Mihawk was a Red Hair Pirate - Here’s why.

Ok so I keep getting comments that mention how Mihawk was already famous before he met Shanks, and even some that incorrectly claim he was the established “world’s best swordsman” before Shanks ever challeneged him to duels. Aside from the second thing being straight up false, the first point does not really disprove anything about this theory. Keep in mind I am fully ready for this theory to be incorrect, but this specific argument is not sufficient enough to prove that. So this comment here is just to address the large number of people who keep bringing up this point to me and answer all of them at once. It is never stated that Shanks challenged him in order to become the strongest nor is it stated Mihawk was the strongest in the world before Shanks duelled him. It is just stated that Mihawk was already famous for his swordsmanship - which Zoro also managed to accomplish before Luffy met him. Zoro was renowned in the East Blue for his swordsmanship and his history of hunting pirates. This did not stop Zoro from choosing to call someone else his captain. On the same note, Jinbei was already famous for decades before he joined Luffy’s crew. Just because someone is more famous than someone else doesn’t mean they are automatically incapable of respecting another person as their captain. There is no concrete evidence of who was stronger at any given time, nor at which point exactly Mihawk earned his title. Any suggestion that there is, as far as I can tell, is no better than headcannon. Lastly, I would like to remind some of the more argumentative viewers that this is a *theory*. This is not an attack on your favorite character. I’m not claiming this is fact, either. I am simply presenting a possibility for you to consider and backing it with reasoning taken straight from the manga. It’s for fun more than anything else, so try to have fun, too. Thanks guys.

I love this theory. I don't know if it will turn out to be true, but that doesn't take away from how easily it *could* be true, how well crafted the theory itself is, and how well all the evidence fits into place. I knew this would be a controversial take -- there are a lot of strongly held (if not well supported) assumptions about Mihawk in the fandom -- but I'm so glad you put this theory out here. It's one of the freshest takes I've seen in a long time.

I think that Mihawk won't be the only Warlord hanging with Shanks on Elbaf. Buggy is going to join Shanks or at least attempt to form a pirate alliance with the Red Haired Pirates. And even if he isn't there for Shanks I imagine he would try to get back the Giant Pirates after they quit especially now since he is wanted again.

That’s an interesting theory about Buggy. But from what we’ve seen, Buggy has never put himself in a position where he is a subordinate of Shanks. I mean, technically Buggy would have been Shanks’s first mate if he hadn’t decided to go off on his own after the Roger Pirates disbanded. I don’t think Buggy will be there in the next arc.

But I think it would be more satisfying to watch them have a real fight, obviously not to the death, to determine which is the greater pirate crew. However, I’m of the opinion that Luffy and Shanks will never have their reunion. Shanks will be confronted with Blackbeard and the fight will end in Shanks’ death.

Luffy / Shanks Zoro / Mihawk Sanji / Benn Jinbei / Roo Usopp / Yasopp I’d love to see a panel of those 5 side by side. It also makes me think that if Zoro and Sanji are his right and left hand, who has Luffys back and front? After all the king needs to be protected from all sides. Jinbei has always had Luffys back and Usopp is always ahead of Luffy… in terms of taking credit for his achievements lol.

Another key comparison between Sanji and Beckmann is how Oda writes their big moments. While we only have one major Ben Beckmann moment, him stopping Kizaru from attacking Jinbei and Luffy as they escaped with the Heart Pirates, this is exactly the kind of moment Oda loves writing for Sanji. Sanji has always been the character Oda loves writing last minute clutch saves for. Mr Prince, Thanks I Needed A Light, The Hunter, There's a Lady Calling Me (Sanji saving Tashigi from Vergo), Sanji vs Doflamingo, Sanji saving Momo on Onigashima.

I suppose it's possible that like Cavendish, Mihawk was once apart of royalty, but got detached from it for one reason or another, because of how he took up residence at the castle that used to be part of a kingdom. It could be that him taking up residence there wasn't just some random whim, but possibly him having a sort of remembrance from his past or something along those lines that made him fond of the castle enough to take up residence there, even if he didn't have anyone to go back to in his past otherwise.

