This was helpful, but I felt it glossed over when moving to HA os. I was coming from Docker so I had to move my config, but when I got to the terminal for the HA operating system I couldn't figure out any commands to navigate the file structure or move files around. I ended up installing the Samba share add-on, stopping core, moving the files over, and restarting core. Full Steps: 1. Stop old HA container 2. Make a copy of the config directory. (docker files were easily accessible on a network share) 3. Start up new HA VM 4. Change IP to be the same as old HA in the new HA's WebUI. 5. Install and configure Samba Share add-on 6. Run "core stop" cmd on the HA terminal 7. Replace contents of config folder with old config files via the Samba Share. 8. Run "core start" cmd on HA terminal.

Just wanted to add my kudos for this set of very clear and simple instructions for migrating HA from one host machine to another! I had started using HA on a virtual machine running on a 7-year-old Windows desktop, but my ZigBee USB stick would cut out intermittently (seems like the USB port was too rusted) and Windows would occasionally restart for updates in the middle of the night, taking down my whole setup. And I'd just gotten to the point of convincing my whole family to come along with the ride on HA! So this weekend I finally took the plunge to transfer HA to a Proxmox VM running on a refurbished mini PC to cut out the uncertainty from Windows. Your video gave me the confidence to do it, and it all works perfectly!

Great video. Helped me a lot. I had my HomeAssistant running on a Raspberry pi 3b with a 32GB sd card. It ran since 3 years without major problems. This week I bought a HA Green and followed your advices, thanks for that. I used the button update from backup. A few things which took me somewhat longer to solve were: 1) duckdns configuration. The install screen kept on producing nice rounds...After 3 hours I discovered that some automations worked. So I closed the install window and it took me sometime to find the new IP adres and to get the login screen again. After a change of the forward from the duckdns domain to my local address on my router it finally worked. 2) Missing Bluetooth on the green, luckily I had a M5stack lying around where I could install bluetooth proxy on. 3) ESP Home on my sidebar did not start up, but devices depending ESPhome were still running. Don't know exactly what I did but it works now (sidebar display is gone though)

Unfortunately I have had to restore from a previous backup in the past due to HA dying on me. Thankfully it just works. I'm using the Google Snapshot add-on. Extremely useful. I have it automatically backup at 9am every morning. In addition, as I'm using HA as VM in Proxmox, every weekend I have Promox run a backup to a Proxmox Backup VM on my Unraid server. So I have that extra level security should things go drastically pear shaped. Once again a very good video. It's good to see I'm doing things the right way.

Thanks for another great video! I was just thinking... By the method you explain, starting from a VM under Windows, I still would have to reinstall a few things before restoring HA. Wouldn't it be easier to make a snapshot of the VM, or even an image of the entire Windows HD by using a Linux flash drive (dd or another image software)? I guess that would be a one-step restoring and the only drawback would be the need of a larger backup media.

I managed to follow most of what you were saying, thanks for an informative tutorial. I'm concerned about the SD card failing on my RPi3 rather than wanting to migrate to another instance. I had assumed using a new SD card with a copy of Home Assistant and uploading the latest snapshot (saved to my Chromebook) would restore my set-up if/when the current SD card fails. I also assume that I would have no issues with needing to modify URLs etc as the RPi3 would not have changed. Am I correct in my assumptions?

Hi Lewis, I know this video is old, but can I do a full restore (rather than a Partial) if moving from a Pi3 to a Pi4? I gave it one attempt and it didn't work and I was missing lots of different things. I thought that I couldn't restore the Home Assistant details as they are different installs on both Pi's? Hi, great video! I am thinking of switching from HA Supervised Docker to HA OS. A long time ago i used the docker method as that was advised by HA at the time. But annoyingly i am getting all kinds of messages that my OS is not supported. A bit weird because i used the complete off the shelf images HA provided earlier. Apparently they don't auto upgrade it when needed and now say that i am running things that are not supported... I am not really that good with linux and all the commands. So the snapshot method really makes sense for me. Just flash a new SSD with the HA OS image and then import the snapshot. Will that work for me in my case? I am running InfluxDB, Grafana, NodeRed, ESPhome and Glances. I will be keeping the same hardware (Raspberry Pi 4 running of a SSD instead of the SD card). Any additional tips before i'll try this nerve recking operation :-) Oh, 1 last question. I didn't knew the snapshot worked this good. I always assumed that you'll lose certain (historical) data or config or whatever. Is it truely a complete backup of everything that you did and configured in you HA?

Actually, once the config folder moved from one to other system, I just can't sign in on the new instance! Account is corrupted is some way. Be carefull when trying this ! You will need some more actions to restore the stuff (which I did not yet managed to apply): reset the account password :P

If you are running HA OS in a virtual machine (like I'm doing on my synology NAS), what would be the difference between setting up a backup plan in HA, versus using the backup/snapshop feature of your virtual machine manager. Especially since the latter is much easier to set-up? Just for security, this would work of course if you want to migrate HA to e.g. a rasp pi.
