Mighty Raju Celebrates 10 Years At Wildlife SOS!

Celebrating a significant milestone- Raju's 10th rescue anniversary!
Raju was snatched from the wild as a young calf and held captive for nearly 50 years, enduring unimaginable hardships. He faced the brutal process of phajaan repeatedly, as he was ruthlessly sold from one owner to another to be used in the begging trade. His body was riddled with numerous wounds from spiked chains and bullhooks. On July 4, 2014, Raju shed tears of joy when Wildlife SOS rescuers finally freed him from a life of cruelty and abuse.
Now, a decade later, Raju stands tall, healthy, and proud, having learned to trust people who love him. He also enjoys refreshing dips in his pool during the hot summer months, munching on his favourite fruity treats provided by his caregivers.
To commemorate 10 years of his freedom, we are treating him to a special delicious cake and a delightful fruit feast made of his favourite treats!

Raju made international headlines when he was rescued. People saw him cry, his crying made them see that elephants have feelings just like people. He touched their hearts. Now if India would just have the courage to free all the elephants held in bondage, including all those held in Temples. It is time to let go of the past and move into a better future. I feel first there should be a bill passed in the parliament to free all the elephants in India from the owners who are abusing the elephants... Only then I feel these huge giants will sleep peacefully.... When we humans, all alone can't sit in one place for more than one hour, why do we need to tie the elephants with those harmful and life threatening chains? Let's them live in peace and harmony.... Raju was one of the very first elephants I saw rescued in India, the spiked cuff on his ankle was cut from him and he was free of his terrible trauma. I didn’t know until now that he had undergone all that they do to break his spirit (phajaan) more than 20 times! I knew that he had been living and working in deplorable cruel conditions and I think I remember the battle to get him away from his terrible owner for whom he was still earning money even at his advanced age. The Vets who treated all his wounds including his feet which looked to be in a very dangerous condition must be not only expert, but very understanding and his treatment must have continued for a long time and with substantial cost, so my heart goes out to all WILDLIFE SOS’s dedicated supporters. I think I contributed too shortly after I saw the video of his rescue and chains being removed. I am so happy that he is still alive and enjoying his life, and had a delicious 10 years re-birthday cake. Heartfelt thanks, I encourage anyone who can to spare a few pennies so that they may continue their work.