Unsure if you pointed out Cavendish with bigger ideas in mind but there are particular similarities that I think point to Mihawk and he being from the same kingdom: - Both have a similar gothic royalty aesthetic, though in color they are tonally opposite - Both are skilled swordsmen - When in Hakuba state, Cavendish, Mihawk, AND I’m share the same eye shape Aside from being either from the same kingdom or otherwise related, i haven’t thought of why this connection could matter unless they are both a clue to Im’s eyes.

Hands down my favorite channel for One Piece at the moment. There’s not that many that talk about the series in this way in such detail. Mr. Morj, Ohara, and the occasional video from Craftsdwarf on it were probably the best for a while, but I’d say you’re very quickly matching the quality of their best stuff. So I’ll definitely be hitting that bell for alerts on whatever you put out in the future. Seriously thanks for the content. Also I recently read something you said in a reply about Thriller Bark being an underrated arc in retrospect. I completely agree. For years “isolated” adventure arcs were some of my favorites but the fan base were too often dismissive of them as filler. Thankfully my favorite arc Skypiea (plus Jaya) has gotten a lot more love but Thriller Bark still doesn’t seem to get that kind of recognition. If you ever considered making a video covering the value of a specific arc, it would be interesting to see you tackle that one and possibly change its reputation in the wider community.

You don't make a video just to make one and put one out, they all have great structure and arguments with every possible question brought up for defense of said topic and direction of the video. I could totally see this as true. Or in fact they grew up or were great rivals together for years and mihawk ended up losing his crew over a tragic thing or disbanded if he ever had one and they were always Freinds of their era and time ruling the seas. Love it. The second half of the video i think is super-strong, especially the parallel between crew members. I think the first argument for the Shanks/Mihawk relationship is a bit weak, i feel how they interact is already sufficiently explained by them just being long-time rivals, like, say, Luffy/Law or Luffy/Kidd. So then the argument might be that he wasn't originally with Shanks's crew but was only set up to join them at the end to finally complete the parallel between members. But then i think that'd be kind of strange from a writing perspective, for Oda to set up all these parallels, for a crew dynamic (on Shanks's side) that gets newly formed at Elbaf. Oh, and you didn't state it, but i assume you meant to show it, but visually there are parallels with the Nami/Lucky Roo stripes design. And they even have that same shade of green.

Great video. Just what I needed for my One Piece itch. What do you think about us seeing both Mihawk and Shanks during Roger's execution? I don't remember if Shanks had his crew with him. Maybe that's when Mihawk and Shanks met and formed their crew? But I also vaguely remember something about Mihawk already being famous during Roger's era. Thanks! From what I can tell Shanks was still a kid at the time of the execution while Mihawk was a young adult. There is a considerable age difference between the two, but that being said Benn Beckman is also like 10 years older than the rest of the crew. I can't remember if Mihawk was said to have been famous during Roger's era - but even if that were the case it wouldn't be crazy for him to join another crew at some point. Jinbei was also very famous before joining the Straw Hats. Would be cool to know the circumstances though. Thanks for watching!

My theory is that Mihawk, Imu, and Zuneisha all have the Immortality Surgery and that's what the ringed eyes meant. Mihawk's first ever mention in the series is them referring to him as Hawkeye, and Mihawk's first actual appearance is marked by Gin specifically talking about his terrifying, hawk-like eyes. And with both Imu and Zuneisha, them having their eyes shown for the first time is treated as a reveal. As if the fact they have those eyes is significant and meant to tell us something. We see them for multiple chapters with their eyes hidden, before their eyes are slowly revealed in a close up, and shortly after the story moves on from them. Even if the Immortality thing is wrong, I think it's clear the ringed eyes have some significance and aren't just a design quirk. Oda wants us to pay attention to them. So what's the common denominator between these 3? We know Zuneisha has been walking for 1000 years, and that if anyone was immortal, it would be the secret evil ruler of the whole world, Imu. And then Mihawk, it would explain the seemingly random vampire theme he has going on. He resides in an old castle, he drinks wine, he has a huge cross on his back and one around his neck, has a coffin shaped boat, and is named Dracule. If he was immortal, it'd certainly put meaning to all that. The huge flaw in this theory is that Mihawk was shown to have the ringed eyes in Gold Roger's execution, while Hess visibly aged at a rate you'd expect for the amount of time that's passed. However, the rest of it works so well, that I'm genuinely just gonna chalk it up to Oda making a design mistake. Oda has drawn Luffy's scar on Zoro, Luffy's scar itself always changes, Blackbeard's teeth, etc. Mangakas are worked really hard and are often sleep deprived and it's ultimately one meaningless panel. And hey, maybe we just don't know how the Immortality surgery works, maybe you're reborn like a phoenix each time or something. My previous theory for why he didn't have a crew was because either he lost them due to them all aging, or him just realising forming human connections is pointless if he is immortal and he will outlive them all anyway. But your theory makes more sense. The thing is both these theories could still be true. There's also the fact that Mihawk lives in such an old and decrepit place, that looks like it hasn't been inhabited for ages, so it's weird that this 40-something year old would seemingly have an emotional connection to it.

