"Globalization is on its deathbed," says economist Mike O'Sullivan. The question now is: What's next? Tracing the historical successes and failures of globalization, O'Sullivan forecasts a new world order where countries come together over shared values rather than geography. Learn how big regional powers like the United States and China will be driven by distinct ways of governing trade, technology and people -- while smaller nations will forge new alliances to solve problems.

Greed, jealousy, lust for pleasure and domination... that's where we all come from, our common denominator. Cooperation, intelligence, empathy, on the other hand, are much less common, and even if you have these good graces, you better not deny reality - and your own reality, else it will come back to bite you in the @ss like a sneaky b@st@rd...

@@TheJeremyKentBGross The British PM who supported freedom for India said the British left India when they were afraid that the 2.5 million Indian soldiers were demobilized and were ready to regroup to throw out the British. Look up the information about how Indian soldiers took over Bombay Naval Dockyard before Independence. Gandhi had utterly failed and his last half hearted attempt was the Quit India movement in 1942 which wad crushed by the British. They didn't have an urgent need to leave till they realized the danger 100,000 British faced from 2.5 million battle hardened veterans.

@@sivasidhamalli2199 I don't know anything about that. But at least the one close British friend I had, who was ex military, had very high estimates of Ghandi, and seemed to think he won by using the Britishs own morality against them by putting them in positions of illegitimate hypocrisy. On the other hand, similar tonwhat you said, MLKJ was balanced by Malcolm X, so maybe you need a good cop and a bad cop.

Hello Thomas, I see differently. This is not an exclusive framework. The role that we have to embrace is an integrative approach towards value systems. Of course, in some countries, values cannot adhere for historical reasons. However, we need to build a collaborative awareness that comes from new interactions and learning experience, at business level and social level. These two are interwined now. Finally, I don t see a system. It is an ecosystem that we need to enable by taking action and listening.

The optimism of this presentation is admirable but its based on conjecture and hope. Huge swathes of middle America lie destitute because jobs went global, leaving behind poverty and complete destruction of cities and whole communities which relied on those jobs. They went because of corporate greed, wages were cheaper and more profit could fall to the bottom line. Nothing has rebuilt those cities or communities. The same has happened in the UK and in the EU. Made in Germany once the apogee of quality and reliance, is now made in China. Small comfort for those whose jobs have vanished, along with complete industry’s. Globalisation didn’t address these issues. And that’s what people on the ground care about

I think you're missing the central theme of globalization as your comment is spoken from the point of view of a city or town thats lost jobs. From that singular view point, globalization is bad bc it took from you and gave elsewhere. From a global standpoint, or a point of view not from any specific geographical point, there was simply a transfer of jobs from a richer area to a poorer area and both the loser of jobs and the gainer are now closer to the some equilibrium. All that aside, this only refers to the transfer of jobs, not corporate greed like CEOs and capitalists increasing their wealth drastically more than their employees

@@david88va hes not missing the central theme of globalization. Hes talking about the cost of globalization. Youre talking about the benefits as if the costs dont matter. They do matter. "There was simply a transfer" of jobs? Uh...understatement of the year. How many jobs? Almost 4 million. Whose jobs? American jobs. Who did this? US elected officials with trade deals and trade policy. Did we vote for this? No. Then why did they do it? Because politicians consider corporations to be constituents even though they dont vote...but they do contribute huge campaign donations....ooOOOhhh. i see. But wait ...you got cheap TVs! Globalization is good for you! Shouldn't i get to decide whats good for me? No youre just an ignorant blue collar worker that needs to be retrained. Uh...i disagree.

@@raptango_na6199 I'm not talking about either the benefits nor costs of globalization. I'm saying the video is about globalization dying from a global perspective. The loss of American jobs isn't a "cost" to other countries. The fact that you're talking about American jobs is irrelevant to the Polish or the Nigerians because they didn't benefit from American jobs, they benefit from jobs in their country. My point is that this particular video is about globalization from the point of view of global trends, NOT from a cost benefit analysis for a specific county.

@HMS Blackprice It's not logical at all. People live better lives because of deflation. Most debt is mortgages because the government has an incentive to keep inflating the price of property. The involvement of government and concomitant prevention of a free market is what makes the system socialist. In a socialist system you have to keep paying the government even when you don't need it any more. That is what you wanted.

