Great video Russ!! Ty for the shoutout!! 🩷 I agree, this might be the last generation where we fully get to own our physical carts. Having a way to physically back up our copies is a really great investment. I carry around a tiny little case like that too, and walking around with the potential to lose $500 worth of games is always really scary lmao

The "click switching" of the games is a deal killer for me....but the idea is intriguing. Hopefully they could put some custom software on it down the road that could make it not need to do that. You can use the dumper to allow you to make a separate SD card per game for a proper backup and just pop it into the MIG to play it if you want. SD cards are cheap enough to allow for that. Good idea, just needs some polish and updates to get it going.

The in and out thing blows. Just worthless in this v1 version. Next version needs to have a menu. You go in. Select game. Play. Then it's gonna be a must have.

I don't remember where exactly I saw this, either on youtube or a short video from twitter or so, but there are switch docks that let you "reinsert" switch cartridges using a remote, the intended use for them was to have multiple cartridges attached to the dock and swap between them but it also works for the MIG switch

Very interesting review. This doesn't look like a finished product based on the hassle to choose which game to play. I would wait for a future version which allows to connect via Bluetooth with an app, or Wi-Fi and an internal web server to select which game is active. Wireless capable MCUs can be tiny so it's definitely feasible.

@@Jokerwolf666 you can see how it works even better when a cartridge switcher is hooked up and the MIG Switch is plugged into that. With the cartridge dumper, wouldn't you still need a Switch to extract any bios for it to work on emulation devices? Or do Yuzu and Ryujinx work with the roms without needing any Switch bios keys? Just thinking whether the dumper may be kind of pointless without a hacked Switch to do the same and more.

I was excited for this back when I first heard of it because I switch between all my pokemon games often, (I'm a crazy lad working on a shiny living dex for home) so I was hoping to use the MIGSwitch to lessen the wear and tear of my carts and the cart slot. when I found out you have to pop it in and out to switch games all my care for the product was thrown out the window. I did however find a differnt product, there are 3rd part dock extrenions that plug into your switch's cart slot and let you have 4 games "plugged into" your switch at once and switch between them with the press of a buttion either on a remote, or on the dock extention. so I will probably end up getting on of those.

I do wonder if they can update the mig switch to display all the games on the homepage at once cause there are official cartilages that have multiple games on them that display both at once on the homepage. Or at worse I think it would be better if they had a button on the top of the cartridge that you just press to cycle games rather than ejecting it constantly.

This actually does make sense for me since I'm literally in the same situation. Bunch of physical games, the carts are taken out and put into a mass storage (i have the same case even but it also houses my vita games). That said, I feel like its a little too soon to get something like this since the switch is still Nintendo's main focus so they have more eyes on this right now. It only takes one software update to render it useless unless the Mig company accounted for that and this bypasses any and all updates they do going forward. I will likely pick up the dumper though since i do want a back up of my things. [edit] watching a bit further, yeah... having to re-insert the flash cart a bunch of times is really not good for the hardware so ill pass on this iteration, if they ever add a selector on the cart itself then I might consider it later if i can get my hands on the dumper before that.

When it’s docked you can use one of those multicart devices. Just cycle between the carts - so you don’t have to keep doing the in and out. It’s baffling how they haven’t just included a button or something, then you have the current method as backup (if button fails). Feels like MIG 2.0 might be the one to wait for.

I'm right there with you in the warning department, but I don't think this is realistic. This would require at least altering the MAC address for your device, which means custom firmware. It also doesn't do anything for your account being banned. That is something that is only on Nintendo's side. The only thing you could do is fake what your actual Nintendo account is, And what games that you own. It is true that they have cracked the system wide open like that before with CFW's, but I'm not sure it will happen again.

I mainly wanted to pick it up just because of how useful it would be, but at the same time I started using Yuzu like 2~3 weeks before Nintnedo killed it and I kinda like the idea of just using my ROG Ally to play my backups due to the better hardware and being able to record videos of the gameplay on the go, which is something I can't do on my Switch 😅 1 thing I missed in your video though was comparing the performance of a original cart VS MIG switch. I recall some other guy on KZbin did a comparison and it did seem like the loading times are slightly longer with the MIG switch, so it would be nice to see something regarding this just to see if it's confirmed or maybe just a special case, since I've only seen 1 video talking about that.

I can see myself using one, or a competing product, to do what you mentioned: Backup all my physical game carts so I don't have to carry an expensive collection with me. But before I would do so, they have to redesign the product so that it works like some of the multi-game carts that exist for the Switch, such as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters Collection, and the Dragon Quest I-III Collection, wherein you plug the cartridge into your Switch, and after it reads it, you see each individual game on your Home Screen, as if you had downloaded them all digitally. I mean, currently you can just upgrade your Switch's micro SD and then just buy digital copies of your games as well without the need for a cart at all. Barring that I suppose the other option is using smaller SD cards with fewer games, then you'd know you coulg get 3 games on one card know which they are and reduce the amount of wear on the cart slot in the Switch. @@bern9642I think the reason they don't sue individuals is because, the damages are less than the cost to pursue those damages. Think about it, spending thousands to pursue $60 * games in damages, even if when they win, that person owes the legal fees. Even if Nintendo had legal evidence to go after individuals for $6000 games damages, 10,000s of those legal fees. How many pirates would be bankrupt, instead of actually pay? Trying to sue millions of people at the cost of thousands each will lose more money than it recovers. So they're strategic with their suits both to show they aren't permitting the copyright infringement and to stop the largest swath they can. He isn't paying a thing because he says he doesn't have the money. Yuzu probably isn't gonna pay the 2 million. I don't know how rich they are. Use a cheap micro controller to power on the MIG communicate with it, and allow you to pick the ROM. Depending on how they've implemented this, we're talking a few dollars with of materials to build and maybe 20-25 dollar retail price.

