It's plugged directly into an m2 ssd slot in my pc. What am I doing wrong??

Wow. Let's step away from Home Assistant for a second. This is perhaps THE MOST SUCCINCT, CLEAREST tutorial/walkthrough of a setup process that I have ever seen. You hit on ALL the major and minor issues (what kind of SSD, brands, form factors, adapters, necessary items like spare SD card, https), quickly and directly, without getting bogged down, you step through everything without skipping a beat or requiring guessing/intuiting, and you expertly drop people in and out at different steps and forks (new installation, ethernet/wifi steps, etc.). I thought this video was masterfully done. I don't even have an SSD purchased for my Pi yet, but I now know exactly what I need to do and I may not even have to watch this video again as I perform the update. Superb job, Lewis!

Thanks Lewis. Just started HA and (following your advice (and links)) have just installed my Pi into an Argon one unit with 120gb kingston ssd. One thing you dont say is the word "patience" after installing your backup. I'm got so worried after my installed first reported that supervisor needed me to manually update (for me anyway) before my backup would actually work... and it seemed to take an eternity. BUT utlimately its working and is in a sexy case (not the orginal red/white one) and seems to be a bit faster (but that might be the "patience" I was lacking earlier), Thanks!

What about when you've got a working home assistant running off SD and you want to migrate that to an SSD that you've already installed in a RPI case?
@enerbot2832 жыл бұрын
I tried to use the advice of migrating from a SD card to an SSD as it was supposed to be an upgrade in reliability and stability, lon a Raspberry PI 4. Unfortunately the Raspberry PI 4 does not deliver enough power on its USB ports to run an external SSD in a stable manner. To the contrary the Raspberry PI4 hangs periodically since I tried the SSD configuration (requiring a hard reboot). So the conclusion is , in case of using a Raspberry PIi hardware, to best use an SD card (current SD cards are reliable enough) or, in cadse of an external SSD to use a powered hub.
@EverythingSmartHome2 жыл бұрын
That's not the problem of the advice, that's a problem with implementation of the advice and the parts chosen. SSD is better in every way than an SD card
@enerbot2832 жыл бұрын
@@EverythingSmartHome Nobody said it was the problem of the advice. What I'm describing is simply a reality pertinent to the specific case of using a Raspbeery Pi with a USB SSD : never, never use a USB SSD on a RaspberryPi4 without a powered USB , otherwise you risk an unstable hardware setup that crashes and freezes. This is well documented all over the Raspberry PI forums and is what I observed myself. This is to help other users top avoid the issue. So do not take it personally, it has nothing to do with ego.
@EverythingSmartHome2 жыл бұрын
Fair, but it doesn't apply to all SSDs. I've used a few different SSDs that do not require an external power supply, so long as the main Raspberry Pi SSD is the official/a good one. But that's always been a problem for the Pi 4 even without any SSD is using an insufficient power supply.
@shotleybert2 жыл бұрын
@@enerbot283 I would also suggest, much of that would depend on the power supplied by your power supply to start with. I would certainly go with a SSD over a micro SD any day. But it will need a something a tad more juicy than the "official" power supply. Don't forget the "official" power supply or similar wasn't designed to provide power over and above a micro sd card. I would suggest you get an Argon PSU which has been designed to get as does supply that little bit of oomph for the needs of an SSD. But to be honest mate, I've never been a great fan of any drive beyond an SD card without an external power supply.
@enerbot2832 жыл бұрын
@@shotleybert For sure, using an SSD without a powered usb hub on RaspberryPI4 is a big no no if we are looking for reliability and long term running without freezes and necessary hardware reboots.

Finally getting around to migrating. Looks like HA site now recommends using Balena Etcher and entering the URL they provide. The RPi Imager wants to install an old version 6.2 and the HA link is for 6.6 (32 or 64 bit, rp3 or rp4). I know there shouldn't be any performance differences for the 2 or 4 GB RP with the 64bit OS, but maybe worthwhile for future hardware upgrade?

Great tute!! Is it possible to use the Argon's M.2 Expansion Board as a M.2 USB adapter, so I don't need to get a separate M.2 USB adapter just to install the OS?

Thanks! It should be possible yes!

@@EverythingSmartHome thanks! And do you know if it's possible to access "SD card copier" on the pi itself, or is there not enough of Raspbian running in a hassio installation?

I did this migration and had nothing but troubles :( The Raspberry Pi 4 seems to have a lot of trouble with it's USB ports. On one of the USB 3.1 ports my Home Assistant was basically non-functional. Then I moved the SSD to one of the USB 2.0 ports and things were better, but it appeared to be causing signal problems with the Bluetooth devices I have linked to my Pi. Eventually I moved the SSD to *other* USB 2.0 port and almost all functionality was restored. However random issues persisted, including issues with my Google Home communicating with it (regular failed commands). I am currently in the progress of migrating back to an SD Card to see if it resolves my issues.

I don't want to leave it, but how do I move the data disk back to the SD Card? Can it be done? Or do I need to build out a new HA instance on a new card and restore the backup?

I'm not sure if I should get a Raspberry Pi 4 or try and wake up an old laptop. Now I'm running HA on my main computer in a VirtualBox, but I want my computer free from 24/7 stuff. I'm installing a Unify network so I will be able to power the Pi 4 with my switch over PoE so it should be a clean installation with an Argon sitting nicely on the wall beside the router and downstairs switch. Ahh, being a geek sure creates some hard decision-making normal people don't have to experience😂
