I just learned that all my years of exercising in my youth, a total of 15 years I was technically a power lifter. It was no wonder I didn't look big, but for my size I had decent strength. Favourite exercises were the 3 mentioned, deadlift being my all time favorite. I didn't have any mirrors in my dungeon, my focus to workout was to get raw power. I would claim to be a bodybuilder, I guess I was wrong. Respect to all the Iron horses out there making gains. I salute you!

He could be natural. All the contests he has tested for he has come back clean. He has also been training his entire life, hes 48 now. In your first year of bodybuilding you can expect to make about 8-10 lbs of lean muscle, in your second year about 5 lbs, and every consecutive year about 3 lbs of lean muscle max. So if Mike started at 16, at say 145 lbs, and consistently built his whole life, he would be at about 245-250 lbs lean. ((1year x 8lbs) + (1year * 5lbs) + (30years * 3lbs) = 105lbs total. And that is pretty much exactly what Mike is at so it is absolutely possible, but it takes a lifetime of training, and an injury can really set you back. Of course if you are using steroids you can amplify these gains, but natural is a slow process that few people have the discipline for. Also keep in mind that Mike is 6' 2" so his height will add a fair amount of weight also. Plus Mike is a powerbuilder, meaning he mixes powerlifting with bodybuilding. And most people know that powerlifting is a sure fire way to make huge gains, just look at Ronnie Coleman before he ever even started using steroids, he was huge. All things considered its certainly reasonable.
@jcdenton1347 жыл бұрын
lol okay well I don't even need to do research to know that is complete bullshit because I'm 210lbs and I started bodybuilding at 145 lbs and im natural. I'm about 13% bodyfat, so i've definitly got some fat on me, but ive been 13% mostly my whole life so obviously 40-50 lbs is bs and I'm still steadily growing, but at a slow pace.

dario dol You can't even tell the difference between a natural and steroid user when it's obvious. Mike O Hearn is natural (been drug tested - how the fuck else could he compete?). He only stands out because he works out harder, started earlier since his teens (when you looked like a pencil shithead), and watches what he eats. Oatmeal and clean eating all the time, unlike you, who goes out with friends and eats at shitty places and drink beer, laughing and wasting your time and not thinking about exercising. Mike O'Hearn is the physical representation of mental discipline over the years. He adheres to principles better than you. Your "steroid" accusation is the cliched response of a dumb shithead who doesn't know shit about real lifting/nutrition. Post your cutting diet. Or your mass gaining routine. I bet there's no fucking such thing in your pathetic life.
@dariodol9 жыл бұрын
EnzoTheBaker you know, i respect what u say, because when i was 20 i also believed in mr. olympia telling people they were all natural. Again it sounds like the man you accuse me to be is indead the man you are, and probably dont know anything about natural bodybuilding. I began training when i was 16 (now im 44) im 175 cm tall, my wrist is 17,5 cm. my weight is 86 kg, my fbm is 12-13%. Over the years i tried to push myself to the limits and once arrived to 92 kg (but my fbm was over 16%) and once i cut my fbm to 7% but my weight fell to 76 kg. i can now lift 195 kg x10 deadlift, 162 kg x8 squat, and 108 kg x10 bench press. What about you? My only supplements are creatine, bcaa, whey protein. I met many many natural bodybuilders, im graduated in sports activities. u know, it doesnt matter how long, how hard uve been training, or what u eat, there are genetical limits u cant surpass if ure natural. check this site for instance: www.thecalculator.co/health/Fat-Free-Mass-Index-(FFMI)-Calculator-794.html. I admire Mike for his dedication and i know he also has a superior strength, but saying hes natural its like saying all the best bodybuilders in the world could be natural. Again if hes really natural i would suggest him to take steroids, can you imagine? he would become the best, the biggest, the leanest and the richest bodybuilder in the history. why missing this opportunity? just because he wants to be clean, good guy and your friendly neighborhood hero? i dont believe in fairy tales

being natural is a not a difficult thing to do in bodybuilding these days , we have the knowledge , the equipment , the supplements ..etc but all of the sudden when some people see a guy not as huge as Mike , but has some serious size of muscle they always say .. he is not natural ... well if that's the case then what about the bodybuilders that were in the era when no supplements or steroids did exist . for instance check Eugen Sandow , he is the father of bodybuilding , he was strong and lean and has muscle mass like none before . so with today's knowledge ,research , tests in human development we can achieve this kind of physique with only hard work , if your not working really hard then you won't reach your goal , and you'll say whatever excuse there is just to not blame yourself in the first place for not giving everything you got . i respect both Mike and Rob for dedicating their time and effort , giving tons of information of their experience in many years of training for us and for that I'm grateful .

