So how'd you go? Did this help you get the data over?

Not really, I need to move 14TB of data

It really did, rsync is awesome. I hate moving data, you never know if it'll actually work, now I can go straight to bed and not worry and wake up with a nice 1621+ all ready to go. The old was a 716+ which I'll use for backup.

It works great. So much faster than the way I was doing it before.

This is great. We used to do this in terminal with a Mac using the RSYNC protocol, but this is way better. Thank you.

Another way that is really easy is to click on a shared folder and select "Mount remote folder" from the "Tools" drop-down menu. You can do this on either the source or the target such that you can either push or pull you files and/or directories. Once you have mounted the remote folder, simply navigate, then copy and paste. When done, you can unmount the remote folder. Note, this approach seems to be very rarely mentioned in any tutorials but is so easy to do.

Thank you so much for this video! All the articles on the Internet use outdated information (RE: DS 7.2 and beyond). This worked for me and I am moving Terabytes of data to a new NAS.

Cheers Emilio. Thank you for the video. I plan to backup, via rsync, my DS1821+ to a cheap used DS3018xs both with 10Gbe; and this video was exactly what I was looking for.

you can do this entirely in the nas itself, via remote folder mounting. I think it is a lot quicker than the method via expplorer

Thanks for your tutorial. How many ways for data migration from One Synology NAS to another Synology NAS device with the same model? I saw, Snapshot moving, Drive Sync, Active Backup, Drag, and Drop from the browser? Which way is the best practice? How do you evaluate these ways? Thanks

Done with the sync system. Got one problem, I cannot rename folders (sorry, this user account has not been assigned privileges to perform this action). I am not sure where to fix that?

thanks for the run down. I considered using RSYNC, but the Folder selection for what we can move or not was limited. I wanted to be more granular. Tried the Drag & Drop method from browser to browser. Grabbing a 1GB folder forgetting that it Zips the file on the New NAS. This adds an extra step. Unzipping. Which can take some time also. So I tried the way I was planning to do this, Drag & Drop in Finder. (MAC) This this appeared to move files just as fast, but did not Zip. Is there a reason one wouldn't want to do it this way?

Hi, how about moving your HD's to a new (bigger) NAS, and afterwards, expending that with additional drives? How would you do that without having to change IP addresses and such ? => Make a backup of the configuration. => shutdown, extract hard-drives and insert them (in correct order) in new NAS running SAME OS version? => restoring the config-backup? Going from a DS418Play to a RS3614RPxs. thanks!

I first used drag and drop with no problem then I used the rsync with a encrypted folder and it fail, then another rsync folder and it worked very well, I was ONLY able to create 2 Task in the rsync task list looks like that is the maximum. I was able to drag and drop the encrypted folder. I will try next what @Peter-Honig mention Mount remote folder.

Does anyone know if my old NAS has issue (not the disk but the hardware itself), can I just swap the disks to the new NAS? Assuming you use the same NAS model.

I'd LOVE some help here. I've tried both methods and find really strange issues with each. The drag and drop method works but once the files are received they come through as a zipped file that then needs to be uncompressed. It's not ideal, adds in extra steps and is doubly time consuming waiting for the decompression. I'm afraid to transfer the really big stuff as a result. The rsync method caused a battery of weird permissions issues and doesn't really allow for isolating folders that much so it will only allow me to select actual directory folders, nothing below that. I'd like to be able to select smaller portions in case of errors during large transfers. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm about to do this from my 918 to an Asustor... But, question for you, considering you're running your 920 in SHR (with such piddly HDDs now) why didn't you just buy a set of new 14TB disks and swap them in 1 by 1? I currently have 2x10TB and 2x6TB (in SHR) in my unit and I swapped in the 10s to replace 6s. SHR allows you to increase the volume size once the 2nd, and above, new HDD is introduced. It takes care of migrating the data and rebuilding the RAID and you wouldn't have had to change/lose the current settings. If nothing else it would have saved you the cost of the 6 bay and the 6 new drives...

This was not really successful for me using RSYNC. I have 40 TB of data to move over and it had only done 12 GB over a week and half. I have a network Bond connect to each NAS that have two networ cards running at 10000 Mbps, full duplex, MTU 9000. The problem is when setting up the RSYNC it will only use the Managed Network card which is only 100 Mbps full duplex MTU 1500. I cannot find a way to get this to use the network Bond hence its a very slow copy. Can anyone help?

When I try and use the Bond network cards IP address it does comes up with the nelpful message Connection failed. Please check you network settings. The management network and Bond network are on seperate networks. All network settings appear to be fine. LACP is set on the managed switch. All other network port settings are copied from the old NAS config. I cannot see anything wrong it does not work. Can anybody help?

@JariNestel
@JariNestel Жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't, it just syncs/ copies the data. For drag n drop, the data dragged and dropped. For rsync the entire content of the selected shared folder(s).

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you did not use the Synology Migration Assistant tech and just remove the drives from the old Synology and then put them in the new one? Then when you turn on the new one [with the old drives] it just says click to migrate. That has been the way I have always used and is super swift.. The only downside is that you can't change from something like SHR1 to SHR2 in the process. What do you consider the advantages of rsync. I normally only use rsync if there is only 1 Shared folder I want to move to a different NAS. - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed Vloggers ]

thanks for the note iamnotapoet. I actually wanted to keep the drives in the old nas, hence why I didn't go for this approach.

@@TechWithEmilio indeed that would make sense in many instances. I just am in love with how wonderfully well the migration trick works. Except a big bug I just found in Active Backup for a google Workspace. After migration it stops working and prompts for deactivation. And that process stalls because safari blocks pop up windows that are used. I was scratching my head for 30 minutes. Then all was well. Not as big of a problem as synology coming out with new models WITHOUT 2.5gbe standard. And 10GbE in all 5+ bay plus models. I think synology has forgotten that is us 2022…. And had not paid attention to what QNAP stated doing years ago.

I'm preparing to do this between my old 1517+ and a new 1522+. I want to keep the old drives in the old nas, and new drives for the new nas have been ordered. Ultimately, the 1517+ will be a backup copy of the 1522+ data. It seems from the video that using rsync will be the way to go, and I won't even have to use a command line. 🙂 The trigger for this was thinking my 1517+ had failed and I had lost all my (unbacked up) data. I've learned. When the new drives arrive I will no longer have unbacked up data.

Thanks mate! I am preparing to move the content of old disk on my old DS211j to a new DS218 with a bigger and faster disk and after looking your video I think I will choose rsync including backup of all settings and try to restore them however I am not quite sure because old one is still running on DSM 6 and the new one on DSM7. Any hints how to proceed in this case?

@@PeterTokarcik Thank you for letting me know. I am finally trying this IRL and I keep getting this error that it either doesn't work or that Rsync isn't set up on the new NAS (which is incorrect) I feel like I have added all the right permissions, and so I was thinking that Maybe it was my Orbi Router, and I think I have it set up correctly with the receiving NAS getting the port forwarding to port 22. But still no dice unfortunately. Do you (or anyone diving in these comments) happen to have an idea why its not working or how I could fix)
