Funny, we adopted a white German Shepherd after our other Akita died, then got a another female Akita. She looks the same. She is a Mariah Akita from Indianapolis. Yours is so cute. I said I'd never get another Akita after this one because I love her so much that she could never be replaced. The best dog training book is Brenda Alloff's book Dogs with Agression.

Over these past few years, I have noticed that Mika, as an Akita, doesn't really do the best with other dogs (or even other animals) but for some reason she seems to at least tolerate the German Shepherds she has encountered. Possibly because of their evolutionary relationship? Not sure. I'll be sure to check out Alloff's book! Thanks for sharing Christina!

@@mewchu I can not speak for the breed as a whole but I can tell you that Mika does not get along well with other dogs. I assume it is the protective nature in her. She is very protective of me and my family so anything that she sees as a threat she is ready to approach. I have seen other Akitas who are trained out of this or who don't possess this quality so I know there are "dog-friendly" Akitas.

Your Akita, Mika, is absolutely beautiful! I had an Akita for 15 years and she was absolutely the best friend that I could ever have had! Koda, my Akita's name, brought joy to our family each and every day of her life! She was just a wonderful friend, caring and loving family member who I still miss to this day! Your Mika reminds me of Koda in her temperament and body language so I am sure you two are going to have a caring, loving and wonderful member of your family for many, many more years to come! I hope you continue to post videos of Mika as I would like to know how she is doing in the future. We always end up with a new Akita puppy to help the one left behind to heal and it always seems to help us thru our sorrow as well. A beautiful breed. We have an akita ourselves; a beautiful boy named Bounty. He's anxious towards other dogs and strangers, and he generally keeps to himself around the house, but he's part of the family. I'm a bit worried for him though...He's turning 9 in a few months, and while the breed can live for a decently long time by dog standards, he's also prone to seizures, so I worry that one day he'll have a seizure and his heart won't be able to take it... I know that loss is expected, especially among species with shorter lifespans than our own, but it still makes me sad to think that one day Bounty won't be around anymore...

American Akitas were not bred in US despite their name, here's the short story. During the WWII, the Japanese military government prohibited people from having dogs except the ones potentially be used for military duties, so the German Shepherd mix was allowed. Many Akita and GS mixed breed were produced. At the end of the war, the US GIs looked for Akita, in big part because of Helen Keller's effort to popularize the breed, she spoke out loud every opportunities she got how much she loved her Akita. She owned many dogs of different kinds because of her blindness, any dog would have helped. The problem was that the GIs didn't know what Akita looks like nor did they even care. They picked up the mixed breed happily because they were bigger and more available than Japanese pure bred Akitas. By looking at the photos, the dogs Helen Keller had(she had two in sequence, one had died prematurely) weren't even pure breed Akitas either(but they seemed to have the same personality of Akita). That resulted in far more of Mixed breed Akitas(black masked Akita) in US than pure bred Japanese Akitas. That's the reason why people start calling them American Akita, even though the breed wasn't created in US.

Mika ("美香" in Japanese) means beautiful (or so the internet told us) and once we said the name outloud a few times it sort of stuck. We love it! My family and I have Native American heritage and so Mika's entire name is "Soqua Mika". Soqua, in the Cherokee language, means "1" which we gave her because she was our first Akita! Since then, we have acquired "Obi", our little boy Akita. A video dedicated to him is soon to come!

I will admit: With previous pets, I have never been a "pro" in potty training. Mika was the easiest dog I have ever potty trained. She was always quite a low maintenance puppy. (For the first couple of weeks we were starting to think she might be deaf and/or dumb because of the lack of noise she made!) Mika made potty training a breeze for us. It was very early on that she became smart enough to catch onto standing at the door when she needed to go. She was not very energetic as a puppy so when she was up and around we assumed that meant it was time. All of that being said, I was able to be home with her a majority of the day and she was rarely left home alone. I realize that might not be possible for some dog owners. I'm not sure if it was Mika's breed or just her personality, but she was relatively easy to potty train in my opinion! Thanks for asking! (:

I don't know much about dogs but in 30 year of my life I had only one dog at the age of 15 and he lived with me 5 years ....and that was an akita or haskita I am not confirmed about it ... after his death in age of 6 just he left his tearful memories for me.... I don't think i would be able to have another dog in my life .... he was first and I think will be last ❤👈 .... Akitas are best ❤✌

We’ve had Akita’s for 25 years. Your girl is beautiful. May I ask where u got her. Our girl is now 11.

Thank you so much. They are such an amazing breed. The owner was an AKC registered breeder I located through the AKC puppy finder website!😊

I really want an Akita but people told me to never get one if you have cats. I have 2 cats but when I see people with their Akita being friendly to their cats I get confused. Are they okay with cats or not?

Depends on how you train them and is it an Akita or an American akita
@madelinemann38182 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, just about any dog breed may be trained to tolerate the company of other animals. I have also heard, though, that Akitas inherently prefer to be alone with their humans! Mika had no other choice but to share a home with our indoor/outdoor cat Tommy.😁

Awww so beautiful! My Akita looks like Mika, but she has what I call Angel wings on her shoulders. Its tan and grey over her black coat. Kassiopeia was born April 12, 2019. This is my 2nd akita. My 1st akita was a Japanese Akita. Takkira was a great dog too!

I love the Japanese Akita’s as well! I have yet to meet one in person, but from what I can tell they are very beautiful dogs. I’ve heard they have similar personalities to American Akita’s as well!
@fingersinyourass95273 жыл бұрын
You mixed the two the American one is the one supposed to call an American akita instead of an Akita only since the one from Japan is the original don't call it a Japanese akita call it an Akita only and the American one as an American akita since they aren't the original ones and are mixed with German shepherds

Hehehe. I have a Pitbull/Akita mix named Boris, he's very sweet and dopey. Has the big blocky Pitbull head/short coat/straight tail, but his face is totally Akita and he has a giant broad chest and big body.

Absolutely adorable 🐕 I would love to have a puppy, but there way to expensive. And I don't expect there are many that need rescued 😂
@madelinemann38184 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, they are definitely a financial investment. One day maybe? Thanks for your sweet comment!

They appear on the rescue boards every now and then. People having to down size, realizing they bit off more than they can chew, or homeowners insurance threatening cancelation. Or of course behavior issues due to lack of training. Check the various rescues online. A fantastic breed! If trained well.

There are plenty that need to be rescued and à bunch of rescues through out the country.
