As a woman in my mid 20s with wicked adhd, it feels so good to see such a candid approach to cleaning, especially one for a neurodivergent household. There's no shame attached to the food items that went bad in the fridge or freezer, no berating the waste of food. It is what is, it's not serving us anymore, to dwell on it is only going to cause us more unnecessary pain. Chuck it, move on to the next piece, and clean away with the weight on your shoulders that much lighter. It also reminds me that it's okay that I struggle with cleaning. That doesn't mean I'm a failure of an adult or a woman. And the clean girly aesthetic will never be me, and that's okay. I can have a healthy, happy home without it being insta-perfect. Agree. I learned that limits on how much water washers could hold were put into place a few years back. There’s a used appliance place in my town and they sell cleaned up used appliances. I got my giant top loading washing machine from them last year for around $200 and that included delivery, installation, and a three year warranty. I can fill that big tub with hot water and get clothes CLEAN. I had a front loader for a little while and couldn’t get used to it. It didn’t seem like it had enough water to adequately clean the clothes. A lot of people really like them though. But when this washer bites the dust I’ll just get another used one with a big tub.

Yes! My parents had an old Montgomery Ward washer and dryer set that they bought in the '80s when they first got married. The washer lasted until I was in high school and was too obsolete to fix when it finally bit the dust, the dryer made it to college before it bit the dust and had to be replaced (too obsolete to fix). In that time since, the washer had to be replaced once because the computer in it was a lemon. The dryer seems to be doing alright though. Our washing machine is a top loader from the late '90s, early 2000s. It has sat outside for the past 11 years, pretty much since the day we bought it and brought it home. Aside from the supply hoses, the only real servicing it's needed was a solenoid replacement when a freeze cracked the old one. It's an absolute beast, and we're keeping it till it disintegrates into rust powder

@MsFuzzipoo7 ай бұрын
TLDR: a negligent house manager at my old job put client/staff lives at serious risk by ignoring dryer lint buildup. My current neighbors essentially turned our garage wall/ceiling into tinder because they ignored dryer lint buildup. I'm overly cautious about dryer lint after discovering these fire traps at work (in a house filled with vulnerable people) and in my home. Check your dryer hoses and vents, y'all! I'm so paranoid about dryer lint, but I've got my reasons. About 10 years ago I worked in/managed groups homes for adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness. At one point I began managing a house that was one of our oldest in the company: a huge 2-story house with 15 clients. The dryer was going constantly (each day two clients would do their laundry for a weekly deep clean. Every night the graveyard shift staff ran several loads to clean client bath towels and the staff cleaning rags). When I got to the house the previous manager hadn't kept up on a lot of their duties (exactly why they weren't there anymore!). On my second day there I was assisting a client with laundry and a cloud of lint "foofed" into the air when we pulled out the dryer lint screen to clean it. Intrigued, I grabbed a flashlight and peeked inside the lint trap. The entire thing was clogged with lint. I started pulling it out and it just kept coming, so I decided to detach the hose from the dryer (which went down through the wood floor and extended through the basement). I grabbed the hose and it was _heavy_ and felt solid. I detached the hose at the floor instead of the dryer and was horrified when I looked into the opening to the basement hose: it was PACKED with lint. The end of the hose attached to the dryer was also compacted so much that it couldn't be shaken out. I called maintenance and they took out the entire exhaust hose system that was mounted against the basement ceiling, opening to a gated vent outside. The entire hose was full, and had been for God knows how long. I already got on well with the maintenance crew, but they were INCREDIBLY grateful I'd found that lint nightmare before something worse happened. It was an old wooden house with a solid tube of dryer lint attached to the basement ceiling... running directly under several client's rooms and near the gas lines to the kitchen... An entire third of the main floor would have gone up in a flash. There was a sprinkler system on the first floor and second floor, but nothing in the basement. The crew replaced the dryer and everything attached to it that afternoon. Over the next few days maintenance went out to every house to check the dryers and vents, and administrators did routine checks in the months afterward to make sure all dryers were being cleaned and vents were kept clear. Then, earlier this year my MIL's tenants had the hose come off their dryer and they didn't notice or give a damn. The structure on the property is a duplex: our living areas are completely separated but their washer/dryer (and our washer/dryer) is in our shared garage Their side is always filthy and I end up wiping their washer and dryer down because it gets coated in lint, dust, and dirt (I'm sure wiping off their washer/dryer is a weird thing to do but it gets SO DIRTY... and I'm weird anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). While wiping off their dryer I noticed the wall behind it was a different texture than the rest of the garage wall, and the textured area went up all the way onto the ceiling. I took a closer look and saw the texture was due to a thick layer of dryer lint. The hose had come off and the dryer had been spraying lint freely... the garage walls are gray so the color blended, but I couldn't believe the amount of lint that had shot up all over their half of the garage to the ceiling, forming a thick coating. They _must_ have seen it! I took a picture, grabbed a ladder and spent several hours removing caked-on lint from the ceiling/wall and from every surface of the nearby water heater. We live in a very dry area. We also live in Hawaii where people enjoy shooting off fireworks to celebrate everything: if the day ends in "y" it's a reason to light fireworks (it's illegal but rarely enforced, and the worst offenders are usually off-duty police officers 🤦🏻♀️). With all that lint, one wayward spark would have been enough to get it going. The garage would go up, and if not put out quickly both sides of the duplex connected to it would be next. After cleaning I took another pic and immediately sent the before/after to my MIL (my partner and I live in the back duplex with his mom... our houses are connected but we have separate living spaces*). My MIL and I put a new hose on the dryer and mads sure it was secure. When her tenants got home from work she has a talk with them... they're a nice family, really. Just not the most proactive about certain things... *because this wasn't long enough already (⊙_◎): My partner and I are in our 40s. I realize it may seem odd to people on the mainland for a couple our age to live with a parent, but multi-generational housing situations are SUPER common in the islands. One of the reasons is cultural (younger folks take care of elderly parents, older retired folks take care of grandkids while their children work, etc. and honestly, it's quite nice). The other reason is because housing/rent is _incredibly_ expensive, especially on Oahu. I know none of that info was necessary, but I've received *so many* judgmental comments from people unfamiliar with island culture over the years... I'd rather explain first than put up with judgment later!