It is a thinly disguised advertisement for global socialism. Praising leaders with socialist leanings and even treating one of them, the disastrous Nicola Sturgeon as a "leader" of a country that doesn't actually exist. Treating the proto-socialist European Union as a model for society and denigrating Britain, Hungary and Poland as being somehow "immoral" for standing up for values of real people, not social pressure groups. Globalization is controlled by the US securing its allies Products to go everywhere, anywhere by sea, but after the afghan war the Americans are now feeling more and more isolated and would likely return to Isolationism, and with the US mass Oil Production, they are becoming more state-reliance, if that happens, Blockades and trade disruption by sea would be easier, for example you live in china, you rely on Middle eastern Oil, but Iran said no, so they can easily Block all Saudi Arabia's oil, Kuwait Iraq, vice versa and everywhere around the world, literally, the only thing that made them overthink attacking ships is the Americans, because America controlled it like an Iron fist but that is no longer like that, Unions will fall, Wars will Start inevitably, Trade disruption by sea is so easy, and so hard to stop, that it took France to invade whole Algeria JUST to stop Pirates from disrupting trade in Mediterranean sea, now imagine if it's a scale of a whole country, Trade by Air isn't reliable, and trade by Land is not also, looks like all our products that come from china, most oil exports imports, all will gone, rare handful of countries are self-reliant, We're going backwards and most likely to happen in the few upcoming years, the US is most likely to retreat from the Middle east next year, like they did in Afghanistan

I'm not an economist who taught at Princeton, in any event, I don't completely agree with him. The age of globalization was always a hope and perhaps a myth, and some of globalization will probably continue. Google no longer having 30% market share in China (or whatever the figures are) does not signal the end of Globalization. It signals the end of US dominance in a market, perhaps. Mr. O'Sullivan is privileged and is only looking at the "privileged" areas of globalization - such as wealth distribution. We understand the interconnectedness we have as a species, and there have been wins - The fight against ebola, and there is still much progress and much good has come with getting fresh water to the World. For me, the sharing of information is the "crown jewel" of globalization, and it's stress that the more that all of us share information, the more progress, we as a species, shall have.
@terrythompson7535

There can be no "we" as a species while use of state power is used and abused to build and defend monopolies, and intentionally lock knowledge and understanding behind financial constraints. There is only the brutal and merciless domination of the rest of us by psychopaths and sociopaths who view us as food, competitors.. and enemies. There is no "we" while our economic objective is the destruction of other people's family businesses by our own. The ruling class does not wish to compete... they wish to win by default. They wish to DEFEAT the rest of us. There is no "we". Nationalism is just to fool the sheep into thinking they are on the same team as the wolves in order to foster them into weakness and complacency.. ..and internationalism intends to make the wolves inescapable..

"The end of condescension" means here "let's switch focus from Poland and Hungary to somewhere/something else". Not that I defend the governments there - but the speaker seems to forget the societies there are divided and that shifts towards more populist regimes also happen in many Western countries. Especially after a period of others telling them exactly what they should do and of a rising inequality and precariousness in result of that tutoring. It's not a matter of sharing certain values - rather of whether they ring true. What PiS bought support with in Poland was simply introducing an hourly wage floor and a universal child benefit - both common across Europe and absolutely vital for the average citizen who kept hearing of a rising GDP while also earning under 2 euros per hour for years, on "commission" contracts with no benefits or stability but a daily work schedule, no matter what industry one takes into account. How was that fine with European values? How did no one lecture Polish politicians back then that it is not great to let the labor market go wild and play it cheap and cheaper? Why did no one frown upon letting the new investments from European funds be done by firms that run on such gig-economy-minus-the-liberty terms, the lowest bidder wins, at odds the Polish labor code? Suddenly it turned out that new policies could easily be afforded. Once PiS brought a token of fairness and equality with them, it's far easier to go about any rogue agenda.

I don't see this era as the "end" of globalization so much as it is likely the end of the current _phase_ of globalization. Humanity still has many pockets of isolation, but on the whole, for a variety of reasons, it continues seeking and reaching out for other cultures, ideas, and resources. The "era of condescension" is an apt label, and we all know where and to whom it currently applies. Until humanity learns to value humility over humiliation, history shows the question will remain, who will rise to condescend _next_ . All over the world, the people that _most_ resent globalization's benefits to humanity, who also share a preference for authoritarianism, have long enjoyed the largest population numbers and influence over the rest of humanity. They. are. also. aging. out. In their wake, they have left chaos and ruin for the younger generations to clean up. The older people in general have completely dismissed and underestimated the deep resentment they've cultivated in the rest of humanity. Many of their own age peers share the commitment and drive of the young and will join their efforts to change whatever necessary to improve current conditions. The majority of the shortsighted worldwide boomer generation has demonstrated that wisdom does _not_ develop automatically with age. Dismissing and underestimating younger people still proves to be a serious mistake.

