Agree Lynch is a national treasure, and it is almost a shame he is wasted as a football coach. However, he should refrain from lobbying for the method for picking the "national champion" college football team. His method would compromise the division championships, destroy traditional rivalries and upend the bowl system and all they accomplish at the local level. The present system insures the top four teams meet at the end of the season, and builds interest and passion for the playoffs.

@Jaems_Scott5 жыл бұрын
Actually; the plan has always been to expand the payoffs to 8 games. They just wanted to get people use to a tournament format; then use the media to push the Group of 5 conferences out of the picture. Notice how the media harped on Boise State never getting the chance to play for a Championship. They also used Utah when they went undefeated before the Pac-12 expansion. They used TCU before the Big XII expansion. They used Hawaii when they went undefeated [before getting embarrassed by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl] ... They went on & on about how a playoff would give these teams an opportunity that the BCS never gave them. But then espn signed the exclusive rights to the playoff, and haven't given 1 moment of respect to any non Power5 program. All you hear from them now, is, "Well, it's because their schedule doesn't measure up. But if they keep playing well, they'll get a New Year's Six Bowl." Which is exactly what they use to tell us wasn't enough for these schools. It has always been about money, No Doubt. But the playoffs for espn was about getting exclusive rights for the Championship game. --- They used the smaller schools to get people all hopping mad about fairness, then changed the rhetoric once they got what They wanted. Now, they Power5 is just waiting until people get use to the idea of the Group of 5 not being qualified to play in the tournament, due to the lack of Schedule Strength, because the Power5 programs are refusing to play them frequently enough. What they want, is to expand the playoffs without the Group of 5, pushing the smaller conferences into their own division, so that the Money Schools [those who generate the most TV Revenue] will have exclusivity through Auto Bid for being a Power5 Champion with a couple of At Large Bids to fill the bracket. [which would allow Notre Dame and/or a second team from one Power5 Conference or another]

This is a great strategy by Mike Leach, when proposing for a change in anything in life, the best way to go about it is to ‘bite off more than you can chew’. @TheHamsterfist7 жыл бұрын
At this point it is 100% idiotic that the NCAA hasn't at least figured out a 16 team playoff. I disagree with 64 teams, and personally feel like 32 is the sweet spot, at least as far as real competitive games go. The chances that the 64th best team is upsetting the 1st best team seems pretty unlikely. 32 though? Well, maybe.... I bet we see 8 in the next 5 years.

@prominentsinglesinternatio41686 жыл бұрын
I think 16 is a sweet spot and there's no way a conference champion should be left out of any playoff system... You could n Make 6 work if you knew what you were doing you automatically take the 5 power conference champs and throw in one at large to who the rankings have ranked highest who didn't make the playoffs also your 1 and 2 highestbranks could get a bye like the NFL and be rewarded one home game during all this as a perk and have the final Championship game played in an indoor stadium The sweet thing is because you would need to figure out who your 6th team to get in is and who are your top 1 & 2 ranked teams to get a bye and home field advantage This would allow you to keep the rankings in the regular season..which is what brings in t.v. ratings and keeps college football relevant during regular season or else it be like college basketball and nobody would watch anybody play but there home team until the playoffs..Im in favor of 16 or 32 wouldn't go higher there's just not and teams worth watching after rank 32..but personally if I had my choice is do it my way When the Conference Championship Games start that's really when the playoffs would start all too 5 Conference Champions would advance. And you would throw in the highest rank team that didn't with the Conference Championship could be any team even if they didn't play in the Conference Championship game.. To fill in the 6 spot so now you have 6 teams using both Rankings and Conference Champions Then you continue using rankings to determine who are your 1 & 2 seeds and you adopt the NFL approach giving 1 & 2 a bye week with home field advantage..There you go!

@justinturley70713 жыл бұрын
Thank you. In Division 1 College Football there are 10 conferences, let all 10 conference winners in, 5 on one side, 5 on the other, then 6 wild cards, 3 on each side, that way everyone gets a fair chance. Do away from the rankings and go strictly by record. 3 rounds. 8 plays 2, 6 plays 3, 5 plays 4, 2nd round, (for example), 1 plays the lowest remaining seed, bring 3-8, if 2 wins they play the highest remaining seed, 3-7. The 3rd round then has the last 4 remaining seeds to go to the National Championship. Then and only then, we get to the National Championship, 2 of the best of the best play, let's say, and 8th seed wins it all, all on the road, they play, let's say, a 3rd seed, they've had to play 1 home game and 2 road games to get there, and winner gets the National Championship. Also, no bowl games when they change to that format.

An eight team playoff would be a lot of fun. Then the number nine and ten team, and their fans, would complain about expanding to twelve or sixteen team playoff. It’s hard to please people. Also, there would be two possibly three Sec teams in the playoff every year if expanded, which would upset all the Sec haters. Personally, I love watching Alabama compete for a natty every year. If everyone is tired of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and teams of their prestige that are contenders year in and year out then teams need to force them into two losses on the year. That would for sure eliminate them, at least three of them, for sure.
@johnlee73776 жыл бұрын
Caleb Pennington If you’re #9 or #10, you’ve probably lost at least a game or two or scheduled no ranked games, and have no right to complain. A 4 playoff system sucks cause if you’re number 5, you could lose none, or lose 1 really good game, win many difficult ranked games, and be at the mercy of the committee. It leaves too much power in the hands of so called “experts”
@beastofalbeasts16 жыл бұрын
Caleb - The problem with your logic is that there isn't too much opportunity for these teams to get knocked down. With current format top teams are encouraged to stuff their schedule with fluff games so they don't have to risk that out of conference loss. For example: SEC only plays 8 regular season conference games with others at 9. 1/3 of their schedule is mostly fluff teams with some decent games. 16 team playoff opens up the opportunity for a team to knock them down as the competition would be arguably better.