I worked for 6 hours on my own and hit most of the things on my list in addition to reorganizing my entire kitchen. Now it’s done and everything is so much better. What I like most about this video is it shows you where to start by suggesting you start with the items that take the longest first and let them sit while you work on the smaller tasks and also it gives you a good punch list of items to do. I think many people don’t do this because they don’t know where to start or what to, so they get overwhelmed and don’t do anything. Thank you for this. It helped me a lot.

Great video Mack, with Jason's help. You can get rid of ants in your cupboard by spraying white vinegar on the shelves. I had an ant problem in my guinea pig hutches, used all kinds of hardware store natural chemicals, nothing worked. Then I sprayed vinegar on the legs of the hutches and voila - no more ants!! Supposedly it confuses the ants, they lose their scent to travel to the food source.
@katphish308 ай бұрын
I did that in my shower last year and it really works. Not right away and I also sealed up a bunch of little gaps, but it definitely helped. I don't like to use pesticide indoors because of my cats

Many years ago I heard a tip that pepper works to repel ants, so I had the Lady that I took care of add some pepper to Her next shopping list. Well, I didnt know exactly what kind of pepper to buy so I bought 3 kinds. Yellow,orange and regular green. I sliced em thin and placed them all over Her counters. It was a rather well-to-do Family so She had long lengths of counter top. I wish I had taken pictures because 2, 7ft counters and a 4×4 butcher board looks pretty darn cool with a million multi colored pepper rings laying across them!😊 Needless to say, the tip was quite vague and it really was calling for "black pepper"😅... but it gave all the Girls a good laugh clear into the next month and even today 20 years later it still makes me giggle my butt off!😂

Oh gawd! I remember “spring cleaning” as a child! Mom, Dad, me and my 2 sisters spent the weekend dedicated to windows, walls, carpets, appliances, etc. YES, we washed WALLS! 😳 Damn, I’m old 😩🤪
@meloniedropik35398 ай бұрын
You might have forgotten that we had to wash walls because back then just about every adult smoked, and we all did so in the house. That grime from the tar was disgusting! Do you remember how that sticky tar attracted and held on to dust so well that it practically blocked off the air vents on the TV? Yuck! It was almost like it was flocked, like the inside of a jewelry box. It only took about two swipes at the wall to turn the wash rag and rinse water that distinctively disgusting yellow-brown color. We never realized how filthy smoking made everything until everyone in the family quit (and those who relapsed decided to smoke outside because we didn't want the dirt in the house anymore).
@cathycoryell23518 ай бұрын
Yes, washing walls. Not because of smoking. General use, kids, and adults, hands sre naturally dirty, near light switches got dirty from normal use. Same for door frames, etc. We used very diluted spic and span (floor cleaner) and wash cloths. Works well.

Great resource! I believe that the grease trap vent can also go in the dishwasher. Another thing to consider is to use vinegar instead of fabric softener. There are a few benefits, cheaper, less chemicals, works great, but for the context of this video, fabric softener causes a lot, if not most, of the built up gunk in washing machines. I have an old softener cap and I fill that with white, distilled vinegar and put in the softener dispenser as usual. And there is no vinegar smell on the clothes either. And no gunk build up.
@JariDawnchild8 ай бұрын
Using vinegar as a fabric softener keeps towels extra fluffy and absorbent, and holy crap it keeps my glass-cleaning cloths from leaving smears on the windows! 🥰

@@rubi8715 I have used vinegar in washing machines (both new and old) for over 20 years and never had any issues with the seals. Having said that, I add, at most, 2 fl oz of 5% vinegar into 40 gallons of water, which is about 20 ppm acetic acid interacting with the seals. I suspect the very low concentration is why the seals are not affected.

