I think what he's meaning is the fact that his voice just doesn't have the richness and fullness of most of the professional singers who make it on Broadway. But he can definitely carry a tune, be on pitch, use emotion and performing etiquette, be comfortable and look comfortable on stage, remember all the lyrics, etc., plus he's a very skilled dancer, so all his other skills make up for the fact that the voice he has just isn't the same kind of instrument as Ben Platt or others have naturally.

So I was listening to Sincerely, Me And I've never actually seen him sing Sincerely, Me but I've heard him talk and he's obviously a little monotone and after hearing him talk it just wasn't the voice I was expecting.
