+sonicjrjr14 Yeah, I think Zootopia, Deadpool, Hail, Caesar!, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Witch are the only interesting or worthwhile films to come out so far this year. Maybe Kung Fu Panda 3 as well, depending on how much patience you have for the creators trotting out the same exact themes again to diminishing returns. Jeff Nichols's new movie, Midnight Special - which they're expanding into more theaters - received good reviews, but as with Hail, Caesar! & The Witch, it's bound to be divisive.

I totally forgot about the whole "racial profiling" thing that happened when Judy Hopps first sees Nick. That was so spot-on. And yeah, that line that is basically the animal version of "you are very well-spoken/articulate for a black person!" Ohhhh my god this movie gets so many specific parts of VERY touchy issues, just hitting the nail on the head... and just through metaphor! I totally expected this movie to be very half-assed in using animals as metaphors for real bigotries, but I was really impressed. Even taken aback, at times, in a good way. There's lots of other little moments like that, too.
@pinoypizza8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I live in one of the countries that got Zootopia earlier, and I was completely stunned at how so freaking good it was for such a very weak-sounding premise. Zootopia is also good because it continues to prove the viability of the Disney Revival era. Say what you will about your own personal preferences when it comes to the Revival era movies, but it can't be denied that all of them have had good creative and commercial success. Zootopia continues that, and is another feather in the cap for the Disney Animated Canon.
@mastermarkus53078 жыл бұрын
+nepomusik I don't know about Disney "eras". I think Frozen was pretty mediocre, but it sold well with the kids, so they're going to milk the ever-living-fuck out of it. But Zootopia, Zootopia was legitimately good, was a lot of fun, had a lot of heart and didn't have noticeable plot holes.
@SirBroadsword8 жыл бұрын
+Master Markus I haven't seen Frozen, but I can heartily vouch for both this movie and Big Hero 6. I think this one had a stronger script than Big Hero 6, but both films were a ton of fun to watch. Also, between Zootopia and San Fransokyo, it seems like Walt Disney Animation Studios have developed this really weird niche for themselves wherein they have an uncanny knack for building cities that are incredibly well-designed and drop-dead gorgeous. I can't say I disapprove...

I saw a midnight showing with my 18 year old sister and our mother. We got there early and from what I heard the theater we went to already showed 3 showings of the film before midnight and at first we were the only ones there. Then two guys that look like they are from the military sat in the same row as us. This is easily one of my favorite animated films of all time. I pretty much agree with everything that you guys think. The tiger jump scare made me jump for real which does not usually happen for me. An artist native to Mexico saw a Spanish dub of this film weeks before the American release and drew this. pandapaco.deviantart.com/art/Broken-dreams-Zootopia-fanart-592242050 After seeing that I knew that Nick was going to have a traumatic mishap as a boy scout but I was still not prepared for this scene. I was a boy scout up until about 6th grade and if I were to have watched this movie as a child then I would have cried because I was very close to doing so as an adult.

My favorite thing about movies like these is when they play around with the fact that the characters are all different types of animals, and use that to reflect their personalities, mannerisms, or integrate it into the world as a whole. Naturally, this movie was absolutely perfect in this regard! On top of that, I was amazed at the mature issues it was able to tackle, and none of it felt ham-fisted or forced. It would be great to see more of this city in the future, especially since we didn't really see the Savannah district.

Just before I watched your Midnight Screening I came out of Zootopia. And I also was very delighted and entertained. And at first I was worried that the movie would told me over and over again what the message is with the simplest methods as the message was rammed down my throat in the first minutes. So I expected another mediocre Disney movie. But it kept better and better, there was a lot of energy and creativity, the jokes mostly worked, the story was okay and also: The characters worked, I loved the two heroes. I had a lot of fun! Way more fun than in Big Hero 6 and Frozen. And: the sloth trailer was the only trailer I saw before that (after the first teaser). I laughed hard and feared this would already be the best scene I just saw. Too good there are other great scenes, too. My trailers at this screening: Kung Fu Panda 3 & Ice Age: Collision Course.

