MiG 29 UPG is a very versatile multirole fighter jet platform. With proper upgrades and maintenance it can probably serve the IAF till around 2038. In any case IAF doesn't have the luxury of retiring them anytime soon as the squadron strength is depleting way faster than new inductions. Infact all 3 legacy 4th generation fighter jets Mirages, Jaguars and MiG 29 should be thoroughly upgraded to the maximum extent and they can serve for a long time. If only the MMRCA was concluded soon.
@spxtfxre12 жыл бұрын
additional numbers of mirages and mig 29s should be inducted as well, 21 migs from russia and mirages from countries retiring them. Then those aircrafts, including those currently serving should be fitted with newer avionics to compensate for the depleting squadron strength and capability.

Disappointed that Jaguar was not re-engined. They have life left in them, cheap to operate, and their parts issue fixed by Jaguars from France. AMCA, to replace Jaguars in Strike role is still 10 years away and for them to fully replace Jaguars would take 8 more years, i.e. 2040. Tejas Mk2, which will replace Mirage 2k-5 and Mig29UPG, is also 7 years away until induction and for them to fully replace these aircrafts will be at least 8 more years!

All those upgrades will make it a very capable 4+ (or very close to 4.5) gen fighter so pushing them close to 2035-2040 shouldn't be an issue. If a Gallium Nitride based UTTAM radar is integrated, then it'd be a cherry on top. Also, since it's primarily an air superiority fighter, integrating python 5 missile would be good too, but Russia might not allow that.
@hrushikeshavachat9002 жыл бұрын
DRDO has already integrated indigenous mission computer into Mig 29K and can do the same for Mig 29 used by the IAF. This will allow us to integrate python 5 with Mig 29. Also, IAF has integrated new radars under the UPG program. So, I don't think IAF will go for Uttam radars in the new upgrade. However, I think an AESA radar will make more sense and buying it from international markets doesn't make sense as we already have Uttam

Our border situation is perfect for Mig29s to stay as the surprise eliment to the enemy provided we keep upgrading them. We have a perfect base aircraft. Though it's a dogfight beast hands down, But dogfight is 'one in a million' Case in today's scenario, BVR fights is in such highly advanced stages that dogfight stats don't matter anymore. @123Suryasis2 жыл бұрын
In the video, the discussion was mainly for the avionics, EW suite and weapon upgrades but omitted one main thing, the airframe degradation over time, the same issue IAF is suffering with our Mig 21 fleet. 50 years is a very long time, especially the Russian fighters designed and developed during Cold War era by Soviet Union. Their moto was to developed more rugged and cheap and versatile aircraft rather than highly advanced aircrafts like Western. Mig 29 or the 29UPG are derived from 1st gen mig 29, mostly made of alluminium - Lithium alloy, no FBW and using that aged airframe, both manufacturing and tech wise, would be a big challenge by India alone as Russia never provided even moderate degree of ToT for it. Even if you upgrade the avionics and electronics of the aircraft, airframe fatigue is gonna be a major problem and India probably needs to make another deal with Russia for that. With the current situation and sanctions, not sure how effective Russia can do that. One thing to clarify, licence manufacturing of certain pats of the aircraft doesn't mean ToT which a lot of people think is true.

@theheretic67392 жыл бұрын
It is said that the MiG29UPG if compared to Rafale F3R is only lacking in 5th Gen warfare abilities like AESA radar, Super cruise, active stealth EW suite. For a 4th Gen plane like F16 or J10 , the MiG29 UPG is more than enough - India also bought a bulk of ER - extended range versions of the R77 and R27 after Feb 2019 to bolster BVR capabilities of its Russian origin fighters like Su30mki and MiG29UPG. The IAF sought the MiG29 to stand off against the Chinese J10 and J11 which were the bulwarks in the Ladakh region if any escalations occurred. Adding 4.5gen+ abilities to MiG29 INDIGENOUSLY means two things - 1. possible delays in Tejas Mk2 and MRFA induction to services.Maintaining a sizeable fleet without any new inductions.Also prompts a possibility where 21 unused MiG29 airframes from Russia dont cost more time and money but bolsters the fleet strength. 2. even lesser dependence on Russia to maintain an important fighter during any possible conflict while leading an edge over all types of Russian and American origin jets of rivals.

You cannot replace MiG 29 with Tejas Mk2. T/W ratio of Tejas Mk2 is not comparable with MiG 29. We need something for LAC and Tejas Mk2 will not be sufficient

IAF should get some TEDBF to replace Mig29s.

Why will IAF want a Deck Based Fighter ??

@@CyrusInIndia I guess he means ORCA, which is an IAF version of TEDBF.

It should be retired gracefully rather than making it serve till 2035. Better buy 2 extra squadrons of Rafale to replace
@hello--world2 жыл бұрын
These are conservative calculations but nevertheless, 2 squadrons of Rafael would cost $4.5 Billion, while 3 squadrons of upgraded Mig29 would cost just $1 Billion. If they have life left in them, then it is better to go for upgraded Mig29 to maintain our squadron strength till 2030 at least.
@ShashankRockerYo2 жыл бұрын
@@hello--world New Rafales are more capable, will last in service till 2050. Plus reduction in types of planes flown will simplify logistics and strengthen Indo French defence cooperation
@hello--world2 жыл бұрын
@@ShashankRockerYo Any which ways we are going to procure Rafale F4's through MMRCA competition, but the issue is that currently it is on paper and we can expect it to go in production after 2030. So even if we place its order right now, we will receive it after 2030. Hence, if we want to replace all our legacy aircrafts (Mig-21 & Jaguars) and maintain at least 30 squadrons by the end of this decade, upgrading both Mig29 and Mirages with minor upgrades like AESA radars, Astra integration, improved self protection suites+SDR and necessary airframe upgradation, would help us to keep these aircrafts relevant for atleast a decade from now and these would cost less than $15 Million/aircraft, so we can't upgrade 7 squadrons for less than $1.8 Billion (3sq Mirage-2000+ 4 sq Mig29). Also these upgrades have already been developed or are in final stages of development for HAL Super Sukhoi upgrade, we can share the same. Thus we can maintain modern day relevant 30 squadrons by 2030~ 15sq Su30-MKI, 6 Squadrons Tejas MK1/MK1A, 4 sq Upgraded Mig29, 3 sq Upgraded Mirage-2000, 2 sq Rafaels= 30 squadrons.

@@hello--world simply buy more Tejas and Rafales. Simple
@hello--world2 жыл бұрын
@@ShashankRockerYo Rafael, we are already buying and Tejas MK1/Mk1A won't be a one on one match for upgraded Mig29, hence upgrade is necessary to sustain atleast 30 squadrons till 2030.
