Properly sanding a gunstock is an important step in the finishing process. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, shows how he sands his Nearly Perfect stock in preparation for finishing. He covers both the proper use of a backer and the raising of the grain between each sanding, giving the wood an even, smooth surface, ready for sealing. These techniques can be applied to any stock finishing project.

I met Larry at a Rocky Mountain Elk event in Reno, NV. He was so super nice and even gave my daughter a gift out of his pocket. Great man who loves guns and hunting!

These videos are so informative. Somebody else said it, I'd like to have all of the Gunstock Finishing and Refinishing videos on a DVD for current and future projects and quick referencing by steps/chapters. He does gunsmithing the right way. This is a business tip for a new item for Midway USA..

Mr. Potterfield, thank you for doing this video. I have been looking for tips and techniques that I may not be familiar with. I should've known to come to Midway USA first. I personally love the way your videos are done, crystal clear, concise and to the point with little or no wasted time on your part or mine. I know the videos are edited and any imperfections are identified and another "take" is performed and that's fine and dandy, that's the whole point in videos like this, I learned more in just under 5 minutes with this video than I have in two hours watching anywhere else. Thank you again

When sanding an electric guitar body, you often use black or dark brown water-based dye after the first, rough sanding. That raises the grain and gets die into the end grain more than flat grain. Sanding that down leaves stain in any end grain and really makes the figure of the wood “pop”.

Larry, I really enjoy and learn a great deal from your gunsmithing videos. I have a aftermarket laminated stock for a nice Mauser build. I would like a finish to protect the wood but not color or darken the laminate, but not a high gloss finish. What would you suggest as a finish. Thanks for all you do for shooters and firearm enthusiast. Midway USA is great! C Rhea

Very good instructive videos - they could be a little longer and more detailed, but very thankful they in no way drag out too long! The music is a little distracting - some soft guitar could be less "nervous."

Those are some low grit numbers! I generally move up to 500 grit, then 1,000, then 6,000, then finally 16,000 grit for incredibly smooth finishes. Then again, I'm usually working on bows or knife handles, not gun stocks, so maybe you don't want smooth gun stocks?

You order something from here and you might not ever see it between their incompetence and UPS it's a joke. Who ever is running things suck at their job! Pay for faster shipping and it don't happen guess what you don't get a refund for the service you paid extra for, Nor do you get any compensation for being ripped off or inconvenienced! Dishonest and not forthcoming when it comes to helping their customers get satisfaction. Do what you like but I will not deal with this slow moving, dishonest, tightwad company again!
