The actor who played the priest killed it in this. Just tows that line between between charismatic, and smarmy perfectly. Also the burgeoning crisis of faith and the doing evil unwittingly...interesting stuff. And Bev is just the banality of evil personified. Personally I probably liked Hill House better...but this one hit hard on a different level. In a way that's hard to explain. Thanks for doing this show.

The exploration of faith, life and death and addiction here is flanagan's most personal, incredibly different to, yet still holding on to the poignant dramatic monologues and the use of horror as a tool to flesh out characters which make the haunting series so perfect. mike's major stephen king influence really screams in this as he shows us once again the scope of horror as a genre. placing characters in these situations and in the setting of fear as a storyteller brings out truths to them that no other facet of human emotion could reveal which is just absolutely gorgeous and traumatising and cathartic to consume as the audience. no hidden ghosts hear just a primal horror. religion is freaking scary:)) beverly keane is probably the most terrifying villain in forever and we all probably have one of her in our circles. would love for you take a look at more flanagan and horror that clicks into this side, loving these reactions!!

Answering the question 'passing and the doors open', HELL NO! I live in Brazil, I grew up with urban legends of cars pulling up and taking you in, I of course wouldn't go investing sounds or doors opening in a creep house in the middle of the night!! When I walk somewhere late at night, I practically spree! If I hear a sound, walk faster, look behind, and if you see something, like a shadow, run! Scarier than something lurking in the dark is 2 persons on a motorcycle coming in your direction.

I think this show is one of the best explained. It’s not about hiding big reveals from you, it’s more about having those ingredients simmer to create a banquet. You know what the ingredients are, but that’s okay because you just get to enjoy the meal, rather than having strange flavors jump out at you that you weren’t expecting. The writing, camera work, and acting take center stage, and it’s much like you all noted where the supernatural material is primarily happening in the background. Not one thing overshadows another, it really does feel like Flanagan’s best work.

In my opinion this is the best Flanagan show so far even though it is not scary in the way that the other two are. It is much different type of horror but I think that it makes you think even more than the others. Your reactions and discussions after the fact are always a blast the way that you guys delve into the meaning and importance of what the story writers are trying to say is always nice to follow along with and see how your opinions and interpretations differ from my own. First thing came to my mind when i started watching this show is (Aswang). A popular Asian/Filipino folklore that every Filipino has heard from their parents and a lot of villagers believe to be true. A Shape shifting human/vampire that turns into a demon with wings at Midnight and sucks blood out of its victims. It dies in the sun and does not like garlic or salt. The events pretty much seem like the folk Filipino stories, So this show basically was an ASWANG themed to me.

I love a TV series that feels like an adaptation from a play, especially if it has something to say. Oh I'm SO excited y'all are watching this! I found your channel through your Hill House series and I was hoping you'd eventually make your way to this one! Some notes for this show: This isn't technically part of the "Haunting Of" saga, so you don't need to look for hidden ghosts--there aren't any. This show is a lot less horror and a lot more psychological horror. Also, a fun fact: Mike Flanagan signed on to do Hill House with netflix, and they wanted him to do Bly Manor, and he agreed to do it only if they allowed him to make Midnight Mass, because this is his passion project. Mike is a recovering alcoholic and grew up as an altar boy in the Catholic Church, of which he now carries immense catholic guilt and trauma. This show was his way to cope with what he went through as a child, which led him to drinking. Also Oak, don't feel too bad: I've never hated a character the way I hate Bev Keane, and concurrently, I think Hamish Linklater deserved an Emmy for his portrayal of Father Paul--what an outstanding and charismatic character! Here's all the actors who reappear from Hill House & Bly: - Carla Gugino (Olivia Crain / The Narrator) - The Judge - Rahul Kohli (Owen) - Sheriff Hassan - Samantha Sloyan (Steve's wife) - Bev Keane - Annabeth Gish (Mrs Dudley) - Dr. Sarah Gunning - Kate Siegel (Theo / Viola) - Erin Greene - Alex Essoe (Perdita) - Mildred Gunning - Henry Thomas (Hugh / Henry) - Ed Flynn - Robert Longstreet (Mr. Dudley) - Joe Collie

A small setting is perfect for horror/thriller shows and this show thrived in this setting! The actors have done a phenomenal job for this series

So glad you're enjoying this show. It's a personal favorite of mine. I might actually sign up for Patreon just to watch the full-length cuts of these reactions, if they are up there.

There is an appeal to living in an isolated community. Short commute, peace and quiet, closer to nature. Big negative is that everyone knows your business. Very few secrets in a small town.

Was thinking the same thing. A town of 300 where everyone is uber religious sounds like a bit of a nightmare.

Dude the Brady Bunch was on in the 70s and that actress was probably in her 30s back then. Mrs. Brady would be in her 80s at this time--it ain't her. I never thought I'd think or say it, but I think this series is even better than Hill House. I guess Mike worked on this script for like 10 years, and it shows. The actor who plays the priest does such an amazing job. I've only ever seen him in the TV show The Newsroom and the movie The Big Short. Flannagan is set to do I think two more series, one of which is based on A Turn of the Screw, and I think there may be yet another adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower directed by him, I would assume in show or limited series form. This guy has done so much to reinvigorate, reinvent and raise the level of quality for horror and mystery/thriller, I'm looking forward to anything he does in the future. Glad you guys are watching this one, and so soon after Bly Manor. Oh yeah and I don't think there's meant to be any "hidden" background easter egg creatures or ghosts in this one, it's just pretty much straight-forward.

I think he was referring to the Brady movies from the 90's. The show based on Turn of the Screw was The Haunting of Bly Manor. I think it was released two or three years ago. This fall he has one coming out on The Fall of the House of Usher.

Quinn seeing an 8 foot tall figure ‘That one [cat] is kinda tall’ 😂 In all seriousness though you have to freeze it to really get a good look at how high the eyes were Edit: Oak’s so real for his reaction towards Bev after poor little Pike. The actor of Joe absolutely smashed that scene it broke my heart man

Happy to see you guys continuing to follow Flanagan. Can't wait for his House Of Usher (not to mention Dark Tower...🤞🏼). I all-caps LOVE Hill House and I get more into Bly with every rewatch, but Mass has quickly become my favorite. After you've seen it all, there's a behind the scenes book that you might want to grab. Tons of interesting info about the show and Mike F. Great reaction as always!👍🏼

Fantastic show. It just builds and builds, and the final payoff is so worth the wait. And always great seeing people board the Bev hate train this early on :) And just to clarify: the picture Riley had in prison was of him and Erin, not the girl from the accident. So he definitely didn't know her prior to that night.

55:02 I honestly couldn’t say if I would or not. For this reason alone: what if I had grown up on the island? Who is there that you haven’t known your whole life? Island life, I figure, is much different than life on the mainland. How many strangers do you see in an entire year? Maybe one or two? And wild animals? Nothing that could hurt a man. 🤔🤔🤔

hell yes!!! so jazzed you guys are reacting to this. i feel like it’s a bit underrated (at least it doesn’t get as much hype as the the haunting anthology) but it’s brilliant. it’s the one mike flanagan series that’s his completely original work. i’m pretty sure he’s said it’s his favorite. kate siegel’s performance in this series is a favorite of mine. i’m glad you’re watching this one after some of his other works because it is very distinctly flanagan (he really dives feet first into those monologues)
and so it begins... | MIDNIGHT MASS [1x1] (REACTION)
