I look at it this way. The men had decided that they were going to start a revolution. He was simply reminding Marius that they very likely were going to die and to fall in love right now would cloud his judgment and also leave the one he was falling in love to mourn his death. So it wasn't that he really didn't care. In a way, he was trying to protect him.
