As new player of DCS but a longtime enthusiast about the air war in Vietnam, this is great stuff. Really appreciate the referencing of conflicting sources. Undoubtedly the truth is somewhere in the middle. 13 aerial victories in a single airframe is amazing, given the odds faced by Vietnamese pilots. Home turf or not, SAM's or not, they went up against a full-on superpower and held their own. Those were very brave men.

Thanks for the feedback! Vietnam certainly is incredibly interesting for military aviation enthusiasts. Probably because of huge uncertainty of the operations and a very serious threat to the US air power in the form of VPAF pilots.

Lt Cdr Paine was part of the RESCAP force that assisted in the rescue of Lt Cdr Christensen and Lt Kramer. The Skyhawks returned to the Enterprise but Lt Cdr Paine was waved off his first approach as the deck was not yet clear for him to land. As he flew downwind in the pattern for his next approach, his aircraft (call sign Battle Cry 302) was seen to suddenly pitch nose down and crash into the sea. Lt Cdr Paine ejected at 100 feet but this was outside his ejection seat’s envelope and he was killed. It was standard practice for aircrew to check each other’s aircraft for signs of damage prior to landing but no damage was seen on Lt Cdr Paine’s aircraft. For some reason the Skyhawk suddenly lost elevator control at an altitude that was too low to recover.

I worked at Raytheon for a little while in their missile division. I heard that the early versions of the Sparrow did not have conformal coating on their circuit card assemblies and that once they got in humid environments the humidity caused a super high failure rate (90% failure). They often just dropped off like rocks or just went dumb and didn't seek. But the Sparrow still killed 58 Migs and 2, An-2's for 60 total between the USAF and USN.

Regarding the pronountiation of the names of Vietnamese pilots I can not give you an advice, but as a Hungarian I can recommend you that you should pronounce István's family name with Hungarian "c" sound in the place of the cz letters (sounds "ts"). This is a well done video, even though I am a a War Thunder fan. The F-102 kill was talked about in an online forum "Aviation Geek," The MiG fired an Atoll missile at Wiggens's aircraft, which hit the tail. Wiggens radioed that he had engine trouble, then his aircraft exploded. He never had a chance to eject. The myth of "Colonel Tomb" is exactly that. A myth. There was no one higher than the rank of major in the North Vietnamese Air Force who out scored Van Coc. There is also no translation in the Vietnamese language for the word "tomb." American pilots were said to use that story as a way to keep fresh pilots in theatre on their toes.

@@showtime112 I realized after I made my initial comment about a detail regarding the F-102 Delta Dagger. It was a poor choice during the Vietnam conflict, because its mission was not ideally suited for the air war in Vietnam. The F-102 was designed to intercept Russian bombers from far away. Vietnam was not a country heavily reliant on bombers at that time, so the F-102 was put into position as a dogfighter. A role it was never designed for due to its slower speed and limited maneuverability. This made it particularly easy prey for MiG-21s. The primary weapon of the F-102 was also the largely unreliable Falcon missile.

My f4 squadron started flight ops there on May 31 of '68 with 13 planes. Our sister squadron added another 13. It was anything but pretty. Just 2 weeks in, our C.O. was shot down and taken p.o.w. He wasn't returned until the very end on the war. His RIO didn't survive the crash. It was a war that, in my opinion, we never needed to be involved in. The Top Gun program did start up, I think, in March of '69, which did help our F4 crews. Our Vigilante pilots and Rios were subjected to two flyovers each, equalling double jeopardy. The launch video showed a C.I.W.S. Weapon system on the carrier. According to Wikipedia that system was first deployed in 1973 for evaluation and 1977 for Operational Test and Evaluation and was approved for production in 1978. Therefore the video was not of the correct time period.
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
True. All the details are not period correct. And some of that is even mentioned in the video. And none of these videos are 100% accurate. Why? Because they simply can't be. A flight simulation is used as a tool to create them. Developing correct, high-fidelity aircraft modules for the simulation takes years and costs more than a million dollars. AI only assets are simpler, but even those take months to make. And now, imagine how many various aircraft, military vehicles and other ground systems, ships, missiles etc have been developed since the end of WWII? And those that stayed in the service for more than ten years usually went through various upgrades. To cut the long story short, it would take literally a century to develop a simulation with every piece of military hardware in every possible period correct form. The only other way to make videos such as this one would be to use some kind of a 3D animation software and start from scratch. And each video would take months to do and would probably cost at least several tenths of thousands of dollars. There are a couple of examples of amateur created videos of this kind and I can tell you, they look extremely lame with animation at early 1990s level.

F-4 jednostavno nema šanse protiv mig21 u bliskoj vazdušnoj borbi. Ima veoma ograničene manevarske sposobnosti i jedina mu je nada aim-7
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
Ima šanse, kako ne? Samo treba igrati na jake strane. Ići na vertikalne manevre recimo. U kasnoj fazi rata, Mornarica je bila itekako uspješna sa Phantomima.

re: that F4 shot down over water...pilot had nothing on his RWR?? WELLDONE!!
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
Probably not. RWR in those days were very limited. And it is possible that the Vietnamese pilot never even used the radar. Or at least, that he didn't lock him up. That wouldn't have given any warning.

They should have made the F4 with a 20mm cannon from day one!

I cleaned that skin up and they removed the slimers (formation lights) off the aircraft.

Ээ, вы чё! При старте с палубы у всех F4 стабилизатор на пикирование! Конкретный ляп. На 21БиС на разбеге ручка до упора, сам поднимает по скорости. А тут короткая палуба...

U.S. military roundels aren't right. Too big, and wrong proportions / aspect ratios. The bars are too long and too wide.

It doesn’t matter anyway . vietnam defeated france in 1954, america in 1975, china in 1979 . Defeating 3 erstwhile powers is a nice military record

Never understood the need for these bombing halts,particularly when the North Vietnamese were just beginning to feel the effects of the strikes….White House probably felt (naively as it turned out) that a halt would make the North Vietnamese more congenial,far from it it only strengthened their resolve,this misinterpretation of the North Vietnamese mindset continued to plagued Washington throughout the war,leading to costly mistakes and unnecessary casualties…..eventually it was the US resolve that faltered… (operation “Linebacker II ironically was arguably rather successful and if implemented earlier in the war would have yielded the desired results and possibly reduced the NVA effectiveness in the south)* *this is just speculation on my part…!!!
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
Although we have the benefit of hindsight, such policy seems very naive and counterproductive. The communist side was ready to pay any price to win and that's what ultimately decided the outcome.
