to be FAIR, I've been on that actual island. it's called skelling michael and it's a few miles off the coast of my home county in Ireland. it has a summer colony of puffins nick named the clowns of the sea, as they can look a bit comical waddling around. apparently they inspired the porgs. actual monks lived on the island in the huts and never left, eating nothing but birds and fish and growing a few root vegetables. it's an interesting place. as for the salt plains, it reminded me of the snow scenes in Crimson Peak where it was white on top and red dirt underneath as if it were bleeding. Speaking of, I think I saw a credit for Benicio del Toro in this?!?

I feel like the best advantage of having the porgs in this was it was an easy explanation for all the nests and birds seen in the distance on the island. XD That island they filmed on actually is a major nesting point for puffins at certain points of the year.

I always interpreted the Ewoks as serving the plot of RotJ because they lacked guile, and are essentially uncorrupted. Their connection to The Force was undifferentiated between light and dark, as essentially naive and noble savages, and because of this, the Emperor's foresight could not account for them. Everything happened like he had forseen, literally until the Ewoks got involved. The lack of blinking was still... unfortunate.

No kidding: In the opening dog fight when Poe Dameron’s ship was stationary I was very aware that the lighting for his cockpit didn’t match the scene. I’ve never noticed an error like that in a Star Wars movie on first viewing. Also the movie was tonally inconsistent, it jumped around far too much, Snoke was built up then unceremoniously killed before he could be properly developed, and they tried to get a social commentary on horse racing in there. And because of how much time we spent elsewhere the character ‘Rose’ had the best arc when Rey or Kyle Ren were meant to be the main focus. The last Jedi could’ve beeen edited into a (probably much better) stand-alone Rose-Finn movie.

I agree with their review. Overall it's a really good film, very entertaining, and beautifully filmed. It does suffer a bit from this self awareness that it's a Star Wars film with its goofy humour and blatant merchandising, but after a second viewing it didn't bother me as much. My favourite parts were Rey on the island, and Rey and Kylo's Force chats. Still hate Rose though lol.

Lightscribe225 I mean there are a lot of people in The Resistance. There’s no reason one of those people can’t play a critical role in the plot and thus be introduced as a new character. And the movie spent considerable time developing her throughout. What’s more, it was apparent to me in the first few minutes wherein both she and Finn had the same background in tech and grunt work that they were going to be paired up by the end. I simply don’t agree with the idea that new characters in The Resistance can’t be introduced, and when they are going to be introduced, I don’t see how Rose wasn’t a proper way to do that.

Spoilers: How did maRey Sue get almost instantly from Snoke's chamber to the Millennium Falcon? How did the thief know that the rebels were sneaking in shuttles to a nearby planet, when the admiral didn't even tell Poe what the plan was? What was the significance of maRey Sue seeing near infinite reflections of herself in the analogous force test cave? If Snoke gave Ben the false future image of maRey Sue turning and helping him, then how did he not know Ben's plan to kill him? Why is only a single ship equipped with a tracker?
@firerbenoit2808
@firerbenoit2808 6 жыл бұрын
1. Travelling at the time of plot. It might not have been very far away anyways,plus she's got Force Powers 2. What? 3. The significance was symbolism and because it's a cool visual. 4. Arrogance. He believed Ben would just do whatever he wanted without question. You might notice that Snoke treats Ben like absolute shit throughout the entire movie. 5. A single ship is equipped with a tracker because it's a very advanced prototype. Rose says as much. Thus it makes sense why not every single ship might be equipped with it.

I agree. It was really good. I wouldn't say I was as captivated by it and in love with it as Rogue One, but I did really like it. It does have some great scenes, but it didn't exactly throw me many curve balls, and there was a moment with the rebel fleet plot where I felt disappointed, thinking "Oh...so this is all that's going to happen in this middle chapter." I think the only real memorable parts of this movie were purely visual, like when the ship gets torn up from lightspeed or every salt planet shot (compared to Rogue One which I remember very distinct character based scenes of). But that's not that bad. It's familiar, especially with the Snoke shit, and that can be disheartening.

It's the same level as any other Star Wars movie - great bits, bad bits, amazing visuals and some flat characters, but still a truly enjoyable expirience. I'm happy because Rey and Kylo fucking HOLD this movie (and his/Luke's story arc is just a good piece of writing), but then there are moments as stupid as Padme's sudden lobotomy in III or Luke's 'my family died? yey, adventure here I come!' no-fucks-given from IV. SPOILER BELOW My only real problem is that if the Violet-Hair-lady actually TOLD her people what they'll do, then Poe would not send Finn and Rose, and they would not give them out to the first Order, and the whole fucking second part of the movie would not happen!

@spiderlily723

Again - why should a general reveal sensible information to one of her captains, one who was degreaded not even hours ago? I'm not sure how many people actually were left in the dark - we know Poe was and that later he convinced people to help him with mutiny, but for me it was more of they were pissed about the plan being to run away, not just because they were kept in the dark. So it's still about respecting authority and knowing when to retreat, both of which Poe desperately needed to learn at this point. +Some part of it was to make you the viewer emotionally side with Poe to then feel his emotions; but the logic behind it still stands, at least for me.

Actaully on of the main reasons for the porgs was to hide the puffins that inhabit Skellig Michael island. Instead of going through the trouble of avoiding catching puffins on camera, and losing good shots because a puffin wondered in, they simply digitally painted the porgs over the puffins.

