Mike Patton is most definitely a genius! There isn’t anything he can’t sing! The whole band is phenomenal! Mike has even recorded opera albums! Patton has a six-octave vocal range, which is considered to be one of the largest vocal ranges in popular music. He uses a variety of techniques in his singing, including crooning, falsetto, screaming, opera, death growls, rapping, beatboxing, and scatting. Faith No More is a true rabbit hole you’ll need to go down! They are so eclectic! Great reaction!

Mike has a huge range and is impressively versatile aaand amazingly experimental, and that in itself is impressive enough. I'll never get why some people believe that that's not enough and need to exaggerate. No one can sing everything. Mike e.g. can reach high notes by sliding up while screaming, but he can't actually sing high. He can't reach high notes directly, he can't sing high notes but only scream them, he cannot stay in a high range, he cannot modulate in a high range and he cannot phrase in a high range. Give him any high range song, e.g. any piece for a mezzo-soprano, soprano or countertenor and he will not be able to sing it. And he will not be able to sing in genres that require a certain training that he isn't trained in, such as opera, contrarily to what some fans claim

Patton is one of those artists who **actually** understands that his voice is an instrument. He doesn't comply with arbitrary notions about what should be done or what is normally done. Faith No More was formed in the 80's and was a quirky rock band, much like the Red Hot Chili Peppers... Primus... Jane's Addiction... Mike Patton (vocals) was not an original member of Faith No More (He joined around 1988)... this performance was from 1992 on the 'Tonight Show' promoting their album 'Angel Dust'... 'Easy' was a R&B cover song, originally by 70's band The Commodores. Faith No More went through a number of members before they found Chuck Mosley (vocals) alongside Jim Martin (guitar), Billy Gould (bass), Mike 'Puffy' Bordin (drums) and Roddy Bottum (keyboards)... and released the indie album 'We care a lot' in 1985. The band was signed by Slash Records in 1986 and released the album 'Introduce yourself'... Faith No More re-recorded the rap-rock single 'We care a lot'... and also released the single "Anne's song" as a music video... However, the band was unstable and vocalist Chuck Mosley was fired in 1988 after altercations w/ Jim Martin... Sadly, Chuck Mosley passed away from alcoholism in 2017. Around 1988, Faith No More enlisted Mike Patton (vocals) from another quirky California rock band - Mr. Bungle... In 1989, they released the album 'The Real Thing'... and in 1990, the single 'Epic' w/ a mix of rap and rock finally pushed the record to platinum sales (1 million copies) in the US and it became a hit in Europe as well. Other singles were - 'Falling to pieces'... 'From out of nowhere'... Rather than push the rap-rock sound, Faith No More decided to experiment on their 1992 album 'Angel Dust'... the single 'Midlife crisis' became a hit and the album sold gold (half million copies)... and had the singles - 'A small victory'... "Everything's ruined"... Unfortunately, guitarist Jim Martin left Faith No More in 1993... frustrated by the musical direction. Mike Patton wrote a majority of Faith No More's "King for a day" album in 1995 w/ guitarist Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle recording the guitars... but the record was not as successful w/ the singles - 'Evidence'... 'Digging the grave'... Guitarist Jon Hudson joined Faith No More in 1997 as the released a stellar record 'Album of the year'... but sales were not as good again w/ the singles - 'Last cup of sorrow'... 'Stripsearch'... 'Ashes to ashes'... Faith No More broke up in 1998. Mike Patton stayed busy w/ various projects like Tomahawk... Mr. Bungle ... Fantomas... etc. The reuinion of Faith No More finally happened in 2009 as the band (Patton / Gould/ Bordin/ Bottum and Jon Hudson) began touring again and released a new album 'Sol invictus' in 2015. However, the band has gone on hiatus again... Mike Patton has been touring lately w/ Mr. Bungle.

Yes, @Bisscute. Mike Patton IS a musical genius. In my opinion he's the best all-around vocalist of All-Time. Plus, Faith No More has influenced so many bands. Especially Nu-Metal bands like Korn and Slipknot. That thing Mike was doing at the beginning is very much like what Jonathan Davis does, but Mike Patton did it long before him. Davis cites Patton as a big influence along with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, which is the band Mike Patton was in before he joined Faith No More.

The commercial stuff was written with commercial stuff in mind, to appeal to the wider audience of the times. All of Patton's, and FNM's, best work can be found in the albums, and Patton's various bands and non-commercial stuff. It's just the way it's always been with them. I've been a fan of FNM since Mosley was singing for them. Time flies. Song recommendations, in no order: The Morning After The Real Thing Zombie Eaters Everything’s Ruined Land Of Sunshine Edge Of The World RV (sort of a joke song, but lower register vocals) Malpractice (this song is nuts, but it shows off his crazy screeching highs) Songs I think show off a lot of his Faith No More voices, as I call them. Thing to understand about Mike is that he’s not afraid of playing around with his voice. He has a blast with it. Also, the band sometimes has a dark sense of humor, and that will come out in the lyrics. ‘Edge Of The World’, for example, is straight up creepy, lyrically, but I put it in there for musical contrast. His vocals on the album The Real Thing are often pointy and nasal sounding, seemingly a deliberate choice. On Angel Dust they’re often rounder, more open, or husky. That said, he does all kinds of other stuff on both albums. I chose them because they are my favorite Patton FNM albums. I'll put this here for reference: Mike Patton, Member of: Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk & Dead Cross Formerly of: Peeping Tom, Lovage, Kaada/Patton, Hemophiliac & Nevermen