The Fullerton, CA DMV is the only one in the northern half of Orange County. While that doesn't sound too bad, it means that it's the only one within a huge chunk of suburban L.A. After finally seeing this movie, I can't say it's really something I'd like to watch again. The movie is so ridiculously heavy-handed with the prejudice/bigotry theme that it's practically the ONLY fucking thing they talk about. From the beginning child's play scene all the way to the cliche "if we work together, we make happy" monologue Judy gives, it is RELENTLESS with satire, talk, or instances of prejudice save maybe two minutes breaks in between the hammering. It would have been SO much better if it was a subtle thing, but it isn't, it's at the forefront the entire time. It's not that I disagree with its message, but, having grown up with that message being equally pounded into me, it's one that I REAAALLLY don't need any more of. And that's what's too bad about Zootopia, it was a movie that opened up a whole new, interesting world and had wonderful characters and writing that turned out to be just yet another After School Special about the redundant message on how bad racism is. God, why not just emphasize how hot the sun is while you're at it?

You guys missed out on the trailer I got, some Disney shit called "Nine Lives". Kevin Spacey is a CEO-workaholic something or other, who, for some goddamned reason, is turned into a cat so he can appreciate his family. @michaelbyrne56068 жыл бұрын
Zootopia is SOLID. Upfront, I love the relatable protagonist, the abundance of animal culture, the visual palate, the majority of the writing, and the unity of the plot. Bogo I found myself constantly surprised with, because simply from his set-up...I could never tell if he was going to roar at Judy or remain at room volume during their tense scenes. That's Idris' sheer charisma and Ginnie's adorabunniness working. BUT... *SPOILER* I just couldn't keep consistently invested in Nick. Aside from what you guys pointed out: Jason Bateman as a fox...I mean, I like Jason Bateman. But his ENTIRE performance just seemed to be static character, never really shaken or affected by anything. His backstory I felt was animated fine...but the muzzle incident focus rather than showing a progression of his bitterness didn't fully sell me on his worldview shift. And...the post-conference scene and resolution to it. This is where I felt myself almost severed from sympathizing for this guy. Judy describes the situation as simply a truthful reversion that's blown out of proportion, and Nick singles her out for her inner prejudice towards foxes, and even threatens her. Even after she bought him the popsicle, even after she got manipulated and condescended by him time after time, she still tried to see past her initial perception to give him a chance. And then, he spitefully ignores her when she reaches out to him again, and responds to her heartfelt and tearful apology in the most callous way possible. Oh, so as payback for her mishandled explanation, you're going to tease her with a label in return? Herbivores may have dampened your childhood, but no one made you spit on your friend's insecurity. Screw you, you dishonest, fondling, Robin-Hood/Flynn Rider wannabe. -_- (END SPOILER) That said, I really respect Disney for creatively tackling the race issue as well as they did. It opens up discussion of preconceptions and ambition that will be great for any kid. Judy is love, Judy is life. Also, glad that they managed to make Alan Tudyk blend into his Duke Weaselton role. Anything changed? Maybe Nick could've been younger, and some of the names altered: Hopps-> Hopper, Lionheart->Leone, even Nick Wilde...Xavier Fogle? Vic Xavier? And now idea for a blue heron named Harold Crane surface. I have way too much time on my hands.
@Lawlaliet8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Byrne I don't think he's static, I think he's more cynical/dry sense of humor. That's why he might come off as static in a way, since well he's this jaded guy who kinda say's "fuck life and fuck everything about it."
@michaelbyrne56068 жыл бұрын
Kanashe I get the cynicism, and I get that his change at the end is meant to be indicative that his life is going in an upward direction...but those scenes earlier made me feel that this guy just turned on and off his caring for Judy on a whim. If you wanted a stronger resolution to his outburst, you could replace his walking away from Judy with a remorseful retreat. Think of it...a moment where the guy, lashing out for a lifetime of neglect, not only does it towards the one person who's stood up for him, but in a way that seems to confirm what other people think of him. A moment that says, "You're just like everyone else...wait, what have I done??" That would be such a great moment of progression.
@Lawlaliet8 жыл бұрын
Michael Byrne Hmmm...I agree that would have worked better. It does make me wonder if that wasn't done 'cause of the run time or 'cause they didn't wanna make it too heavy, because the movie was already quite strong on addressing all this other stuff, so maybe at some point they had to stop and go "Wow..Okay we HAVE to light this up somewhere."
@ambskater978 жыл бұрын
+Michael Byrne Perhaps they were afraid of it going against the whole theme. I mean, everyone has those moments of slipping, thinking they're free of making prejudice or such vague and heavy statements. When someone calls you out on it, you listen and cope with that fact. Having Nick get the "moment of realization" would just come off as inconsistent with the moment and the whole point. That's just my opinion though.
@michaelbyrne56068 жыл бұрын
+ambskater97 Not necessarily. Nick's frustration was understandable given the implications, but Judy's real eye-opener was supplemented by the widespread paranoia that people gathered from the crisis and her interpretation. Even Gideon's appearance afterwards shows that the people who know her character can change firsthand. I felt like Nick's reaction up till the bridge scene was framed as an obligatory punishment for an incomplete opinion. If he immediately expressed shame after threatening Judy, it would've strengthened the growing prejudice of those observing. Like, he looks at his drawn claws and Judy's face and realizes his own self-doubt. That's the ultimate psychological effect of racism...and as a reaction to his own actions rather than others' words, it could've hit that final nail for Judy to see the heart of the problem.