God we need more channels like this, these are the theories I actually live for. If we go by the Elbaf = Shanks arc theory, with Mihawk on the run from the marines, it would be so fitting for him to be in Elbaf along with the Red Haired Pirates. It'll be a checkpoint for the crew right before they find the One Piece: Luffy and Shanks, Zoro and Mihawk, Usopp and Yasopp, Nami and Beckman, I guess Sanji and Lucky Roo (?), it's just a perfect opportunity and it makes sense from all the foreshadowing and writing surrounding Mihawk and the Red Haired Pirates for it to coalesce into that perfect meeting in a future arc. Also I hope Buggy is there since he's Shanks' BFF too, it'll be fun.

I really like the idea of the World Government reaching out to Shanks to become a warlord. In which he is open to communication and working with them, but not to be their dog. Playing into your theory, that is Mihawks last straw as first mate. For Mihawk, Shanks has no aspiration to be Pirate King and now turns down the ultimate "get out of jail free card." Setting up the one man crew, Mihawk, as the only Red Hair pirate to accept the offer of warlord while keeping future Yonko Red Hair on speaking terms with the World Government/Navy.

What an amazing take on this! Although, I'm a firm believer that Shanks and his crew will get anahilated by Blackbeard's crew.. Shanks is an Itachi/Snape type of character.. at the end of the day they are the good guys. A fight between Akagami pirates and Mugiwara pirates doesn't work unless its a Davy back fight or shanks is evil all along. There needs to be a prompt to action for Luffy to go against Blackbeard.. and it needs a sense of motivation and vengeance to propel the story onwards

What if Mihawk was the captain of his own crew and had ambition similar to Zoro that he wanted to be the greatest swordsman but his entire crew died. That would be really interesting and would explain why he flies solo so he doesn’t get close to anyone else. Maybe he has a similar power to cavendish where another entity awakens and that’s why his crew died… because of him. Just my theory but it would be interesting.

Both timelines would make sense (whether to a certain/full extent) with the only difference being 1 suffering some minor inconsistency in terms of logic within the narrative events of the story like the late sudden of realization (this implies Mihawk being somewhat 'dumb' or slow in his thinking process which would be highly illogical based on his entire portrayal so far in the story, as it would have already been made obvious right from the get-go that joining the crew would not have allowed them to duels if such morality was to be applied between crewmembers) and the fact that Mihawk is already infamous while Shanks was just a little kid would imply that if Mihawk was to be recruited by him, he would have been stronger than his captain logically. And it would be weird if they only start dueling after Mihawk supposedly leaves the crew rather than fight in the early meetings.

If this is the case, if Mihawk rejoins the Red Hair Pirates, will he truly fight Zoro? I think the SHs and RHS will do a Davy back fight - it would be weird for Zoro v Mihawk to be the only actual tense duel. Plus it would be too early for Zoro to be strongest by Elbaf. I’m convinced Shanks vs Blackbeard is bound to happen (presumably then, shanks and his crew lose). This means that if Mihawk rejoins, he would lose to Shiryu. When Luffy and co defeat BB, Zoro must defeat Shiryu to claim titles of WSS.

Ironically Zoro said he would leave the crew if the captain wavered, what if that paralel happened with Mihawk and Shanks but Mihawk actually leaves cause Shanks was to casual how funny i wrote this before the end lol
