happened in plenty of years. Some developer needs to take a step up, and make a change. Maybe even, that can be Rockstar with Midnight Club 5, which is a necessity for us Midnight Club fans.

When somone visits me, i like to turn on all my rgb room lights to blue and purple and let this music run in a loop. Then i leave to pick someone up at the trainstation, and when we come back, open the door to my appartment and enter, theres is such a cool atmosphere. I just love this tune as background music. So bone chilling, driving through the streets of LA, Paris, and Tokyo; all in a race to become the best, whilst cops are on your tail chasing you, the other racers are crashing through the city park and the chapel, or perhaps through a tunnel system, all while traffic is in a panic. Eventually, through a few more seconds of hard execution of racing, you find yourself at the finish line first, left only to watch the other racers fly from a hill down to you as a final charge for second place. Truly, this is the most intense street racing game ever made, with what must be the greatest atmosphere in a racing game ever. Few games can even come close to the insane pressure that is racing in the streets with other racers facing the harsh environment that is the busy streets of famous cities with traffic at an all time high.

@@AustinDallasPictures it still happens but it's quite rare now. Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the Mirror's Edge games really get their atmospheric angle nailed on. Some of the greatest soundtracks and most perfect vibes in games that I've felt. But then you get into the gameplay and all that, for the most part, takes a back seat. There's no creepy aura to games that much anymore. Driver 3 had it. Midnight Club had it. I think we're just too advanced now... or we've grown up and we think differently towards it now. With these older games you always had the feeling of something hidden underneath, a secret or something there. Midnight Club 2 gave you the feeling of a story not being told to you and this main menu theme captures that. The game is ghostly.

You see a mountain, you go and climb it and complete objectives on it. Back in the day on games of this era you felt way more satisfaction and satisfaction when you jumped on a building or unlocked a secret. Even Tony Hawk's and the secrets in that felt special. It probably lasted for me until halfway through the 360/PS3 era.

Well, it was released by Electronic Entertainment Expo 3. Composer was David Helpling if I recall. This music was a gift for this game developers.

I keep coming back to this video, as I now don’t own a copy of it nor a ps2. But damn the fucking memories this theme brings me, I would sometimes just stay at the menu screen to hear this piece! Back when I was kid around 7. gosh do I miss those moments. Now I see myself how I’m growing older.....
