I am not a religious person, but I love that in the end, the sherif and his son praying and the town singing shows how religion at its best gives us grace in life and death. Beverly’s faith was poisoned so her faith was untrue. She died screaming, trying to bury her head in the sand.

Erin's monologue at the end is about how our ego, our "self" is an illusion and that we are the universe experiencing itself. There's no definitive point where "you" or the universe begin or end because we are products of the mechanics of the universe. The personalities we develop are nothing more than fleeting stories we tell ourselves until we return to the universe.

The dialogue from father Paul: "No! I promised you complete honesty and I’m giving that to you, and I’m tired of you lying to me, Riley Flynn! I have forgiven it time and again, but today is critical for both of us and i am finished. Complete honesty. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL?! " This is such a deep line about how we tolerate people knowingly lying to us and the delivery from actor Hamish Linklater is just superb.

Midnight Mass was a passion project for Mike Flanagan for over ten years. He featured it as a book written by Kate Seigel’s character in Hush and appeared as a novel in Gerald’s Game. Midnight Mass is not a critique of faith and religion but about fanaticism, and the main vampire’s fate, in the end, is left to open interpretation as fanaticism never truly dies. No, Jesus was not a vampire. Vampism is an invert of the Christian faith. Finally, Midnight Mass has some of the best monologues from Flanagan.

Midnight Mass, The Haunting Of Hill House, and The Haunting Of Bly Manor are just fantastic series. Mike Flanagan is one the best horror directors and creators I’ve seen. The fact that he consistently creates shows that are this good is insane. I’m always genuinely excited to watch anything he’s apart of. I’d recommend giving Doctor Sleep a watch. It’s a sequel to The Shining that Flanagan wrote and directed. It’s is one my personal favorite horror movies. I think y’all might enjoy it as well.

About Pruitt realizing he was wrong: he knew all along. He knew what the vampire was, but tried to convince himself it was an angel to justify his actions. He said the only reason he brought it to the island was because he couldn't bear to see Mildred die, and he wanted to have a chance at a new start with her (remember, her husband is now dead, and that husband was the reason she didn't go with Pruitt at first because he was already traumatized by the war). That's the main reason, which is admittedly pretty selfish. Now, he could have just left it at that, right? So why didn't he? The second reason he brought the vampire back was because he truly loved his community and wanted to help after seeing them suffer from years as a result of the oil spill. That's why he encouraged everyone to come to mass regularly, so they could all become healthy and happier. It was a good intention but not well thought out. In his plan, it wasn't supposed to get this bad however. Bev Keane is really the one who messed it all up. Pruitt's plan was to bring all the people in the church back to life, then keep them inside for the night and give them some blood from the vampire to keep them from attacking the rest of the island, while he explained the situation and told them what to do (avoid sunlight etc) and what not to do (kill people). What wasn't in his plan, was that he'd be incapacitated by the bullet. Remember that Bev is the one who said to close the church door while everyone was going crazy, and she's the one who told Sturge to open them afterwards, when she knew Pruitt had told her not to. This is confirmed when you see Pruitt panic a bit when she orders Sturge to open the doors, like he's trying to protest. Bev is in this show to represent the so-called "Christians" who preach a lot and shame others but never actually do what they preach and use random scriptures to force others to do as they please or justify their wrongdoings. She's a selfish coward. She encourages everyone to drink the rat poison, but she doesn't drink it herself and hides at the back of the church. This show has pretty much th entire spectrum of religious/non religious people. The true Christians like Riley's mom, the fake Christians like Bev, the ex-believers like Riley, the atheists like those who stayed home, and those of other religions like the Sheriff and his son. In Pruitt's mind, this whole ordeal was suposed to go down as a civilized, organized thing without any attack. Actually, the people who have been transformed have the power to restrain themselves from drinking blood for a little while. Riley restrained himself, as did his parents and Ali, because they were moral people. The rest just thought "well I've been chosen by God so I can do whatever I want". That's why Pruitt tells Bev "we're the wolves in sheep clothing", because he realized not everyone has the strength to restrain themselves and that Bev literally sent them off to kill everyone else. In Pruitt's plan, no one was to die, he wanted to save everyone. Bev was just on a power trip the whole time and messed things up. I suspect also that she liked Pruitt (she says she knew he'd be her last trial or something like that) but turned against him when he said she was wrong (not stroking her ego) and was even more bitter when she realized that he liked Mildred, and that's why she called her a whore. This wasn't a good plan on Pruitt's hand, but it wouldn't have been as destructive and bloody if Bev hadn't been there.
@liamnehren1054
@liamnehren1054 Жыл бұрын
After watching the first episode a lot of what you commented on how so many of them were not true believers or followers of what they preached is what I commented, late to the party since I just watched it now but happy to see others notice that so much of the town was a toxic mess and it was pretty obvious from the start that Bev had been figuratively poisoning the town long before the oil spill which was shown with how a few people reacted to Riley. The true Christian thing would be to welcome him home and whole heartedly give him a second chance like how ironically the Pruitt did. Even his moral father fell into that trap probably out of association with bev over a long period of time, her type of evil is insidious to say the least. Pruitt also failed to notice that he lost control long before becoming sick and then a vampire. She was manipulating things probably for decades. Just look at that scene with Joe dead, the Christian thing to do then for the mayor would have been to arrest them both as murderer and accomplice but she had everyone completely downtrodden and indoctrinated into believing anything she said and doing as they were told.