Faith No More is kind of an interesting one, that I really only know so much about. They were around for a long time, but weren't really that successful, and were more of an underground band, that probably has their hard core fans, but the one big huge mainstream moment they had was in the late 80s with the song "Epic" and it's music video, that is pretty epic, was really huge at the time, like when I was in Junior High. At least that's how I know them. You should check it out, and I don't want to spoil anything yet, but this is one where you totally should watch the music video! Mike Patton, the lead singer, has done a lot of different stuff over the years beyond just fronting Faith No More though, and he is a pretty amazing singer that does a lot of different genres of music. You can probably find videos of just him doing whatever. This song "I'm Easy" is actually a cover of The Commodores song "Easy". They were like a funk and soul band from the 70s, which used to be my man Lionel Richie's band. I've done a spiel about him before, a very talented song writer and singer, he was one of the main people responsible for making "We Are The World" happen, and you saw him in that, he also wrote the song "Lady" that you saw Kenny Rogers do, and for a while they were good buddies that worked together a lot, and now you might know him as a judge on American Idol.

Faith No More does a lot of weird covers live (so do Mike's other bands). They'll even do stuff like ending one of their own songs by segueing into a little bit of "Ice Ice Baby" or a Backstreet Boys song. I think they just like the contrast of doing an unexpected cover song and, especially with pop stuff, there's probably a little irony in it that Mike enjoys. With his first band, Mr. Bungle, I've heard him do TV theme songs, R&B/Soul, and even a 1/3 speed death metal cover of Billy Squier's "The Stroke" (all while wearing a leather bondage mask and gas station overalls). I'm not sure if it started with anyone saying to them, "Hey, you can't really sing" or anything like that. I had a musician friend in one of my bands many years ago tell me that the most punk rock thing a punk musician could do was to wear a Britney Spears t-shirt because doing so is rebelling against your own genre/audience's uniform. I think that might be a little bit of why Mike and his many bands cover unexpected pop songs. Also, Mike likes a lot of different music. Some of the classics he covers, like "Easy" or his version of "Simply Beautiful" that he does live with Fantomas are probably because he just likes the songs and wants to sing them.

One could expect that kind of "sexy" look and face in, dunno, jazz, pop, soul music, for the masses to "adore"... Like, Robbie Williams, etc... Well, I'm not sure whether his looks made the genre(s) he's in so huge afterwards or is it simply - his enormous talent! 😊But I'm satisfied that you acknowledged both..😉😎 So.... Faith No More was one of the first metal bands that fuzzed metal, funk, pop, rap, and many more genres of music later in their career, creating a unique mix of all of it.🙂 Their first singer, Chuck Mosley, an Afro-American punk-rock rapper, was actually the first who introduced rap in this hard-rock kind of music, but this guy became unstable with his drug addiction, and his voice was far less on point compare to Mike's, so they kicked him around 1988. Very young Mike Patton (21) stepped in from his first highschool super-talented band Mr.Bungle (which you also must hear, just add to FNM mix of genres - all other existing, in their case! 😃)... and the history was born.🙂 4 great albums in 90's plus 1 after big hiatus in 2015... FNM literally influenced all of the so-called Nu-metal bands, such as: Korn, Slipknot, Incubus, System of a Down, Deftones, Rammstein,, Papa Roach, Coal Chamber, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and many more... And non of these are as good as FNM and Mr. Bungle, simply because of Mike Patton's charizma and his great voice...😀This man can sing anything, and I mean: aaaaanyyything...😀 He can sing like a woman, like a dude, like a child, sound like an beautiful angel from heaven and growl and scream like a demon from the deepest pits of hell... So magical and mysterious! And he pulls it off so easily and effortlessly. 😃Somewhere in between all that, he can rap, scat, create "musical sculptures" of cartoon sounds out of his breath...🤪Dunno, maybe the fact that he's born on the same date as Mozart has something to do with it... 🙃🙂🤩He is very prodigal... Managed to sing and create in both FNM and Mr. Bunge (3 albums) simultaneously, to record many collabs with other artists (Bjork, Sepultura, Massive Attack) and later form the additional bands, such as: Tomahawk (county-folk-alternative rock), Fantomas (death-metal experimental-cinematic-comic-core), Mondo Cane (evergreen italian pop), Peeping Tom (hip hop, experimental soul/pop), Lovage (trip hop), Dead Cross (post-metal) and many other projects... That's insane! 😝Momentarily, he's touring with Mr. Bungle with their first, thrash metal incarnation through their long awaited new album that turned out to be just a professional re-recording of their first high school demo album, which was solely in one genre - metal, as I said... But, the real Mr.Bungle (from their 3 albums in 90's) is far more genre-colorful and unimaginable! 🥰 We'll come to that, hopefully.😊 But, regarding Faith No More, I would like to suggest to you next: Real Thing, Epic, Zombie Eaters, A Small Victory, Everything's Ruined, Evidence (the sexiest song & video on Earth!...😎), Ricochet, Just a Man, Ashes to Ashes, Last Cup of Sorrow and, ofc, Stripsearch... 😎 Well, see ya on these next reactions...🙃🙂Bye.

One of my favourite performances by Faith No More is "War Pigs". It's on the Nativity in Black tribute album and was recorded live at Brixton. Amazing cover!