I agree about the trailers. With the exception of Finding Dory, which actually put a good fin forward, I was very unimpressed by the other trailers shown. It could turn out that every single one of those trailers were poor representatives of decent movies, but I doubt it. For the record, the other trailers were: The Secret Life of Pets Storks The Angry Birds Movie Ice Age Collision Course The Jungle Book (the latest live action remake) Yes, I was quite relieved when Finding Dory finally showed up. I will say Jungle Book looked better than most of the other things. I guess I'll ultimately save judgement for when I inevitably see it. It and Beauty & the Beast are probably the two live action remakes most on my radar right now, one because it's soon and the other because it probably has the most effort behind it. How well are these live action remakes doing, btw? I haven't checked the numbers.

Shit, its a mystery? Guess I should wait until after I see it. I'm glad to see you guys like it, the only other review I read of it said "yeah its pretty good I guess". I'm probably gonna have to go out and see it by myself since I don't think my family's interested.

Spoiler alert; It was excellent and I was glad I didn't spoil myself on the plot twists. And the film has gone on to be the second highest grossing original film of all time (behind Avatar, which can hardly be called original.)

Not gonna lie, I wasn't impressed with the first trailer I saw of this movie (not the sloth one), but it's good to know that this turned out to be a great movie!

In all fairness, is any movie truly necessary? (in regards to Finding Dory)

Bah... Lloyd, being the cat that he is, will only care that you call him to dinner. So feel free.... but just out of your neighbor's hearing.

Great to know that the film is pretty good, was the 3D any good?

+Caleb Baral (icebird2636) It was good in the theater I saw it. No stupid 3D gimmicks and there are some scenes that are pretty stunning with it.

there's a lot of positive response in this and in the comments, which is good, because when I told my brother about this positivity, and he said a bunch of people he knows hated it and said it was crap.

+CptZSLight It sounds like people who hate to hear about discrimination are the ones who really have it in for this flick.

It was actually kinda good parable on stereotyping people on race and sex in a way. It's not obvious either.

My only problem with the movie is the logistics of the furry world Zootopia is set in, which really rustled my jimmies for some reason. Why is the city divided into 12 climate-controlled regions for the various animal species? Granted, its not like Hunger Games where you're trapped in one region your entire life; anyone can roam wherever they want. But no wonder there's only one metropolis within a 200-mile radius of Judy's family farm; all their taxpayers' money is going toward building an unnecessarily climate-controlled and lavishly-equipped city while literally the surrounding 40000 square miles are rural farmland or wilderness. Its like if New York City said "ok so we're going to spend $2 trillion of your money to make Manhattan like the Yukon tundra, Bronx like an African rainforest, and Queens the Australian Outback. Screw all of upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New England".

I wish animated films were released both dubbed and original. I really want to see it with Jason Bateman's voice in it, not some Polish dude.

A species related name (Otterton) seems odd, until you realize that you've just been subconsciously tuning out all the surnames that end in "man". The most unoriginal variant belonging to action/drama director Michael Mann.