Do you have a hard and/or softmodded switch, did you use the cartridge on one of those yet? Do you still need the extra data when used in a modded device?

if ur on a modded switch why tf do u want this? you can literally just play any game for free without it
@gjphekkelman
@gjphekkelman 2 ай бұрын
@vexnity460 because you can't hotswap sd cards. Sure, you can swap games in and out once the sd is full, but then when I want to play a game that's not on there I have to make space and put it on there. Not the most practical, but as a tinkerer I just wander.... what if... and why not... And before you say, uh just buy a bigger sd card... it will fill up with games i still want to play and haven't yet or games I haven't finished yet. But mostly because the main question of the video was, can you bypass the necessity of the extra files that are not present or needed when pirating so you could use the mig with pirated games... at which point I'm asking myself... did you even watch and fully comprehend the video... because you seem daft

I bought one back in the middle of January, haven't heard from them since. They were quick to charge me but I haven't received anything yet or any news from them. Emailed them a couple of days ago and haven't heard back from them.

DammitJeff convinced me to just get my switch modded. I was debating buying the dumper and cart, but that doesn't do anything for capturing updates and patches for long-term game preservation. It also doesn't let me rip the few games I own that are digital only. So I'm going to send my switch to one of the modders on etsy.

Nice review, Russ! I think I'll worry about backup hardware after the Switch is discontinued. The idea is appealing, but having to click the cartridge in-and-out to change games sounds absolutely awful for lists of more than 10 games. I generally only carry around 4 or 5 games at a time anyway, so this wouldn't really benefit me other than getting a jump start on backing things up. The carts feel pretty durable, so I'm doubtful they will break any time soon. Thanks for the review, and take care mate.

Hopefully, the Mig itself will be cracked, then it might be less hassle to backup games, but switching games will still be a problem. Maybe it'll all function better on a molded switch, at some point. It's pretty expensive to buy the mig and dumper.

I like the idea of having this since i have over 20 switch games, but i dont like the idea of removing then reinserting the cartridge to switch the games out..... I think the simplest solution would be adding a tiny button on top of the cartridge to switch the games with just a touch of the button, either that or a sort of menu that pops up and allows you to select the game you want....

For the stated purpose of switch game backups, I think the dumper plus mig switch cartridge are reasonable. You would never put 100 games on the sd card. You'd put a few games that you're currently playing on it. Then switching between them isn't very cumbersome. The other positive compared to a modded switch is that theoretically you can play online without a ban.
@DammitJeff

You're more likely to be in a situation where you're banned with a migswitch than you are with a modded switch. At least with a modded switch you're entirely disconnected from online entirely.

@@DammitJeffif you're playing your own first bought games, there's no risk. Although, I guess that's only true if you only use one switch? what happens now if you use your games, in two different consoles? How do those not get banned, it's it cuz they're not at the same time?

I would imagine if only a couple of the same cartridge appeared at the same time it wouldnt lead to bans, simply due to the pre-owned possibility. It's probably more likely that certain cartridge identifiers will become blacklisted over time if the dumps are mass distributed online

The end result we would all want is to have a cart that's able to be put into a console, modded or not, and pop up as an original game, with online support. We're nearly there. This is the start, kind of a janky way of getting it to work, but, you can see the possibilities. I'd give this another year before they either implement their own way to a)put xci or nsp, drag and drop onto your SD card and b)a better way to select which game you're wanting it to be, be it with software or a que system that you make on your SD card to have some sort of order of your games.

Back when I had the Sky3DS, I would put like 4-5 games on a smaller capacity sized mSD card. I would have like 10 of these mSD cards for all the games I wanted and just swap out the mSD and cycle through the games on that specific mSD. Sure you would still need to carry around extra cards with you, but you didn't have to worry about your physical games getting stolen or lost. Also, so you know what's on each card, I would buy 1 mSD from a different company, or a different version, this is so the card would look different and would write down what was on that card.

Now that rumors suggest we’ll be getting a Switch 2 within a few years, one can’t help but wonder, ‘What will become of the old Switch?’ Does it have a future? Is it worth modding? Can you install Android? Is it valuable for emulating other classic games? I hope this is something you might address in the future.

Having to constantly eject and insert to switch games is a dealbreaker for me. I also share my game cartridge library with my two kids, so the fear that two or more of us accidentally log into the same game and get console banned is another deal breaker. Additionally, if i have to get up from my couch to walk over to the switch to eject/insert i might as well just swap the card out. I guess for someone who doesn't share cartridges, primarily uses handheld and has a relatively small collection (so that you dont have to cycle 30 times to find a game) it could be useful.

Mig Switch needs to preload a menu with the list of all the games on the SD before loading it, so it would be easier to switch between games, similar to the R4.
