A friend of my dad, a caretaker of one of the ranches in those mountains was bragging about how he knew about anyone who was up there and caught them. When I mentioned he never caught me he said a kid would never go up into those mountains by themselves. When I described the truck he was in the previous weekend, his dog in the back riding on top of a bunch of firewood, and that he had cut that wood in a certain ravine and it was live oak and not black oak as he said, he didn't know what to say. He and most people don't know if you aren't in a car, you can hear any car for miles around and even if you stand out on the open they drive by without even noticing.

Tehachapi is hardly nowhere, but it is a unique place with the desert on one side, the high sierras on the other and the most fertile valley in north america on the other. When a kid, from 12 on, used to tell my dad on a Friday night, "I'm going up into the hills, be back Sunday night." Imagine what would happen to a parent now who just let their kid wonder around in the mountains as a kid. Didn't take no survival course, just learned the hard way. In summer I could go out as long as I wanted. The great thing being, once up into the mountains, one almost never saw anyone else.

I moved from Texas Hill County to the Arkansas Mountains two years ago. They're two very different landscapes. This video reminds me to take Mountain survival classes for when my family and I go hiking into the mountains. There are basics for all survival conditions but each area has its different challenges and needs to survive.

Each area having its own challenges is so important to know. You need to have a wide range of skills and understanding, but one thing that tends to get overlooked is how the different seasons have such a huge affect on the landscape and what is available or even possible. If you fail 999/1000 to make fire in a hot dry desert, how many times might it take in the winter with everything covered in snow? The elements really matter and you must prioritize your most dire of needs with the expense of your calories and how much water you have even if all the water you have is what's in your body. An old anti-freeze jug might be all you can find to carry water but that is a lot better than an old oil jug for your water if you can even find any water. Lots of skills are needed and it's a lot better to have them and not ever need them than to need them and not have them and just the basics is a hundred times better than no real skills at all.

Growing up in Utah, I was a Boy Scout and we learned a great deal of these subjects. One thing I never learned correctly, however, was orienteering (navigation with a compass) and NOW I regret that lapse. On the other hand, I have a well-stocked survival kit in every vehicle I own and several plastic totes with disaster prep supplies in them, all informed by those long-ago days.

Most excellent! I took a 30 foot fall on Mt. Elden in Flagstaff, AZ in 1986. SAR tried to use a helo, but just as it was hovering overhead, a front was moving in and they had to wave it off leaving the SAR team to lower me down the cliff face and steep slope to the 4x4 ambulance some 200ft below. That all took almost 8 hours. I had a backpack survival kit with me and used a few of the items to keep hydrated, protected from the elements and signal the SAR team (blinking the flashlight with SOS Morse Code). I appreciate this episode and those who produced it...good stuff, Mike. I fell the 30ft and had some time to think, knowing I was going to fall. I knew gravity was not going to take a break and it was going be something I had no control over. Turning my focus to my Maker and acknowledging this was up to Him must have meant something as I don't remember the fall, just coming-to. I looked over toward a noise to see a squirrel looking at me as if to ask, "How'd you get here?" I thought to myself, "A mistake". I'd landed on a fairly flat bed of rocks, but I felt ok. Later that night, the Emergency Doctor would agree, nothing serious had resulted from the fall. At most, I may have had a mild concussion. I did not have a headache though I had a small bump on my head. My sister clipped the newspaper article and shows it to me on occasion. I still keep in touch with the squirrel. Just kidding, but I do smile about that when I remember my adventure mishap. It could have turned out much differently, but it did not. I have to blame God for the good ending 'cause I got no other explanation.

The smoke also helps chopper pilots see the wind conditions at ground level as they like to turn the bird so it's facing into the wind on takeoffs and landings, similar to an airplane. It just makes things easier.

My number one survival rule is: Never hike in an area that has no water, is too hot to survive the mid day sun and people never lived in. So far this rule has kept me alive.

I like your rules. I went for an innocent hike in a new area and got turned around and lost. I initially panicked then stopped myself realizing I had to get out of the situation and panic wouldn't help. It took me twice as long to get out as it did to get in, but I kept struggling to navigate, and eventually got back to where I needed to be. Needless to say I've been more cautious since. It seems I literally have NO sense of direction and have to rely on the position of the sun and distinctive landmarks.

The one place I wanted to stay when working on the awful NMCI project at China Lake was Ridgecrest, CA. A short hop from Kern County. Great people. Amazing topography. I'd hoped to stay through April, which was when the desert apparently blooms, but it wasn't to be. Death Valley is absolutely stunning at night. We had a Chinese guy with us who didn't know what the Milky Way was. He got a front seat in the best remote area to see that phenomenon. Fantastic people out there. They treated us well, and gave us the full experience of a small town with only two bars. Hope you're all doing well at "The Partners"!

Sort of like a California ferrier. He gets out his forge, makes a big show to bang out a horseshoe, takes three hours, and charges two hundred fifty bucks to shoe a horse. Unlike the others, who go and buy the ready made horseshoes, bend them to fit, hammer it on and charge 40 bucks for the half an hour of work.

Well that's insulting to Thomas why would you assume such a thing? he'd most likely teach you to shoe the horse yourself saving you time and money. no idea what he'd charge for that as nothing was mentioned in the video. @@supposedly1-2 For one, I know that area very well, Tehachapi. Second, been surviving in Alaska for 32 years, and for ten in the middle of nowhere, living off the land, and third, I learned how to shoe horses from a ferrier from Kansas who shoed horses for six months in Tehachapi.

when it comes to survival, EVERY area will have its own challenges... so its a good idea to learn about the area before getting into a situation where survival becomes an issue.. and like having the right gear, sometimes knowing the area is not always possible.. this is where having the basics of survival really can help... and remember the odds of you being nekid and needing to survive are EXTREMELY rare...