A great story about how religion can cause otherwise moral, “good” people to believe insane things. Any rational person (like Riley) who would see what’s happening with the creature/blood would immediately know this situation is bad, but Paul/Pruitt was interpreting everything thru the lens of his religion. Telling himself it’s his “purpose” to save the island and that the effects of the blood were fulfilling biblical scripture. And on the other hand the story shows that religion/faith can bring comfort in the most dire times. Even if there’s no rational reason to believe any of it is true. At the end of the day the people of Crocket Island’s faith allowed them to die and accept their fate and not be afraid. Accept Bev, who was the one who pretended like she was more moral then all of them. A great example of how the most religious people can also sometimes be the most judgmental and immoral. If you’re convinced you have the power of God on your side, there’s no wicked act you can’t justify.

I’ve been rewatching this show (and other Flanagan works) a lot recently and they’re just the best. These are some of my favorite shows of all time and I’m glad to see them getting so much attention lately. Also interesting how there’s this theme that is somewhat present in all of his shows (except The Midnight Club as far as I can remember). It was said best in Hill House (still my personal favorite of his shows) when Nell said “I loved you completely, and you loved me the same. The rest is just confetti.” It’s one of my favorite lines and Erin says something similar here in the final episode, as well as someone in Bly Manor saying something along the lines of “Let him know that I’m sorry, and I loved him. The rest, well the rest is just…” (I know they’ve seen Bly Manor already but I’m still not gonna spoil any specifics). It’s got me thinking about getting some type of tattoo around the idea.

The line that resonated with me the most was Riley saying he "tried his best". A flawed man who is trapped by his horrendous mistakes and guilt. He never made an excuse, from the very beginning. of the show after the crash he was haunted by the woman he inadvertently victimized. He was repentant punished, ruined, shunned, and still haunted, and when faced with an easy out,, a chance to absolve himself and do the easy thing... he chose to sacrifice and give Erin whatever tools he could to save herself.

I keep on catching your mega edits of the Flanagan series, and this was wonderful! I was given a Roman Catholic upbringing up to grade 6, and I lost my faith at a very young age because my teachers weren't showing me the grace and compassion that they were teaching that Jesus taught. I've been in a church only a handful of times for weddings, funerals, and to remember those who have passed who followed the Christian (in general) faith. I have no want to return to it, but this did make me realize that Faith, no matter what faith it is, can be used as a tool for good, for evil, or something in between. I would say I'm agnostic at best, with a hefty dab of Paganism at this point. What I like about Midnight Mass is that there's that swatch of people, from Athiests to Believers to Those Who Believe in Something Else. MM doesn't wave the finger at believers, but rather what fanaticism does to someone's mind, and how people can twist and decay in that mindset. The horror of faith is always when people go too far, and this is an excellent peek behind the veil, and what constitutes as "fanaticism'.

Riley had an X-Files poster with Dana Scully on the wall in his bedroom, and his mother was played by Kristin Lehman, who was in an episode of X-Files. To my understanding, The Haunting of Hill house is loosely/thematically based on Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name. Bly manor was based on the works of Henry James, especially The Turn of the Screw and The Romance of Certain Old Clothes. There is a new one now, The Fall of the House of Usher, based on Edgar Alan Poe's work. It's quite good, though I haven't finished it yet. Quite NSFW compared to the other two seasons, if you ask me. Midnight Mass I'm not sure about. It has themes from lots of horror stories but I don't know if it's adapted from any particular work or author. I love that you guys make your predictions as you go through. I hope you do one for House of Usher as well!