When our last stove died I made sure to get a new one without self cleaning so that it might hopefully last longer. But it is a cr*ppy stove and now I wish it would die early. You'll have to pry my 8,594 Walmart bags from my cold, dead hands...they are outlawed in Washington state now and they are the best thing for harvesting the cat's litter boxes. My oven's manual said to remove them so they don't become discolored, so that's what I did. I cleaned the racks separately with a scrub pad meant for metal surfaces. It took a bit of elbow grease and a small amount of soap but now my oven (and the racks) are sparkling clean.

These tips and tricks are great! I thank you so much for the information. By the way, when I clean our refrigerator, which isn't that often, I typically start at the bottom. That's because the drawers get so filthy inside from people's dirty hands. Or sometimes something spills across a shelf. Once that area is clean, it just highlights how dirty the rest of the fridge has gotten. When we're cooking, we don't really notice the condition of the inside. We just grab the ingredients we need and shut the door. I really love your ideas. You had items on your list that I need to start doing.

Great video! I found out, after noticing a smell in my dishwasher, that it needs to be cleaned on a regular basis too. There is a screw in filter at the bottom that needs to be unscrewed and cleaned. Water also collects under the filter so I take a towel and soak up that water. Then wipe it out with a vinegar soaked rag. I also remove the spray wands, run vinegar solution through them, rinse and replace. This cleaning got rid of the smell and cleaned those parts of the dishwasher.

Reading this, I am glad that I don’t have a dishwasher. Loved this; it made me smile. Always a good thing.

@@gwenmcgowan3283 Google house Hippo commercial. As far as I know it was a little advert that aired in Canada in the 90 and 2000. Its great.

I like using DIY cleaning sprays too. I make window/glass cleaner, tile cleaner APC, grout, toilet bowl cleaner that I use under the rim. I use vinegar and alcohol and peroxide and Dawn and baking soda for the things I make. I was a frequent user of Pine-Sol for years. But, I found out they stopped using pine oil in it. It smells different and doesn’t clean as well, like it used to. I put my kitchen utensil holder as well as the utensils in the dishwasher and a bowl of vinegar to clean them and the dishwasher at the same time. I would’ve loved to have had unbreakable light bulbs. As I watch your videos I know when I am done I will be cleaning different things in my condo. The fridge and the microwave are two things I will be cleaning today. The fridge with warm soapy water and the microwave with vinegar. After reading the comment from Lucycannon, in regards to using the self cleaning feature on my oven. I am often cautious about how incredibly hot the oven gets. So, I clean it by hand. It doesn’t get dirty very often. I keep up on it if something is spilled. I put vinegar in a ziplock bag and put the hand held sprayer in my shower in the bag, submerge it in the vinegar and secure it with a rubber band and let it soak. That works really well. Your videos are fun to watch. And entertaining. You have a great and wacky sense of humor. Hoping all is well with your wife. Take care.

Oooo, very nice job, and great advice!! I can't tell you how many times I've had to pick demons and Moose teeth out of dirty crevices. 😬I would love to plant one of those "Chicken Soup bushes". My son used to grow 🌽in our backyard. My genius grandson once told me that I should plant hot dogs in the backyard b/c they'll grow to be corndogs. Thanks, Mac & Jason for allowing us to sit back and watch you clean. 😅

Found this chanel today. Love your voice and your fun attitude! Going through a lot right now in my family, health things, a thousand projects, and to be honest all of us suck at cleaning. This is super useful and makes the whole thing feel more manageable. Thanks!

Here in Canada plastic bags are now BANNED. Good thing I have 150 of them saved to use for trash bags!

As inconvenient as they are, plastics are destroying all of the aquatic life in our oceans. And creating huge pools of floating plastic out in the ocean that organizations are having to actually place rings of miles long buoys around to clean it all out of the ocean. Plastics are even found in 80% of peoples bloodstreams in lab samples. They also interfere with normal human hormone regulation. There’s nothing wrong with getting rid of plastics!

Garbage bags too? We save plastic bags from other food packaging like cereal bags, bread bags, newspaper bags to reuse for those gross tasks to tie and toss. Save any packaged plastics and put a piece of packing tape over the holes in bottom corners and reuse like the old grocery bags.

In Canada can you still purchase plastic bags? Like the ones you use to line the kitchen trash can or the very large ones you use for yard waste etc?

So helpful. I have thought several times as I’ve been trying to make some cleaning lists that there are things that don’t fit on the daily or weekly lists, maybe not even the monthly list, but I can never think what they are. This is a great start for me.
