Blake's Halloween reaction is still bad
@kirajohnson5382 ай бұрын
It just occurred to me how very cruel turning Riley was . He already killed one innocent person because of his addiction issues. And he was eaten alive by the guilt every second of the day. He worked so hard to try overcome it and get to a place where he could start over and maybe even have a future with the girl he’s always loved. And out of nowhere an even more insurmountable and dangerous addiction was thrust upon him without his consent. He must have felt so defeated.

An addiction to *specifically* hurting people.

The bible quote that riley left in the letter wasnt about resurrection, its about accepting your death. Hes basically telling monsignor that you cant escape death even though hes changed now.
@ginster4582 ай бұрын
its also what they all were blessed with in Ash Wednesday as a form of repentance before the glories of easter, the first time Riley participated in church again
@kenjinpiniteu2 ай бұрын
Yep. It's why Ash Wednesday is celebrated in Catholic doctrine - to remind people that death is a natural part of life, to not fear it. The body dies, but the Spirit lives on forever.
@Marina-cq2yt2 ай бұрын
Exactly! I think riley suspects that paul is doing these things selfishly and is reminding paul of his true faith and also that you can't escape death. Pauls reaction is telling, he knows riley is right.
@cullenarthur88792 ай бұрын
@@kenjinpiniteuI don't think Riley believed that. He explained that in his conversation with Erin about death. He explained how his brain and body would go through the death process, and what would happen to his consciousness while that happened. And then oblivion. Because like Riley, I see no reason to believe that a "spirit" or "soul" actually exists. We are our brains and bodies. And when those die, our consciousness dies. Everything that makes us us is our brains. I see no reason to believe anything supernatural such as a "soul" exists and could survive our death.

@marklouis18902 ай бұрын
As insane as it was for Riley to just combust in front of Erin, you have to admit it was a very selfless thing for Riley to do. He would rather take himself out than wreak havoc and kill missing people

Riley already killed one person through his addiction, he wasn’t willing to risk killing another.

Remember, Riley was an alcoholic. He knew his ability to resist human blood would have been slender and he didn’t want to harm *anyone* he was already haunted by the one death he caused. He could have done more if he didn’t have that burden.
@Mangolite2 ай бұрын
I’m thrilled that Riley didn’t stick around to be the savior because we’d end up with a Marvel superhero movie instead of a genuine horror show.
@lonetardigrade2 ай бұрын
Odd point of view. He could have easily been like the sheriff. These human characters were written in a grounded way all the way through, pretty sure that wouldn't change if Riley stuck around.
@chelscara2 ай бұрын
@@lonetardigrade I mean, I think they're saying less that the other characters would change, and more that the stakes change. When you give the humans a vampire, you're evening out the playing field against the other vampires. There's much more tension, real tension that's not about him fighting the urge for blood but the tension of these people actually surviving.

Igli is right. In a Catholic burial ceremony that is what the priest says ashes to ashes and dust to dust. Once the ceremony ends we grab a bit of dirt and throw it on the coffin as a symbol of that phrase. It says our life is not meant ro be permanent. Riley was reminding the Priest of that fact and how he has peversed it.

I dont think Riley telling Erin he loved her before he died was about confessing his feelings to her in a romantic sense, even though there was romantic love between them. It was moreso that he was at his most vulnerable point and in his last moments, all he wanted was to be with someone who he loved and trusted. Erin was that person for him, someone who was always in his heart, whether they were together or not. Whether they were in love or not. He specifically says he loved her "one way or another" so it was more than a confession, it was him being held and accepted to his dying breath.

The twist at the beginning of this episode that turns those scenes of Riley looking at his family in the last episode from "oh god is he considering turning them? Eating or killing them? Now that's he's a vampire" to "oh my god he went around delivering notes to each of the people he loved instead" is such a quiet little twist but it's really moving

@stormgold24332 ай бұрын
Flanagan is wrong, as odd as that is to say. They established how the poison works, they showed that Bev would use it, they show Paul dying in a way that fits with the poison, they show Bev being wary of him before his death and then supportive afterwards. Bev killed Paul. He came back, now she’s a true believer.

