I had know Head Injuries, Bird Noises, Postcard, 10 to 1 and Red Sails and then heard this. Holy shit. Blew me away. This song (and half album) feels like surfing. The first solo is like hot dogging up and down the wave face and then the break into the solo of driving into the tube. Moginie lets fly again and its a long tube. The rumbling break down to Hirst's washing washing cymbals at the end of the solo is the tube collapsing and you're shot out on the wash onto the inside break and Moginie's new solo break is like whipping up and down the wave face. It's just always been a surfing experience for me. The live version - well that's raw power!

That first guitar solo is excitement and energy personified. The power and the passion indeed.

I always thought it was Martin doing the solo but after looking at them doing it live, was Jim. Very under rated guitarist.

Martin Hearn: Jim plays the opening solo; Martin plays the middle solo: Jim plays the third solo. The live version from the Capital Theatre has Martin’s solo edited out.

The axe-work on this song and on the album is simply electrifying

STFU. "If only PG was a better singer, yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah front row Phantom of the Opera. Save your critique for stand-ins, ring-ins, and blow-ins. Then pull your head in. PG, his voice and the energy with which it was delivered was a huge point of difference responsible for much of what appealed. Great music is hard to date, never gets old, and is always relevant. On the list of best Australian albums, Powderworks and Head Injuries definitely meet the great music criteria, thanks in part to PG's distinctly original sound and energetic delivery. Listening to those albums still, almost 40 years later I feel they are both perfection, which would not be so if PG could sing like Johnny Farnham

Terrific early Oils song. Peter Garrett did indeed have hair in the early days of Midnight Oil (and their predecesser Farm). Maybe he's not the best singer, but there's no doubt that the Oils were an exhilerating band to watch. Rob Hirst's drumming was always amazing.

+Brian Deacon They were both highly theatrical, which added a certain element over and above the great music.

If only Peter Garrett were a better dancer, the Oils could have been a world class band.

FILMPOT Productions Midnight Oil are Midnight Oil with Peter Garett as singer..without him they would not be the great band that they are..'holding a tune' ??? ..its okay if you dont like the way he sings with passion and conviction but not everyone is has such a narrow appreciation of what good singing is

12 million records worldwide and purposefully changed styles from album to album. I'd say they had all the success they wanted.

They were always world class, and when live few could match them for passion, intensity and tightness. PG had an underappreciated vocal range with the strength of a megaphone, and the gift of the gab. His lyrics summed up the essence of Australia so accurately. They will always remain my favourite Aussie band.
