In my opinion, with the right tools, they're not so bad, disc brakes can be really b****y. Another thing is, disc brakes are harder to get parts for the older the car gets, for instance I can always get new rear drums and slave cylinders for my Toyota TA40 and TA60 Carina's, but not new calipers for the fronts, nor for any end on my E46. I'd rather have SOMETHING I can service, than something better I can't get parts for at all.

Im a truck mechanic and light vehicle mechanic ill just say that doing truck drum brakes are way easier than car brakes. When i did my trade upgrade to trucks everytime i did a set of brakes i felt like i had forgotten to put something back on as it was so quick and easy in comparison

Best thing for doing springs on a drum brake, besides the long nose pliers and the tools for the half turn washers, is a round shoe lace or a length of round cord. Hook it into the springs and you can pull on the springs SO much easier and the pliers are used to guide the hook in. Absolute life changer.. from a fan in the UK and mechanical engineer / former tech.

Drum Brakes: Use a pair of side cutter pliers to push the e-brake spring back and clamp to the cable itself; you'll never cut through the cable, no worries. Might as well use side cutters to grip and remove the castle nut cotter pins too - so much easier to grip and lever them out than the needle nose pliers. Cheers from Canada!
@dGCyanide49Ай бұрын
I work at a clutch and brake place, what i found was easy for the hand brake cable is to use side cutters to grab the cable itself, and use a second set to slide the spring back and then tighten the grip to lock the spring back and then drop the side cutters grabbing the end of the cable and slot it in.

Most dash cams use a "usb mini b" type socket same as sat-navs. (I'm UK based) Meaning you can buy an adapter for your sat nav where you plug your cigarette lighter fuse in to the adapter and plug the adapter into the fuse slot and it powers both the cigarette lighter and the dash cam/sat nav. It is about £20 but well worth the money. I've used mine for the last 4 years with no issues so we'll worth the money

A lot of time and work for not much gain. As he said, the tears really don't do that much breaking for such a light car and all the weight at the front anyway
@autobootpilootАй бұрын
Drums have just as much braking power as rotors but they overheat faster. For a car like this, drums are more than enough. A lot of new hatchbacks still have drum brakes, both from Japan and Europe. And they are not only much heavier than a copen, they also work just fine.
@SoulTouchMusic93Ай бұрын
@@autobootpilootwrong. Drums have way bigger shoes, hence more area, more stopping. They wear out slower because way more material and they're way less exposed to the elements so they are less likely to break. They also don't get as much water in them messing with your braking in wet. They won't break when you try to brake. But yeah, they heat up and don't cool fast at all. Disks are made to cool really really fast.
@autobootpilootАй бұрын
@@SoulTouchMusic93 surface area doesn’t matter. The force applied by the hydraulic brake system is equal in all cases. When the surface area is larger the pressure gets lower and when the surface area gets smaller the pressure gets higher. For performance purposes there is no difference. Things that do make a difference is the size of the rotor or drum because the distance to the centre is greater. And for longevity you obviously want as much material as possible so larger is better as well. There are way more reasons to have large brakes with lots of surface area but pure brake force isn’t one.

A wee tip for you, chap use a decant-sized pair of snips on the handbrake cable put them in between the the spring and the end block then slide the snips up the cable compressing the spring then grip the cable lightly that holds the spring compressed, and makes it very easy to get the end of the cable through the hand brake actuator arm.
@aussiefirestormАй бұрын
