Fans have theorized that Riley is able to control himself after the change and not give into temptation because he was an alcoholic. He has struggled with and overcome his addiction so he has a level of control that allowed him not to give in to the bloodlust.
@frikadell3 ай бұрын
And that's also the reason he killed himself, because as an addict he knew he would probably eventually give in and kill someone.
@AmarthwenNarmacil3 ай бұрын
I think it's also because he's an atheist, He did not believe the Angel and Bible stuff and that it is a good thing. He saw it for what it was and knew he didn't want that for himself and all the people he loved. And because he was a recovering alcoholic, he had the knowledge how to stop himself.

this is my favorite episode of this show, and rewatching it always shatters my heart a bit more. what really gets me every time is riley realizing this "gift" he was forced into accepting is just a more lethal, worse version of his alcoholism. to be doomed to an eternity of not only craving something above all reason but knowing said thing can only be aquired through some form of violence after actively battling your addiction for years is incredibly cruel and i under his choice completely.
@cozydayzandnightz3 ай бұрын
Riley is a true MVP, not only for spilling the truth about Father Paul, but also for not hurting anyone while being a vampire. rip
@terran53643 ай бұрын
My friend is Catholic, so after this episode I asked him whether suicide was still sinful if you're a vampire. His response was straightforward: Martyrdom. A person who chooses to remain in the sun and perish may be thought of not as taking their own life but as being martyred by vampirism. "Technical term is martyrdom of charity. Caritas, altruistic love for one's neighbor. Someone is killed on account of loving mankind."

That's a cool thought. I personally always linked his painting style to the effects of Psilocybin, which I found a bit of a cheat code. But he used a lot of zinc- and lead white paints in his paintings which drove a lot of painters mad because of their high toxicity and because they are easily absorbed through the skin. This effectively made him suffer from 'painters madness' which leads to a lot of different illnesses including psychosis.

We follow Riley as the main character, ending with Erin taking up the mantle. On a side note, what happened to Riley on the boat is similar to Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC), a real phenomenon in which a person suddenly bursts into flames with intense heat, while their surroundings remain remarkably unaffected by the fire.
@15two4 ай бұрын
not to um actually but shc isnt really spontaneous combustion and pretty much all instances of it were found after the person was already dead. most cases also have a likely source of where the fire started too and its considered a pseudoscience

40:52 I agree, Midnight Mass is Flanagan's best work so far, and he's been writing it for such a long time now, he even teased it as a book in Gerald's Game. I think Midnight Mass is the most cohesive storytelling I've ever seen and the entire story is wrapped up neatly by the end of it.
@charlesallen53 ай бұрын
Technical stuff for people who know religious studies. Catholic priests can't celebrate Mass on Good Friday (or on Holy Saturday). They can't wear red on Good Friday; they wear black. And they don't wear a chasuble (the garment that looks like a poncho) on Good Friday, because you only wear that when you celebrate Mass. They can celebrate Mass after the sun goes down on Saturday because, technically, once the sun goes down it's Sunday according to the Jewish calendar.

I'm not crying, you're crying.😢 Cojo is absolutely right about Hamish Linklater, as all the comments I'm seeing agree. He is so good. He NEEDS to be in so much more stuff, it's actually criminal that he's not in as much as humanly possible. I mentioned in an earlier episode that I'd only seen him in a small but well-acted roll in the PHENOMENAL HBO show The Newsroom with the great Jeff Daniels. Never expected this level of performance from him, honestly, but we were truly blessed with him nonetheless. I'm so stoked at how much you guys are loving this show!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Being an addict his whole life and then taking someones life due to that gave him the wisdom that he couldn't change the hunger, the addiction, and that he would end up hurting someone else. His shame (which the preacher lacked) gave him the courage to change what he could.

This series does SUCH a good job highlighting the similarities between mainstream Christianity/Catholicism, which is so widely seen as the "good" and "normal" religion, and every other non-Christian belief system that is typically viewed (by the Bevs of the world, at least) as inhumane, savage, evil, devil-worship, etc... We're forced to look at the practices and scriptures through this lens, and it's horrific. It really goes to show that ANY religion is capable of being misconstrued, that ANY kind of faith leader is capable of manipulating a whole community to do monstrous things while believing it's right and just, that cults can form from ANYWHERE. And the show does this in such a way that is still so *respectful* of Christianity/Catholicism and still showcases the beauty of faith and all the positive potential it has alongside the negative. I feel like you could show this to the most strict, hard-wired Bible thumper and they would actually come out of it with a shift of perspective rather than just stubborn rejection up-front, because regardless of what you believe, the show is so genuinely thought-provoking.

1:22 When a person gets pregnant, the body's immune system is triggered and how it "attacks and cures" this illness is by going through pregnancy so uh, yeah that was a good train of thought Corey. No, it's explained in the show. A fetus is essentially a parasitic organism feeding off of the mother to develop. The body has to deliberately weaken its own immune system while pregnant so that the fetus isn't attacked, but the Vampire Blood is very, very aggressive in repairing the body. It overrides that response and destroys the child because it registers it as a foreign entity.
