Mike Patton is one of the best frontmen ever. His vocal range and performances are all over the place. I had a friend who saw them in London's Brixton Academy in the late 80s and he said that he was a bundle of energy all through the show, at one point singing an entire song doing pushups...... Patton is an enigma to say the least.
@undinism696 ай бұрын
Jut to be pedantic, that was in 1990. I saw them on this tour, got to meet Mike and talk about music because he saw my Napalm Death jumper as was impressed someone in Australia had the top I had! We got talking for a bit and he actually got called onto stage for being a little late! haha.
@johnplaysgames31206 ай бұрын
I've seen Mike a bunch of times with FNM, Mr. Bungle, and Fantomas. Every show has been different and amazing, but Mike was definitely that "bundle of energy" you mentioned. Especially in the Bungle shows. One of my favorite memories of Mr. Bungle is from the first time I saw them. I'd never heard a Mr. Bungle song before and had no idea what kind of music they played. I just knew the name from Mike's shirt in the "Epic" video and read somewhere that it was his band from high school. When they came to my town in SoCal, I went into the show having no idea what to expect, and it was just nuts from beginning to end, including the "Welcome Back, Kotter" theme song being sung in both English and Spanish, a cover of Billy Squier's "The Stroke" but at like half speed (or less) with super harsh vocals, etc. But the part that always stuck with me the most is the final song of the night. They played it pretty much all the way through and then, at one point, hit a chord and the entire band just froze onstage. They let their instruments keep ringing out and, almost immediately, the guitar started feeding back on itself. Still, the band stayed frozen in place like statues. At first, the crowd was cheering and laughing and having a great time, feeling like they were in on a fun little joke. Several minutes of growing, horrible feedback later, the crowd started getting uncomfortable, uncertain, etc. A few minutes of continued feedback and frozen bandmembers after that, the crowd started turning on them, shouting insults, throwing things, etc. A few minutes after that, the crowd came back around and started laughing and cheering at the audacity. A couple minutes after that, the guitarist (who was wearing a rubber monster mask, a frilly tuxedo jacket, and boxer shorts with his pants around his ankles) fell over like a tipped statue, the drummer and bassist left the stage, and Mike Patton suddenly launched himself through the center of the drumkit. And that was the end of the show. It was a fascinating experience and the first and only time I've ever seen a song where the audience was the instrument being played by the band. It was genius and changed how I viewed art and music forever afterward.

If you want to hear him kill it with the smooth vocals - Stripsearch is a good one. For more harsh vocals - Caffeine. For a wild thematic journey - King For A Day. The title track 'The Real Thing' is also a very head-spacy and complex track, jazz taps that almost remind me of dnb breaks, and I think it's a philosophic treatise on pudding but excellent smooth vocals.

Mike Patton is amazing. He sings, screams, raps, does everything under the sun. He has something for everyone.

We would love to hear your personal 'false chord engagement' that you "play around with". Please please do a Faith No More cover for us in your voice! We want to see you fully expressed like Mike!

Mr. Bungle - Ars Moriendi (live @ bizarre fest) is a perfect example of his range and technical variety. Great reaction by the way! 👍🏻

Oh boy. The Patton rabbit hole is deep and rich. Go ahead and set aside a few months of your life if you're considering even scratching the surface of his vocal ability.

You’d die over him singing Il Cielo in Una Stanza. Look it up, Mondo Cane.

I went to Faith No More concert back in the early 90s and they sang the Hershey's Alpine White theme at the concert. That haunting melody and then Mike came in with "Creamy White....dreamy white....." I laughed so hard - it's just an indication of what hams these guys cane be too. LOL The concert was so powerful and it was a great experience. Glad you had a chance to hear this and love the commentary!

I would say that harsh vocals aren't exactly what Mike Patton is known for and I understand why people like this version of this song but I wouldn't say that it's typical of Mike. He is an amazing talent.

These are the faces I expect when first hearing Mike Patton. He's seriously otherworldly.

There needs to be more of Mike, but not 'Epic', it doesn't show off his range at all! My pick would be Faith No More - Smaller and Smaller (studio) or This Guy's in Love with You (MTV live). Great reaction!

He's going over the top in this performance for the benefit of the middle of the road talk show audience. Mike Patton is an amazing vocal chameleon. You should check out the documentary of Bjork's Medulla album. All vocal sounds and Patton features on it.

😮It's not a great demonstration of his vocal talents, but I hope you delve more into songs with Faith No More and his other bands Tomahawk, Mr Bungle etc. Tomahawk- God Hates a Coward kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpKkZoGuidqdp8ksi=0b5swGdeQq7TuOVW Mondo Cane II Cielo in una Stanza (he sings in Italian) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpyZYYKfgtZogaMsi=hOXE4fspAp_BkeiH
