Mika Häkkinen's strange feedback technique

I think it was Adrian Newey who said in some interview that mechanics couldn't understand Mikas feedback after driving. So he ended up just talking and talking with him after races and testing and finally understood that actually he gave very detailed descriptions of what's wrong with the car and how it feels in certain places etc. He just described it so differently than others that it took a while to understand. But when they finally understood him, it actually helped a lot with bettering the car.

It takes that amount of talent to beat the greatest F1 pilot of all-time....twice. But Ayrton still has more championships to his name. It comes to show just how crucial communication/feedback to your team really is. Mika is one of my favorite F1 pilots ever. One of the cleanest drivers ever, along with some of the best race craft.

It is hard to hear I can relate being a big Ayrton Senna fan as well as a Mika Hakkinen fan. There was that one time he out qualified Ayrton in Estoril '93. Mika in his prime was very very quick to witness over a one lap qualifying. A good example is Imola 2000. Michael Schumacher had a tough time competing with Mika when McLaren became strong contenders again 1997-2001. I will agree though that Mika's raw pace over qualifying would be up there with Ayrton's pace over a lap. As conflicting as that is Mika had phenomenal raw speed.

@@racr2687Mika was seriously quick but overall I’d say Michael had more natural talent. Suzuka 2000 is a perfect example of it. Schumi pipped Mika by just 9 thousandths and both drivers absolutely nailed their laps with no mistakes. Australia 2000 is another example where Michael was on target to beat Mika’s time, only for Coulthard to crash bringing out the red flag so Schumi had to abort his lap which would have likely put him in pole position.

Indeed, what does a former F3 team owner who was the team principal of both a young Hakkinen and a young Senna know. It's not like it was his job to develop and manage his drivers or anything, why should we trust his word over the word of some random idiot on KZbin.
