I gotta admit I wasn't a fan of it at first, he sounded super uninterested in the work. But as I rewatched all the cutscenes after playing, the voice fits Edgar perfectly. Yeah, when I played this as a kid, I found it pretty fun, but also kinda hard to continue from about that point where you get infected and have to face the alien soldiers, which bummed me out since it was basically dealing with hitscanners just like in any other shooter of that time. The beginning just stuck out to me too much and it was way too good lol, the mystery behind this base and some unknown virus which turns humans into some really creepy creatures which aren't flesh eating zombies (well, almost) was something new to me, the atmosphere was interesting, and it was the first game where the horror was so much to handle for me, that when the scientist broke the window and went through that disgusting mutation process, I actually stopped playing and asked my older brother if he could continue this part for me xD. He made fun of me for that, but after about a minute he went kinda silent, and, while he tried his best to not show it, I could tell he was starting to get creeped out himself lmao (but to his credit, he actually had the balls to keep playing unlike me). Despite never finishing it, I didn't regret the purchase.

I think Isaac Clarke is a little bit more of the every man since he was essentially the future's version of a Geek squad tech. This guy is on an emergency response team trusted enough to enter one of the most closed off military instillations in the whole world. Even if he's on the lower spectrum it's not as everyman. Isaac definitely has more personal reason for taking the mission. Anyways there is something you said that I really like. It's when you talk about the horror experienced when destruction and chaos meet the mundane (the Ishimura and the Sprawl etc.) I really like that. it makes a lot of sense
@MrHammers2 жыл бұрын
That's fair, Isaac isn't a soldier and definitely not combat trained. Cole has that edge over him, but it's still close enough to compare them and thier games. Neither of them are doom guy or master chief or anything but they still save the world haha. And yeah, thats what makes horror work to me personally. Silent hill is another great example of this. It creates a great atmosphere

Things I remember; always the cutscenes- the hidden dialogue, “his skin melted off” “they just lost one team and now they’re sending another” “fascinating”- the last one is in the medical tent but is difficult to get playing- maybe only after the barrel boss? Oh and scanning stuff- scanning enemies and bosses while alive. The first time you meet the alien parasite in a busted jar- the sounds they make… The death light bridge that kills you if you touch it- but you can inch along the beams to avoid about a dozen or two enemies. The UFO in the level Blue Book- and firing it’s canon The Theta- and that you can kill it in the fashion it was originally to have died- scan the tank at the first level and read how the acid is suppose to kill the things once exposed to air. That headshots with the pistol are 100% instant death as opposed to other guns besides the sniper. When entering the aliens weapons you can see all those tanks- and zoom in and you see Thetas. A good moral question in the lab Torture the infected to death or leave them there? Which is better? Also the possibility of one of them being a scientist that’s mentioned a scan in the room- a datalog on suicide. I remember the extras, Romeras and so on are a bit funny and the calm logs of Gray, and how giddy White is. Also “touch the rail” Pain noises “How did it feel?” “It’s hot.” “That’s wrong, it should be cold, touch it again.” Pain noises “Correction, it was cold.” XD Nice comedy- until you realize you talk to your boss for the last time later in the mission Edit Also you can cap the aliens before the portal

I remember as a kid I bot the game because of its bad ass case and thot thare would be cool gray aliens and stuff sadly thare was only 1 part but when I finally sow them behind the glass it blue me away with its ery niss I soo loved it.
@MrHammers2 жыл бұрын
The grays defiantly weren't a big part of gameplay, even though they were the focus of the plot. I wish you had more chances to interact with them, but seeing them so sparingly also made the mystery of it all feel more powerful.

I didn't knew that you could sniff out bodies to replenish your mutant energy bar, it reminds me of that easter egg in wolfenstein 3d where you can just drink blood of the ground if you're heavily injured.

The FOV!!! It's so bad, at the beginning of the Gameplay chapter I show footage of the PS2 version and you can see the FOV comparison, it's the worst I've ever seen tbh, no idea why they made it like that.

I know I'm late to the video, but I wanted to share a fun gameplay tip I noticed YEARS AGO. With each death of your team, you gain more health. The health bar doesn't move, but I distinctly remember seeing my health bar lose less of its pool each time I took damage, and I think it's a subtle mechanic to show Ethan's resolve to push forward.

This game was awesome when I was a kid. Played the hell out of it. I remember randomly scanning things in the first level and laughing at the soldiers wearing adult diapers. The final levels were tough asf for me with the aliens with the force fields around them

I recently played through Area 51 thanks to the Project Dreamland free version. I liked it, shame it didn't get a true sequel as Blacksite Area 51 2007 was yet another reboot. Wish it got remastered or at least made backwards compatible on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X like FEAR recently.

A solid 7/10 (remembering its overall ratings from way back then) rendered unplayable for me due to the abysmal screenshake. I hate it when they do this instead of improving the weapons' oomph by more delicate means. Great Max Payne joke though, appreciated.

Something I found odd was how in the beginning when your team is going down with the elevator the infected look more like the usual live infected zombies, but when you get out of the elevator the infected look more like aliens, and we see that scientist who mutates instantly.

This game is one of those games I remember weirdly well despite it being like 17 or so years since I played it. But the other PS2/Gamecube game I remember really well is Medal of Honor Rising Sun. I don't know what it is. But I spent hours on that game. The first mission of trying to escape the Battleship in Pearl harbor has stuck with me. Even when I recently went back to play it I still had fun. Though mostly due to nostalgia.

This game helped me appreciate voice acting in video games. After playing this game as a child I realized that David Duchovny was a star. Ever since I kept tabs on voice actors like David hayter, Keith David, Phil Lamarr, and many more. Pretty cool to see this game get some love

I grew up with this game I absolutely loved it, played it again a year ago and it holds up pretty well in my eyes, really captured the feel of 2000's games, especially the trope of having one way of playing the game and then like halfway through it completely tosses up the mechanics with new things, i.e. a new combat form, several games did that in that time period

i was obsessed with this game as a kid, I remember getting it for like 5 bucks cuz ps2 was long dead and I ended up loving it a lot more than I thought I would. It was also one of the first ''horror'' game I played along w resident evil 4 and 5 later, this game made me like horror games in general even tho it was rly action based

I personally LOVED this game as kid, and wished there was more like it, its atmosphere and tone were perfectly dark and mysterious. i love this game so much i wrote a essay in my english class in middle school about it, i altered the names and events slightly and rewrote the story of this game as an essay and it got a decent grade haha. seriously though this game was SUPER creepy. i used to be terrified of playing this game. i think area 51 had a longer lasting effect on me than any other game besides the old resident evil games when i was a kid. something about how real the idea of an alien viral outbreak happening in area 51, and how terrifying it would be to be the cleanup crew responsible. i was horrified when i saw the cutscene of the doctor turning, when he splits open and stretches out. that scene gave me nightmares lmao. i even remember being terrified on crispy when he turned on you and you fight him in the dark room with shadows cast by the large industrial fan. it had subtle horror to that built on you, like the creeping realization that there is more intelligent life form within the base than humans, and the horror of seeing the staff burning HUGE piles of infected corpses as that was their only option was just awful. then to see those burned bodies come back as mutants anyway. stuff of literal nightmares.
