Danse Macabre is just the early romantic version of spooky scary skeletons.

I sometimes have pictures in my head that move like this animation when I go to bed. They are not dreams exactly because I am still sort of awake when I have them, only when I'm completly relaxed yet alert is when I have a surreal vivid experence like this.

My boyfriend has a memory of seeing this animation alongside another very similar one for the same song in a contest, where his class were some of the people who voted on the winner. Don't suppose anyone knows the other video, if it's up anywhere? This was in Derry in Northern Ireland btw - thank you!!!

A Danse Macarbe is a device used to remind us all of the inevitability of death..as the end of this wonderful cartoon demonstrates! She thought it was all just a dream, but no, there was Death at the end just biding his time..fabulous music and brilliantly realised in this animation!! Five stars!

THANK YOU for uploading this. I have been looking for a well done animated interpretation of this piece forever. I've only ever seen one other, and it was stop motion and had a poem in it. As an animation student, this is the most inspirational thing I have seen in a while.

this was briliant! I love this musical piece so much. It's so beautiful. This video was amazing too. I remember first hearing this in 3rd grade. I remember mostly everyone being weirded out but I instantly fell in love with it. :D I remember we got a few worksheets with very poor quality grainy drawings of them of images portrayed in the song, and Death looks much different. I think there was a video too, but not this one. Death had a black shroud. Anyone know where I could find it?

I imagined it to be more like a skeleton feast with rowdy dancers and clarinets and stuff, not a violin solo, but it's still awesome nonetheless

Saw this back when studying at university in 1997. I used to order a DVD called 'Shorts' which would be a compilation of short filmmakers. I remember watching this transfixed, just as I still do today. So many creative choices all coming together in what is still to this day, a perfect artistic achievement. Bravo. It's as fresh today in 2020 as it was in 1996. So impressive and emotional. The lack of cuts means it pulls you towards it from the moment it starts. Exhausting, hypnotic, sensual and haunting. I love this piece of work.

Does anyone else think that it's kind of sad to have the realisation that whatever Death kisses must also die? I mean, I guess they could join him in the afterlife, but what if he loved someone so much that he just wanted them to live life and live it to the full, however it would be at the cost of his affection not being able to be displayed through touch.