blasphemicwhale probs because he claims natural when he obvs is not. This is done sell their protein/workout programme but realistically his physique in unattainable without the use of steroids. Basically giving people false hope which isn’t very ethical.
@Bangercv10 жыл бұрын
Im not really bothered if Mike is on roids or not that's irrelevant, the dude trains hard, he knows what to do, knows what he is talking about and his video's are great. The guy is a former 4 or 5 time Mr Olympia people on here say he don't know what he is talking about, that is practically like turning up to a body-building speech that is done by Arnold or Lou and then walking out or saying to the next person he is a douche bag, he don't know what he is talking about? I mean come on get a grip #haters ! Second of all I'm not really an "Anti-roids" person, if Mike or anyone else in the world does it then good luck to them because without hating, steroids can increase strength and give great aesthetics when used appropriately. If someone is using them and looks good fair play to them, I really don't understand why people hate. Now if you want to even remotely look as good as someone like .... well not Mike but lets say Rob Riches then you can either do it through real real hard work, dedication and effort or step up to the plate and swing the bat (roids), but one thing that beginners don't get is that to put an actual decent amount of muscle on it can take a process of up to 2-3 years minimum not to mention basic thing's such as eating and the way you stand (posture) counts for 80% of what your body will look like!

Jamal Owens The problem with your comment is you fail to realize he is a fraud, he doesn't own up to who he is and how he got to where he is. It is blatantly obvious he takes steroids, NO ONE and I mean NO ONE looks like that naturally. A grown man's natural testosterone levels are somewhere between 300-900ng/dl, Mike is probably coming in somewhere around 2100 ng/dl and who knows what else he is taking. For the record, I love PED's, I think they make sports better but what I hate are frauds and Mike O'Hearn claiming Natty is an absolute joke. Anyone that believes he is natural and doesn't use Steroids/Testosterone/HGH/All of them is purely ignorant to the limits of the natural human body. He is a fake, a fraud and a complete douchebag for lying with a straight face about how "natural" he is.
@Bangercv9 жыл бұрын
I dont really care if he takes steroids or not that's between him and his God, but i know people who actually look as good as him naturally, guys who have been training 13 years + anyway more to the point, if these guy lie i dont really care, I like watching their videos, they've probably got more experience than a lot of guys combined on here and sometimes you can pick a few new things up simple as.
@SolicitorRandolph9 жыл бұрын
Jamal Owens I agree with you, these videos have some great information in them. I don't think you read what I wrote though. I am simply saying this guy is a fraud because he doesn't own what he does, he denies it emphatically. I think steroids are great for the right person, I see nothing wrong with them. This guy, takes them ,denies it and reaps the rewards from his lies. That's why he is a fraud.

This is probably one of the single best lessons i have learnt about training watching this video and this is coming from someone who has been around fitness for 2 decades. I never really got into powerlifting i have always been more of a S&C or traditional body building man. However i feel this philosophy pf training resting until you are personally ready before doing the next big set is something i am interested in. I have also trained under the philosophy one rest day after training so my training did not run over a 7 day static week. I simply trained a day resr a say train a day rest a day. I did this for 4 months and i have to say i got some amazing results. Rest days were always fillec with nice things like BBQ, seeing friend meditation low level yoga, walking it was a nice lifestyle whilst it lasted. I think im gonna love over to powerlifting.

