Old shotguns sometimes need a little TLC to get 'em in tip-top shape. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder of MidwayUSA, restores the stock on a Remington Model 11 Semi-Auto Shotgun. He'll show how to remove the old oil, repair and refinish the stock, and recut the checkering.

I would initially think watching an old guy do tedious and time consuming work on an old gun would be boring, but this is like the tenth video I've watched today and i can't stop watching. This is awesome. Larry is like the Bob Ross of guns

Painstaking work, especially checkering the stock. Doug Carpenter repaired and refinished the stock on my Dad's old Model 17 Remington. He redid all of the checkering that was worn smooth on the wrist and the forend. He also repaired numerous cracks, just like on this Model 11. It's a fantastic job, and after watching this video, I now understand how much work it was for him to get it completed.

Many people will undertake a job like this without understanding what is involved, and yet unwilling to pay the price to have it professionally done. The value of these videos is to provide an understanding of the what, why, and how, before one steps off on something that is above their ability to do it themself.

I have my Grandfather’s Remington Auto Loading shotgun made in 1908. Well used, several major dings and cracks but otherwise a very functional and usable shotgun. My Grandfather, who served in France during WWI, passed in 1963. When I handle the shotgun I think if him and wonder how that ding was caused, what was he doing to cause that dent and crack. As much as I admire Larry’s very professionally done stock rework, I would never dare doing such work on mine. Larry’s work turned out beautifully, but mine has my Grandfather’s soul.