10:52 - They speak about the settlement that the oil company paid them for the spill. While many would say the architecture is “New England Style”, it has way more of a relaxed southern feel. Even the homes would be odd in the Northeast unless they were in Canada. The power lines would not handle snow. I know they shot the entire series on an island in BC. There is a Crockett Cove in ME, no island though. The odd issue is the type of crab the father catches, they are all West Coast/Gulf Coast crab. I genuinely think they wanted as many people as possible to associate it with their coastal state, extremely intelligent move by Mike Flanagan.

It was fitting that Bev was always the greater evil, and the "angel" was hardly more than an animal only trying to feed. He or it had no dialogue not even with his disciple, and no depth or personality and that was brilliant. Bev was selfish, hypocritical and entirely malicious before and after the revelation of the false miracles. Spectacular storytelling!

This is so well done, the actors that are connected to any Mike Flanagan projects are trusted thespian heroes, and the writing is always on-point. This one feels to me like an adaptation to a Stephen King novel that he never wrote. Bev Keene's character is on the Joffrey and Ramsay level of hatred, all while feigning politeness and community. What a performance from the actor who plays her. And Father Paul, who I only know from The Newsroom series and The Big Short movie, did an exceptional job as well. Hot take is, this series was better than Hill House.

As someone who isn't religious, but not an atheist this show was quite thought provoking as I continue to ponder life and death as I age, A lot of interesting thoughts especially if you watch it more than once,. Riley had a full science approach. Erin had a fully religious approach. In the end Erin actually combined both of their sides into one in a way. Great thing about Flanagan is he never tries to convince you of anything, he merely provokes thought and discussion.

Love how you had it all figured out so early! I figured a lot out by episode 3 I think, but was actually taken by surprise by the vampire. I don't know why, but it never came to mind. I mean obviously I knew there was a monster, but when he said it was an angel I still kinda believed it because I thought this was a way of saying "look all religious things aren't good and some are outright dangerous". Also can't believe you knew he was her dad by episode 2! I remember figuring out that Sarah's mom and him were lovers when he called her young lady and covered her up, but didn't realize Sarah was his daughter until much later in the series. I binge watched it alone in one sitting then watched it again with a friend. I highly recommend watching it again, you can enjoy all of the small details, the specific words, the looks, etc that seemed insignificant at first but then drive the whole plot.

Replying after ep 3: Bev was just a massive asshole, but Flanagan said she didn't kill Pruitt and that he died due to overconsumption of vampire blood. Which... Makes sense. Too much blood killed off all of his human blood until he died and transformed. The people in the community are drinking diluted vampire blood. I think Flanagan did the whole rat poisoning thing with Bev as a misdirect. And also to show that vampire blood, despite the benefits of the thing, is poison and, as a foreshadow, would eventually be the town's downfall. Bev is a religious zealot who likes power, which is why she was so willing to believe in the miracle of Paul's resurrection, despite him basically turning into a clear vampire.

But I think a more nuanced explanation is three athiests recount one persons deep history with religion, and also provide some other perspectives on spirituality and faith that this one man has found after his departure form the church.

The Koran does recognize Jesus and Mother Mary. Jesus was a prophet like Muhammad, (May Peace Be With Him). But all major religious believe in ten commandments in their religion by another name.🙏

😳 Mrs. Movies doesn't seem to be a genuine first time watcher. Nobody else, absolutely nobody could've have foreseen all the major plot points without reading up on it beforehand. Mike Flanagan's stories aren't conventional or formulaic so there's no way to call it out in the precise manner that Mrs. Movies has been doing.

I didn't call it out like she did because that's insane 😂 I'm not that good at picking up on things but I definitely figured out Father Paul by the end of the first episode and that something was up with communion when Annie's vision was no longer blurry in ep.2

@@Peeplii : 😅👍 Well that's amazing many of you figured it out from Episode 1! How the heck did you immediately go to, yep, vampire, old lovers, secret love child right off the bat 🦇? I was clueless until at least ep. 3!

@pohanahawaii4119 oh yeah no Paul and the communion was the only thing I got early on😬😂 Idk what exactly made me think Paul =, Pruitt but he seemed way too familiar with everyone there and knew too much right off the bat. I barely even clued into the Leeza thing until Paul walked up the steps when offering her the wafer and I was like "oh crap she's going to get up". Some moments I can really clue in, other moments idk wtf is happening 😂

@@Peeplii : 😂 Haha, you and Mrs Movies are like a clairvoyants to impossible plot points. I was incredulous when she figured out it wasn't Lecter on the stretcher in one scene in Silence of the Lambs too and how he exactly did it. I mean, how? What kinds of brain vitamins are you guys taking anyway?

Do enough research into the text itself and the historical context of how it evolved and it’s not hard to see just how much of religion is made up man made stuff