Wait, what was the surprise at the end of Empire Strikes back? The fact that "Dark Father" was in fact the father of the protagonist, the fact that the protagonist got a prothesis for his lost hand and wouldn't remain mnaimed for the next movie, or the fact that the secondary hero wasn't saved in the last minute and actually had to be saved in the next movie?

There are a lot of movies and albums I've had to warm up to before I really enjoyed them, and those usually end up being my favorites. However, The Last Jedi is one those rare movies that gets worse every time I see it (I thought it was good but not great at first,) and almost nothing in the entire movie makes any sense even in context. I always thought The Force Awakens was okay if not overly fanservicy, but it was mostly setup... only for TLJ to either ignore it or give a lame resolution. The whole movie just feels like a bad fanfiction, and Solo does as well although that wasn't as boring - just unnecessary and took away a lot of the mystery about Han's past. I guess it's better than Attack of the Clones at least.

There being similarities to empire is unavoidable with it being a middle film, so it will be dark, it will have the main character be tempted by the main villain, there will be a plot twist, it will be darker and just by being in the star wars universe there will be things that are repeated. I don’t know what you guys are talking about, I felt genuinely shocked again and again in this movie. I went in expecting the unexpected and still felt surprised. And this movie delved into new territory more than any movie since the original trilogy. I didn’t feel like it was retreading new ground at all, unless it was with the specific intention of subverting expectations.

It is retreading. The master dying again, the Sith trying to turn on each other, except they butchered the ending to ROTJ.
@HarrisBoe
@HarrisBoe 6 жыл бұрын
HolyknightVader999 they didn’t butcher it, they improved it. The Emperor was one of the weaker parts of the original trilogy. We knew nothing about him, so him being the “big bad” doesn’t really give the conflict with him as much emotional weight as the conflict between Luke and Vader. This time around, they cut out the baddie who doesn’t have any significant connection to the protagonist, and made it so that the main villain is now the character that the main character, and therefore the audience, has some sort of attachment to.

+HolyknightVader999 retreading a few grounds doesn't change that the majority of this movie did it's own thing. That "hole" scene down to the rain scene was fuckin tense, in my opinion.

Harris :Introducing an Emperor-esque character with no explanation the removing him just as fast is not an improvement. The original trilogy had the benfit of introducing a new universe so no one knows the true extent of how involved the Emperor is. This one came as part of a continuation with no explanation as to how he slipped under the Jedi radar.

Honestly, I feel like I watched a completely different movie than everyone else. It wasn't perfect, but I really, really loved "The Last Jedi" and I thought the good by and far outweighed the bad. Like, I'd probably give it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10- pretty good, just not quite perfect. And my entire family also really liked it... as did all my friends who have seen it. As has basically everyone else I've talked to who saw it opening weekend. Wait a minute... it's almost like on the whole... people online can't always be trusted, and nit-pick things to death for no reason? ... ... ...nah, can't be...

I liked it but am a little iffy about how much I liked it. I'll definitely be checking it out in theaters at least one more time to really soak it in and hopefully come clarify my perspective. In terms of legit criticisms, though, I think it could have been tightened up a bit with 10 or 20 minutes cut without having a significant effect. And I agree with Brad's assessment that some of the humor does feel a little too "modern", if that's the best word for it. However, most of the jokes land just fine. Altogether I liked how the whole point of the film seemed to revolve around the general theme of "fuck expectations." Like they said, nothing is really shocking, but the story does take a few surprising twists. In fact, a few of them were stuff that I really hoped to see after seeing Force Awakens. Altogether, much of it almost comes off as a deconstruction of sorts, something that I'm always partial to. Also, having also rewatched Force Awakens and read some other opinions on the Last Jedi, I really have yet to see much in the way of legitimately worthwhile negative criticism. Yes, there are issues here and there, but the film making in both are strong throughout and while some actors are better than others, I'd say the performances generally range from good to great. Most of the complaints seems to stem from nitpicks and conveniences that people conflate with "plot holes" or just a general disagreement with creative choices. This factors can make me dislike a movie, but given the strength of everything else around them, I'd would never make as strong an assertion as "it sucks." Then again, the internet isn't always the best place for measured criticism.

I really liked it as well. If I had one criticism for it, it would be that some scenes felt like they were longer than they needed to be. It was like they didn't want to cut anything out of the film, when they kind of needed to in a few parts. But other than that, it was a very well made film, not the best Star Wars, but very solid.

OMG, I thought the same damn things seeing Dragon Tattoo. Like, exactly the same damn things... As for Last Jedi; had some good, had some bad, overall was likable. Rey and Kylo's fight was really great, high point next to Luke's. Mark Hamill was just perfect and his ending fight was really stunning. Plus, weird milk. Can't have Star Wars without weird milk.

I was kind of gobsmacked by this movie, actually. After enjoying Force Awakens but seeing plenty of flaws in it and generally liking Rogue One mainly for that last act, this one I pretty much loved with very few reservations. I guess something about this one just particularly resonated with me. I really have no hesitation saying this is in my top 3 of the series.

Only if they address a lot of inconsistencies. Like why a cruiser can wipe out an entire fleet by going to hyperspace but the Rebels never once thoight of doing that at Endor. Or why they bother introducing Phasma and Snoke at all if they have less screen time and impact than the Frozen short in Coco.