Mike Flanagan did his own take on the vampire myth in this story, so they don’t need permission to enter a house, they aren’t killed by stakes, nor do they fear crosses. The humans who become vampires don’t have fangs, so when they attack other people, it is much grosser.

You say it wasn't good that Riley told Erin that he loved her? What's bad about it if she felt the same. What if she loved him, he doesn't tell her and she asks herself every day after his death if he loved her? I think a person who has never really experienced love, saying they were loved is pretty good. Erin was not loved by her mother, was abandoned by the child's father and lost her baby. I think experiencing love at this moment is better than nothing. Btw. How do you get the idea that the vampire king would have spoken to the priest in any way? I didn't hear him say a word. This is because words were not necessary at all. All that was needed was a deed and a believing person. The vampire transformed the priest and the priest, a deeply religious person, believes it was God's work that sent an angel. Even a halo could be seen. Everything else has been taken care of by the Bible. There he has found all the answers he needed to have this miracle explained. Of course, misinterpreted, precisely because the vampire does not speak. The priest is not evil or bad. He is a good person who does wrong out of misguided conviction. He wants to do good for people. That's why Beth stands opposite him as a radical, so that you can see the difference.

I had watched a documentary on Jonestown several years ago and it traumatized me for several weeks after seeing it like I would start crying outta nowhere thinking about those poor people and kids. It was far worse then I had ever realized many joke about drinking the kool-aid but many of those people were surrounded by armed guards ready to shoot them if they didn't drink, a large portion were children who didn't understand what was happening and some people were held down injected with needles of syringes of the poison instead. There was a voice recording of them dying in agony while a madman Jim Jones told them it was gonna be okay then he had one of his gaurd shoot him because he couldn't pull the trigger himself nor could he drink the poison, coward. Like seriously I didn't know you could suffer ptsd from a documentary but it stuck with me for a long time. This episode is horrifying but the reality of places like Jonestown is far more gut wrenching and despondent inducing.

They sing _Großer Gott, wir loben dich,_ a very beautiful hymn from the 18th century. It's a paraphrase of the _Te Deum._ I think, in English, the lyrics go like this: Holy God, we praise Thy name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee! All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in Heaven above adore Thee; Infinite Thy vast domain, Everlasting is Thy reign etc. Bev poisoned Fr. Paul in order to hasten what she believed was the _Second Coming._ Apparently, _God,_ the _Angel,_ or Paul didn't work fast enough to suit her. She is rather impatient and take-charge in the series. She expected him to resurrect. Flanagan himself offers a different explanation, but it's actually not very convincing or consistent with the storyline. The boys should know any gun at this point is useless. If you kill an infected, you just make them a vampire, and a vampire can't be killed by a gun. 😉 Even one drop of the _Angel's_ blood would suffice to make you a vampire. All those who took communion and died would be vampires. Heaven's Gate was a UFO cult. They believed aliens were going to scoop them up or something for a ride in a comet-spaceship. In other to hasten the process, they committed mass suicide by sedating themselves and then putting plastic bags about their heads until they smothered. This was in California. In Jonestown, they _drank the kool-aid_ infused with cyanide. Jonestown was a messianic cult lead by Jim Jones, who had promised his followers a utopia in Guyana after proclaiming himself messiah of the Peoples Temple, interestingly another California-based cult. Rat poison, again! Who knew? Of course, the sheriff couldn't drink the poison, he'd be dead dead. Gosh, Mildred is a darn good shot! _For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many._

Yall are too focused on Bev being a villain. Nowhere in this story did they ever elude to her killing Paul. She was as shocked as the others when he died, and called it a divine blessing (or something) when he returned. What likely happened was Paul finally succumb to the vampire blood in his system, as he has had in his body the longest. Even if they didn't poison the church members they all would likely have died as the vampire blood became dominate in their bodies. I have watched this show over and over and while Bev did kill Joe's dog, she did not kill Father Paul that first time.

Thank you. Sometimes I feel like the only person who never thought Bev killed Paul. It's bewildering to me so many insist she did even after Flanagan has stated she didn't.
