A little too late to the party but i watched this movie with my boyfriend and my dwarf cat who had been sick for a while on a Wednesday night and the next day on Thursday she [the cat] suddenly passed away. It was such an eerie synchronicity that I often think about. Wonderful movie and performance by Nicolas Cage. Miss my cat so much.

SPOILER: I think there's a lot of subtext in the underground fight scene. I don't think it's exclusively about fighting - I figured people pay to beat you the eff up, especially those with grudges againt you, and in return you get cash or whatever. I figured the guy who shelled out all that money to beat Robin was an ex-employee of his who hated his guts, hinted at with the knowing glance between them. The restaurant world can be brutal, uncompromising. Robin was a part of that and probably incredibly unrelenting to some of his staf. It was never meant to be a fight. It was an exchange.

You nailed it. It is not a fight club. It is a beat the shit out of someone you hate club. Head chefs are notorious assholes. So this appears to be a place where they can make a ton of money by letting someone kick their ass (I also assume it could be any number of people in the industry, but head chefs would bring in the big bucks). We later see snippets where Rob is revealed to be a real asshole in the past. He fires the one guy after 2 months for overcooking pasta. His wife/girlfriend talks about how she always has to get drunk when they go to a fancy restaurant because he will complain about the food. He was kind of a dick in his past life, and we see this as his past is unfurled. We also know it's not a fight club because his hands are behind his back. Overall I do agree with Mike it was the one scene that felt a bit out of place. It was interesting, it provided information that moved the plot forward, and it also gave us some insight into how popular he was while also someone that was hated. Yet it did feel a bit weird overall. Don't get me wrong, this is a very, very minor nitpick in a movie I love. Yet it did give me a pause of "well that was kind of weird."

Yeah, I didn't think it was a fight club either. That's why I loved the scene - it's the exact opposite of a typical revenge-movie fight scene. Instead of beating people up, the protagonist exclusively gets punched by a guy two feet shorter than him. Amazing.

Left your mind with a lot of questions and kind of takes you out of the flow of the movie. I didn't dislike it but felt it could have been done better. I used to be roommates with a chef. he had a lot of stories about being a vicious asshole, people losing their shit, and the strain of the high stress job. So, I can totally see a group like this forming in the food prep world.

It would be hard to isolate a single thing in the film and call it the best/most important part- it's very balanced and cohesive, like a fine dish.

Alex Wolff was nice to me on set of Patriots Day. I was an extra and he kept walking by me and tapping me on the shoulder to let me know he's coming by. We talked briefly and at the time I never saw him in any other movies. Then he starred in Hereditary and ever since he's been a great actor. It's also great to see Nicolas Cage in a movie that everyone is praising his performance and not laughing at him.

We all asked the movie executives if we could get a picture with Nic but he was only there for 2 days :( I was gonna see it regardless for obvious reasons but it's good to hear the movie is a good watch. I used to work at Oxbow Park, where they shot some of Twilight 1. All summer we had "Twi-hards" coming to the park from all over to see where the scene was shot (their first kiss). They were really annoying all summer. At the end of the summer me and some of my work friends went for a camping trip up to the Olympic national peninsula and it turned out the weekend we chose was Belle's (the female lead) fictional birthday and their was a big "Twi-hard" convention up their because the town Fork is in the peninsula and they all flocked their for that weekend. We couldn't get away from them! Anyways what park do you work at? I want to come with my fellow Pig-heads to see the locations and take pictures dressed in Pig cosplay outfits... jk!

As a portlander i feel like Nick Cage's character in this movie needs to be locally canonized. There's something so incredibly resonant about his performance (he's almost more like a set piece than a character, let alone a protagonist). I feel like Robin Feld captures that combination of awe-inspiring natural beauty, and the sense of loss that just keeps building over one's lifetime. not to mention resentment for snobby Portland culture.

Alex Wolff really took the role of a young vulnerable man trying to fit into a world dominated by “the invincible father”, in a honest way. He did it well, and I had lots of compassion for his character. Underrated performance, great job. Haven’t seen a movie I actually thought about after watching, in a very long while. Valley Girl will always be my favorite Nicolas Cage movie though 😂💕 I believe it was French toast not pancakes 🥞 there is not a French toast emoji and I’m upset 😢 🤷🏻🇫🇷🍞

I saw this a couple of days ago and really liked it. While slow moving it never felt like it dragged. The amount of restraint the movie had was very impressive. I’ve also worked as a chef for 25 years and walked away from it so it felt sincere. The weird under belly of the chef world wasn’t too far off the mark actually.

This couldn't have worked with anyone other than Cage, he brings the expectation that he is 1 second from snapping and going full "Cage" at any moment, the audience is constantly anticipating this and at times actively willing it as he is in situations that seem to justify even a "normal" person losing it a little, so for Cage of all people to not give into this is what sells the whole thing.

The "If this was a guy and his aligator" thing got me thinking: My cousin has a snake (a boa) that's fucking in love with him. It's crazy to see just how this thing interacts with him. It gives him hugs, like not contrictions, gentle-ass hugs.Like it curls up on his lap and uses its bottom muscles to gently latch onto his leg. It rubs its face on his face like a cat that's marking its owner. It gets jealous of other people being around him. It's amazing to just watch. Show me that in a movie. Never seen that shit before.

I love that there are all these wait staff and line cooks that pay money to take out their frustration, if you work in food and bev l, this idea really works. Not that I’m advocating this irl but it totally fits the narrative critique on the restaurant industry. As we find out later in the movie, Nicholas cage would fire his staff for minor issues, so looking back on this scene it implies that many of the wait staff may know him and have personal vendettas against him. loved this movie
