Nas: DS1522+ amzn.to/3DX5B2W
Anyone who works with massive amounts of video or photo files knows how easy it is to burn through all the available storage space on your computer. That's where a NAS shines. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. It's a storage device connected to your home network that you can use as a global storage device for everything connected to the network. Of course, you can also limit and control what devices have access.
In my case, I've been using a NAS as my main storage device for all my video files. With proxies, I can even edit video files right from the NAS without the need for a faster 10GbE network adapter.
Unfortunately, I returned from a recent camping trip to find the motherboard not working in my DS1515+. My solution was to migrate the drives to a new DS1522+. Luckily, Synology makes the migration process painless, and I didn't lose any files!
Regarding backups, create at least one OFF-SITE physical backup. Take it to a bank safe box or to a trusted friend or family member's house. Get it away from your house and preferably in another town or city. That way if a natural disaster or house fire happens, you will have a backup that is hopefully unaffected by the event.

There’s a feature Synology offers with their NAS boxes that’s an automatic offsite encrypted backup, the only thing you need is a friend who also has a Synology NAS. LTT did a setup tutorial on it, and it’s something me and one of my friends instantly went in together on to be able to have an offsite backup that we never need to think about.

I remember that video. I used to watch LTT all the time. I have a local friend with a Synology and we both have fiber internet now. I may have to look into that.

I have a DS1815+, initially these works like a dream, simple, quite and small. The problem starts about 5 years later. Synology use all propriety components. So finding any components that failed to repair means going on ebay and over paying for hard to find items. Then there is when a drive fails. I have it at raid 5 which means 6 drive usages and 2 drive redundancy. Having about 20TB worth of data and having one of the drives fails and try to rebuild. takes like 3 days. I moved away from Synology as my primary NAS, still use it to dump temporarily stuff, but moved onto a home built TrueNas Scale. Initializing my 100TB raid took like 2 mins, I remember that was much longer on the Synology which only has 24TB. I hope you have a much better experience than me, but Synology has not been a good experience for me.

Glad to see that you didn’t lose any data.. My 1515+ ‘S motherboard died and Synology replaced the whole unit for free. There is a known issue with the mother board. I am not sure if the recall is still active..

Another good reason for a disconnected drive that is occasionally connected, is ransomware. I used to have all my backups connected, and the ransomware attacked all my shares as well as my main drives. Even Google. Great video as always Jay. Thanks for sharing.

I see a lot of NAS’s are advertised using a HDD instead of a SSD. I can’t believe that one would choose that. Like your philosophy of multiple and offsite backups. Just like power tools, camera and computer essentials can be expensive.

HDD designed for NAS use are pretty inexpensive per GB of volume. And depending on the Raid setup you won't lose info if a drive fails. Fortunately, I've not had a drive fail since I started using a NAS in 2017.

Great video Jay. We backup 2 laptops, one desktop on our DS920+ with 32TB total 24TB usable. We use a cloud backup called Code 42. It’s had no limit for $10 bucks a month

Woah that's a nice price for backup services. I'm currently hovering around the $7 mark through BackBlaze. Luckily, we live in a time with a lot of great options.

Plus remember, you're not just backing up the data for the potential of destruction, but also, and more likely, the mistake the user might make in deleting files or directories mistakenly. Even having copies of revisions is important too if you've spent a lot of time on the project. Nice wrap up and follow up about backups Jay. I just got done upgrading my QNAP TS-832x raid 1 8tb pair of disks to 16tb raid 1, and soon adding a third for 32tb Raid 5. My storage is mostly just movies and such as well as system backups, so I need the space (and for Plex). My next step is to set up my off site to have a replicated storage of data, still building that out though.

Good video Jay. (You might check into Synology's C2 Storage for your offsite backups. They integrate great with DSM. I don't know about you but losing 5+ months of work because the timing of the tornado and your offsite was bad, wouldn't be any fun.)

with a .bat script you can have it setup to auto reconnect at boot. also using web dav you can set it up with synology vpn and DDNS so you can have it connected to your laptop anywhere in the world

Crazy crazy crazy story for you... what are the odds? I woke up this morning and my DS1817 was dead. Here now, 8 hours later, your video pops up in my youtube notifications. I don't ever watch your videos and the only reason I am subscribed to your channel is back in Feb2021, I watched your video about the elevator build.

I think you got your moneys worth out of the 1515+, came out in 2015ish so that would be 7 years. I replace every 4 years as a best practice.