Organizing the world on values will be a losing strategy for the West. Countries prioritizing well-being instead of GDP are countries that already have high GDP. China does not prioritize stability and growth over liberty because of it’s culture, rather it’s because a nation that big and diverse is inherently unstable with American style liberty. Even mature Democracies like America and the EU are proving less than stable. Countries around the world face a diverse set of challenges to their survival. They will all have to find their own formula instead of copying China or the West. Likely it will be a range of compromises. The West can’t force countries to chose between values and survival. Nor can it just trade with those with similar values. The future belongs to those that are flexible enough to befriend the world as it is. European globalists are making the mistake of thinking American globalists failed for not being ideologically pure, although I do agree globalism can only be sustained with better wealth redistribution.
@beezusHrist
@beezusHrist 3 жыл бұрын
No, I think ideological purity is a key component of society working as intended. Let us face facts: The United States isn't really about anything while China has a vision for the future. The United States has to figure out what it stands for or it is going to collapse, and other countries will have to do the same. Currently, the United States only really cares about its own personal business interests with no worries about societal benefit of those arrangements. That has to change.

completely agree, with so large a global population, which just continues to rise, there is strong needed to be ideologically homogenized. We've seen the results of emphasizing democratic ideals: ego, crippling inequality and political fragmentation. Whatever value system we adopt, we need to take the focus out of the individual and towards the pursuit of a common goal for benefit of the collective, only then can there be some kind of harmony.

In fact, many of the globalization flaws happened for try to do so much economic growth without to increase and spread well-being statements at the same time.

Bit of a rosy picture painted of globalization there, by which he means the neoliberal era. Global economic growth was actually higher in the 50s, 60s and 70s than it was in the 80s, 90s and 00s, the period he is talking about. Same is true with life expectancy and poverty reduction etc. The "billions of people lifted out of poverty" is partly due to just a few countries, most notably China which was big enough to pick and choose what elements of neoliberalism to apply, unlike most developing countries which had to swallow the whole IMF-World Bank package. There has been a huge net transfer of wealth from the global south to the rich countries during this period, and that has been helped by the policies he is talking about. And this period has resulted in unprecedented ecological destruction which unfortunately may completely undo the progress that has been made in the developing world. Also to credit neoliberal economic policies for democratization is a bit of an insult to the millions of people who took to the streets and toppled dictators from Latin America to Eastern Europe. I'm not against globalization per se, but the neoliberal financialized corporate-led model which has been pursued since the 80s has been very destructive. It led to the global financial crisis, insecurity, catastrophic environmental damage and extreme, eye-watering levels of inequality.

if anything this is a terrifying idea. non-globalism means few ties between countries. few ties between countries means the possibility of competitive superblocks rising with military backing. Every time this has happened in the past it has led to war (cold or very hot) - cold war, world war II, world war I, franco prussian war, napoleonic wars, 7 years war, thirty years war - and that's not even mentioning the extreme chaos of the middle and dark ages. I'm not much of a fan of globalism, but I'm terrified of tribalism and I doubt our civilization will survive if we devolve this way.

Aside from the impacts of Covid-19, this is the first I've heard of a global financial crisis, the end of globalization ... "new world order" is a disturbingly popular turn of phrase for too many. As a manufacturing employee in the US. I am ecstatic that globalization failed as it deserved, and for the idiots who thought it was a good idea. The part the practitioners of globalism never spoke about is the fact that globalization didn't mean merely to extend the trade of wares between nations. What it meant was taking so many jobs like mine and sending them overseas without replacing those jobs that the American consumer as a whole was shut down meaning that new purchases like hones, and cars ground to a halt. Places like Home Depot suffered because no one was buying materials for home building jobs, and remodeling jobs were done only when absolutely necessary. People were not buying new cars for the same reason, they didn't have the money to make such purchases because their jobs had been sent overseas, and so many jobs were sent away that if you could even find a job at all it paid minimum wage. Certainly here in Connecticut you can't live on that. All sorts of services were discontinued for the same reason. You could argue that the fallout from Globalization trickled up to the top where money gets handed down from employer to employee, and then the employee uses that money to buy goods, and services which then goes into other goods and services in the making of parts and materials in the making of those products or the facilitation of those services, which then go back down to all their respective employees. Where the cycle starts again. Once you lay off the consumer times a few million and don't replace his or her job the consumer no longer has the money (the buying power) times a few million to purchase those goods and services. When that happens guess what happens. All the new car and home purchases will stop happening times a few million, (who's going to give you a loan when you're not working?). That's where the banks suffered. Anywhere you go all these economists get into different aspects of the fallout from all those jobs being sent away, but they never make the connection that this was the true source of pf the economic downturn in 2008/09. I really wonder if these economists even truly have a clue about that. This is to say that if all those jobs were left alone, and never sent abroad that whole recession would never have happened. The rampant and unchecked outsourcing of American jobs to other countries was ground zero for the whole downturn.
