So funny you would say the vocals are also reminiscent of Phil’s singing. When first I heard “Silent Running” and didn’t recognize Paul Carrick, I mistook it for one of Phil’s solo tunes. (I was just five years old when Mike + the Mechanics debuted.)

@@Shred_The_Weapon No, there were originally four lead singers on the first album. It didn't become the two Pauls until the second album. This album had a singer named John Kirby doing leads on "Par Avion" and "You Are the One". The other lead singer is Gene Stashuck who is doing leads on this song. Not Paul Carrack.

@@Shred_The_Weapon No, it's Gene Stashuk! Mike Rutherford has said so himself. If you listen closely you can tell that it's NOT Paul Carrack. Paul only sings certain parts. As does some female vocalist.

Well, it *was* going to be a Genesis song, and Phil Collins (and Tony Banks) took part in writing this song, but of all of Genesis, only Mike Rutherford liked it, period ("full stop" in the members' origin), so the rest of the group allowed him to use it for *this* group.

Awesome song. I would love to pick Mike Rutherford's brain as to what he was thinking when he wrote this. It's not at all commercial, but it's arguably the best song on the CD.

The song was written by Genesis but, they never recorded it, when he asked to use it he had to call it "That (or The) song" it hadn't been titled and I agree while the whole album is awesome this is by far the best track. (from an interview, I don't recall the source)

Abraham Jefferson Three years + later.... Abraham, you echo my thoughts perfectly, and now in addition to picking Mike’s brain I’d like to pick yours also (on the now-seriously dim chance you might ever read this). I feel the same about “Silent Running.” I have my own thoughts, of course, as you obviously do as well. I think there’s some serious conflict coming our way as the Left and Right are being pitted against each other. Thanks for your comment.

"A Call to Arms" began as an unfinished "bit" from the Genesis album sessions which none of the members liked, aside from Rutherford. Rutherford received permission from Genesis bandmates Phil Collins and Tony Banks to use it for the Mechanics, then developed it into a full song with help from Christopher Neil and B.A. Robertson.

Pass the word, it's a call to arms Midnight man at your door Blackened faces run in the night Daybreak under the floor Bring my bow Fill my head with flame, and we must Let them know that the torch is lit again Crystalize the pain behind your eyes Are you ready to fight? (You hear the drum and) run for your life (Sweet Avalon the heat is on) In other words, I hope and pray That time and tide wash the hate away A simple man with simple thoughts Who turned to force as a last resort All around us, chaos rings Buildings crumbling down Silhouettes in the fiery rain Timbers crash to the ground Bring my spear, invested with my youth Bring the children near, they must now be told the truth Old and young and those of foreign tongue Are you ready to fight? (You hear the drum and) run for your life (Sweet Avalon the heat is on) In other words, I hope and pray That time and tide wash the hate away A simple man with simple thoughts Who turned to force as a last resort In other words, I hope and pray That time and tide keep the day away When simple men with simple thoughts Will turn to force as a last recourse

The day before yesterday I found out that Mr. John Kirby was the lead singer for the one-hit (one-album) band called Wavelength. After listening to the title track (haven't listened to the full album) and both "Par Avion" and "You Are the One" I wonder why he never also sang for the Alan Parsons Project? He seems like the type Alan would've wanted to use on a song or two or more...

Several years ago I heard this song. It has been with me since then. Now..America is in its darkest hour. Many have said a movie should be made with these lyrics in mind. I thought that also and am in the beginning of writing a novel that centers around the collapse of the Republic. I will not discuss the concepts involved but it will be entitled THE PANOPTICON. If the moral values this country WAS FOUNDED on are not preserved then the Republic is lost. Today, in our government we have a deep state that is out to destroy it and no amount of elected individuals will stop it. It is up to US to do so once again. THAT is the heritage we have instilled in us from our forefathers. All this WOKE philosophy, which is racism itself, the idea that communism will solve the ills of America, these unwise and truly anti-intellectual Generation X mentality of whatever one feels is adequate logic is horse shyt. THESE people and philosophies are at the root of the destruction of family which God instituted and seek to eliminate it by perversion and HATRED against anyone who loves the principles that founded this country. THEY ARE THE ENEMY spoken about in this song. WE must fight them to the death if necessary for our children's sake and Gods.

Not so clear who the first lead vocalist is on this fantastic song. It is not Carrack, who does the second lead vocal. It is not Kirby, who sings the sublime Par Avion and You are the one. It is definitely not Paul Young. I can only assume it is 'Gene Stashuck'? I like this album, as it has so many lead vocalists, and is not just Carrack, then Young, as in other releases. *Dave Moishe* ...And that's what makes this album so uniquely outstanding. The multiplicity of lead vocalists. And every one of them First Class talent. In all of 20th Century Pop/ Rock history, I know nothing like it. Since it's Mike R's band, it's as though he wanted Mike & the Mechanics to be as unlike Genesis as possible, in the sense that, from the 80's onward it was only Phil Collins that sang lead Maybe Genesis' other gents just didn't want to go against the will of Hugh Pagdham, or else risk spoiling a proven formula that was succeeding so enormously well for them, as long as Phil was pointman? :/