@Cerdelimo6 жыл бұрын
Darkeith Lofton Number one is simply true, and also is number two for the same reason: the overwhelming flow of shit from the fake natties has got to a point where: A: Everyone is scared of posting photos of himself unless he uses steroids, because B: The afromentioned river of shit has created unachievable goals for natural gym-goers (I'm not even using the term bodybuilers since natural bodybuilding is a joke to me). So there you go, A + B equals an industry based on hypocrisy, scams and frauds.

low reps like 1 rep max will build better neuromuscular connections and will not build muscle the same way 8-12 reps will. You need time under tension if you wanna build the muscle fibers.

Its true deadlift engages your back, but not as close as rows might and deadlifts drain your energy. Useful for athletes, maybe not for bodybuilders. jusayin.
@b1zzler10 жыл бұрын
Ditch the power lifting program and find a bodybuilding program if you care about muscle mass. Heavy compound lifts are necessary, but not sufficient for mass gains, and of all the heavy compound lifts, deadlifts are the least important.

I always say to young guys that one of the best things you can do as a lifter interested in aesthetics and performance is to study the philosophy of Old-School bodybuilders. Old-School bodybuilders were ingenious physique architects. They had a profound knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition, smart supplementation, exercise science and muscle adaptability. If you combine Old-School bodybuilding wisdom with modern, evidence-based science, it's the best, safest, most effective way in achieving a strong, sexy, healthy and aesthetic physique. Vintage Physique by George Kelly is a nice read on the topic.

"you only gain strength by building muscle" Obviously this is not entirely true. There are people that are hard gainers that don't put on weight but continue to gain strength.
@ethanchaney11398 жыл бұрын
The reason they gain strength is their body learning to utilize all their muscle in their body. Some body builders who drove to do a strength program won't build any mass at all of a couple months just because they already have muscle, they are just learning how to use all of it properly. But you're right, the CNS does play a part in the strength you have.

Dino - if you're consistently gaining strength but not muscle, then you're either (1) not doing enough volume (too few reps + not enough sets) or (2) you're diet lacks sufficient overall protein and carbs after each workout. Make sure you work each body part for 9-12 sets, and make sure that at least 6-8 of those 9-12 total sets are performed within the 5-15 (preferably 8-12) rep range. Make sure that you rest at least one full day after you've finished feeling sore on that particular part (could be resting anywhere from 1-6 days - it depends on how you feel). Also make sure that you consume adequate carbohydrates and protein both before and after each workout, and make sure your daily protein intake (especially on the days you workout, or while you're still sore/recovering) is sufficient. Get AT LEAST 0.4g per pound of bodyweight on any given day, and aim for 0.6-0.75g per pound of bodyweight on days you are working out, making sure to constantly have a supply of clean protein. Given that from day to day you are generally eating enough, then the problem is that you're not working out properly - either not enough, too much, or too often, without sufficient recovery. You could be waiting too long between sets or not incorporating sufficient compound exercises, or not burning out each muscle enough, or not hitting every muscle equally. Sounds like some pretty basic mistakes in your workout and/or nutrition planning you're making.
@pokeit2bsure8 жыл бұрын
That is WAYYYY too much. Even dudes on steroids don't do nearly that much. You need to immediately stop doing forced reps. Pick 3-4 (2-3 if you're a powerlifter) exercises for a particular body part, and do 3-4 sets of between 5-12 reps per set on each exercise. Lift to technical failure (you can't do any more reps by yourself) and then rack the weight. That's it. Rack the weight and wait 60-90 seconds (120 at most) and then do another set of the same exercise. Stop listening to whoever is giving you advice to train that much. There's no need to use periodization techniques like drop sets or negatives (forced reps) when you're starting out, and there's absolutely ZERO need to do so much overall intense work. You're killing yourself in the gym for pretty much zero results. You should instead focus on energizing and pumping the muscle by increasing natural bloodflow by doing normal sets to technical failure. Stick to the basics. Give each body part 3-4 days off between each workout, at least. You don't lose muscle or delay muscle building by resting, even if that means an extra day off. Make sure that you consume adequate calories, protein, and carbs throughout the day, making sure to eat at least 5-6 evenly spaced, nutritionally sufficient meals throughout the day. Take a multivitamin, and make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. If you want to try supplements, take some casein in a glass of milk before you sleep each night. Don't obsess about supplements replacing your meals - eat more quality food, even if it means you need to more or less get in the habit of eating when you don't want to.