I am more in favor of a 8 team playoff. That would probably eliminate most of the controversy. But the one thing that I believe should be mandatory: if you go unbeaten, you're in. Period. I don't care if it's Bowling Green from the MAC. To go unbeaten in college football is such a rare happenstance that I think you must reward teams who do it. My only worry is that a team like Alabama might schedule three non-league cupcakes, but even there I don't feel Nick Saban would do it because at some point he has to prepare his team for the SEC. If we had multiple teams from the smaller leagues going unbeaten every year I would be against this idea. But it just doesn't happen. We're lucky if we see one.

XxDoom_NinjaxX 1000 That would be great. That’s all the G5 have ever wanted. Since 2008 Utah G5 teams have gone undefeated yet not been given the chance to play for a championship, because of their perceived strength (which considering their 7-3 record in major bowls over P5 is really stupid).

UCF doesn't want to play Alabama! They know they would lose! They just want to be able to say they want to play Alabama and complain about how unfair it is in order to keep up the hype and make money. Not a bad philosophy when you think about it.
@brian24406 жыл бұрын
6whitefeather “make money” Are you serious? Since 2004 there have been 12 undefeated Group of 5 teams that never played in a championship. Those championship games are worth over $4 million per game. Now that’s just for the college. For the conference payout the Group of 5 is extremely disproportionately paid less compared to every other Power 5 conference. Per BCS appearance each power 5 conference is paid out $22 million with an additional $6 million for every team added to the BCS games. For the G5 $12 million is paid for 52 teams which comes out to $231,000 per program compared to the average $1.8 million paid for P5 teams. That’s the BCS, which G5 teams weren’t even eligible to compete for BCS until 2004 despite having 3 undefeated teams prior. For the CFP Major Bowls games the Cotton, Orange And Rose Bowl payout is $28 million per team- G5 teams can never qualify for these bowls as they are contractual with ONLY Power 5 conferences. Only 1 bowl has a contract for a single G5 team, which pays out $80 million for the whole conference (52 teams) and $4 million for the single team. What on earth are you talking about???? From 2004 to 2014 the G5 should be owed at least $176 million for the 8 undefeated teams with considerable wins that did not receive equal compensation to that of Power 5 teams for their involvement in a championship (This list isn’t including Northern Illinois). From 2014-2017 at the very least the G5 deserves an additional $82 million for UCF’s inclusion in the playoff, but I would also argue the case for 2015 Houston, and an additional $2.2 million for 2016 WMU ($2.2 million is the difference between $28 million spread over 12 teams in a Power 5 compared to the $12 million spread across 52 teams in the Group of 5). That comes out to roughly $260 million owed to the G5.

Do we really want a world where Northwestern is currently one win away from a college football playoff spot? That's the problem with the conference champions getting an automatic berth. @jeromes51836 жыл бұрын
David f ok... so some teams evolve, some teams don’t? Some teams go up and down? Dude it’s really simple. 16 teams takes ALL DOUBT out of the championship, makes it MORE EXCITING FOR THE FANS AND PLAYERS of the schools involved, EXTENDS THE SEASON SO WE GET MORE meaningful games, can still preserve the bowl system, make everyone a shitload of money, and maybe, just maybe, give is the occasional Cinderella or magical championship run from a number 6 or number 9. Maybe once in a hundred years you get a 15 making it all the way and everyone’s talking about it. And think of the matchups! Right now it would be Texas vs OSU, OU vs Florida, Georgia vs West Virginia and Norte Dame vs Washington State! Mike Leech’s very own! Lol if that argument isn’t compelling enough for you, I say you are not a college football fan. Anything can happen in one game, ESPECIALLY in college. And the added pressure and meaning of a playoff game? Maaaannnnnn anyone who doesn’t want a 16 team playoff just isn’t seeing it right. Even the number two vs number 16 (Clemson/penn state) would be fun. If I was really really pushed, I’d say the number 1 and 2 teams could have a bi-week and make it 14 teams, but even that to me feels like we’d be missing something.

It doesn't need to be expanded beyond four. There us such a thing as diminishing returns. All that needs to be done is move the championship after January 1. Include four teams. Post BCS. I say BCS because I preferred that format over CFP. I think if four teams are included that would adequately address selection. In an appropriate manner. Priority obviously to undefeated teams. Possibly fill exclusion of teams with two losses although I might be open to including an Alavana. But assuming they are prohibited (two losses) there would most likely be an Appalachian St. If you understand trying to prioritize teams with exemplary schedules.

I see both sides of this. Having 4 teams makes all of the bowl games outside of the play off useless. Even the players are skipping fowl games now. Having to many teams will really lessen the playoff. The best teams in the country are generally 1 - 3 in the rankings there’s a big drop off on the .4th team. I can only imagine how much of a drop it would be if we expended the play off. I think eventually there’s not going to be a choice and they will expand due to the amount of money the bowl games could make bring a part of the playoff. I think the longer they keep these major bowls outside of the play off the more money they will loose. Taking everything into account I don’t think I would go past 8 teams, at least for now. I believe it should be a slow expansion.
