I saw this a few weeks ago and it is a very interesting and good looking watch. Not a bad price point considering all you get here. This blue dial variant is the best of the bunch. The case and lugs are quite exquisitely executed. I think you can definitely wear this in a wider variety than just dress formality. I really don't see what the big deal with having 19mm lug width is? It's a classic and very common lug width for many vintage watches and quite appropriate for this style/design of watch. And, if you're into vintage watches, and if you are looking at something like this I would imagine you're like to be into vintage watches, then you are probably very familiar with 19mm and have straps in this range already. Besides, squeeze in your 20mm straps which is probably the most common and abundant strap option size around, maybe throw in a curved spring bar to assist, and you're good. As with the pulsometer.. it's just a detail on the outside for "doctors".. luckily, it's pushed out to the edges enough where you almost don't even notice it. And if any one ask something like "... are you some sort of doctor?..".. then have some fun and reply "... yes, I AM SOME SORT of doctor". As with the squished 6? i've seen worst violators of this space. Look at the Longines Heritage Military (ref. L2.811.4.53.0/3 ) An otherwise cool modern heritage piece, what were they thinking when they decided to stuff the small seconds, date window and 6 all in the same space overlapping each other?! The date window overlaps and cuts out both the small seconds AND the 6?! At least the 6 on the Multifort doesn't touch or overlap or cut or get cut out by the date window.. nor did they actually physically squash or change the proportion of the 6 to differ the other numbers on the dial (12, 6, 3)... a situation my Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer suffers from with its 3 and the date window nearby.. But, there's a lot to really like about that watch that make such detail ok to overlook.. but, I digress.. There's definitely a current growing trend in bringing back sector dial watches. You can see many examples such as the new Orion 2, Pelton Sector, Vario Empire are just a very few that come to the top of mind as of recently. Not a bad thing, just a mental design note of what I'm seeing more of these days outside of vintage-style dive watch.

I actually don't mind 19mm myself. Never had an issue finding the accessories I'd like for my vintage Seiko. Have a small stockpile of straps, should I buy a modern Datometer (and a stainless steel/non-plated be made). It feels gimmicky, is what I'm getting at... I hate needless decorations on my watches. Wouldn't quite call it a "complication," but for me (personally) it would never see any use. Perhaps a non-Doctor model? I agree, not the worst date/numeral squish I've seen, but I cannot help but feel this would have been alleviated sans the Pulsometer. Yeahhh, plenty of sectors releasing... Happy to see a return to this style.

@@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett I get it about useless "complications". And, for the record, I sold my SPB089 Blue Alpinist as part of that reasoning. A nice watch I got at retail but I never needed to use the compass no matter how adventurous I think I am or will be. Honestly, the only scenario I think I might use one is if I somehow got lost in the mountains on a snow or ski trip.. but then again, I am unfamiliar with the terrain and likely do not carry any physical maps on me so I wouldn't even know what direction to head. Better off using ears and eyes and trying to guestimate what direction to head. Additionally, not only is the compass near useless, but I have to monitor the orientation and baby the unsecured crown because of my OCD.. I did find myself asking "Why do I need to draw as little or as much attention and energy babysitting a compass feature to be cardinally orientated perfectly. I will never use?!" If the price is right and you really feel it will add something to your collection worth holding onto, suer, get a Datometer, modern or otherwise. Actually, I will also state 21mm is actually not a big issue either. Perhaps the next most commonly uncommon modern lug size. With only 1mm difference from either popular sizes of 20mm and 22mm, you can pretty much squeeze a 22mm strap in or the negligible sizing gap of a 20mm will make 20mm straps also a viable solution if you cannot find a 21mm in the design you want. I think 21mm is sort of more useful as an odd lug size since you can adapt both 20 & 22mm straps which most people are likely to own already.. versus 19mm where most will probably have 20mm, but not necessarily 18mm.
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett 5 жыл бұрын
A “complication” is anything beyond the hour/minute/second of your watch: the date or a power reserve indicator, up to a minute repeater & tourbillon. Complications are added functions to the *physical movement* of your watch. A compass on a doodad crown & stem is a decoration. It’s important not to mix those up. One adds actual value and function to your watch while the other simply adds function, perhaps with added value. (You likely know this - for anyone reading this, hope this makes clear what I’m trying to say).

Comment on the case - it's thick for a dress watch. If you regularly wear suits or sport coats, unless you get all your shirts tailored or custom made, you will be buttoning some of the shirt cuffs on their tighter second button. To slide under this without making a protruding bump, you need a slim watch. The mido baroncelli line does that duty beautifully, as it is one of the slimmer autos out there. Hell, it's slimmer than most hand winders. Therefore, I'm not sure if I personally would consider the patrimony for true dress watch duty. It is a lovely design though (minus the date window issue). Or maybe I should be less cheap and have all my dress shirts tailored so I can use the looser first cuff button...
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett 5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, strictly for those thicker watches? Yeah, I find 12mm-13mm an acceptable thickness for the tool watches of my collection, but due tend to lean towards my dress watches being much thinner.

Yes Mido! I sold my Commander a couple years ago. I knew it was a gem with it's day/date complication and the salmon dial was so unique. I have never seen another one like it. And believe me I've looked. Was selling this $170 Mido for $350 worth it. Hell no. But it keeps me looking. I like this new version very much. Those lugs are so cool. Sometimes just one minor detail is all it takes to make a great watch.

Agree completely regarding the unnecessary pulsometer and how that screws up the 6 index, which then interferes with the date window. That was the first thing I thought when I saw the picture of this otherwise beautiful watch. Also, who are these geniuses who keep choosing 19mm lug widths?!?

The pulsometer is unobtrusive, and if it is noticeable at all, gives the look of being a bit more tool watch. I've been looking for a pulsometer watch for my sister because she is a nurse, an appreciation of the important work she does. Not that she would wear a nice watch while working the ER, but just as a nod to her profession. Sadly, I think 40 mm is a bit large for her wrist. The dumb lug width is also not good. I might be able to find straps, but I wouldn't give someone who isn't into horology the way I am that task. Also, the 6 isn't scrunched up if you take into consideration it is exactly the same as the 9, rotated 180 degrees. So it seems to be a stylistic choice.

Great review as always. The lug tip to lug tip is just fine for my wrist, but the 40mm width has me concerned a bit. Visually do you think the pulsometer pushes the size of the dial inward, making it seem to wear smaller than its over all diameter would indicate?

I’m not certain as to what this watch offered in a mass market flooded by repro and other watches, I hadn’t seen the original to compare, however, it’s been cheapified by that exhibition case back, and that strap was naff. And for what ever price it sold for, expected a decent movement. That’s a whopping £704.39 Pound sterling here in the United Kingdom. The case was out of proportion to those small lugs being too small, didn’t like that date window either, a much smaller version with a case size of 30mm minus the crown would have been better. Would I buy it? NO. Too overpriced.
