Mike Skinner - The Story of The Streets: "I remember doing 'Don't Mug Yourself' on Top Of The Pops" | www.randomhouse.co.uk/editions...
I remember doing 'Don't Mug Yourself' on Top Of The Pops and being so off my face that it was virtually an out-of-body experience. The strangest thing about my decision to go on live TV in that state is that even though in theory it went against my beliefs, because I do feel it's my job to entertain, I've never regretted it. I didn't feel bad about it at the time, and I don't feel bad about it now. Maybe my value system has room for the idea that someone going on Top Of The Pops completely off their face is actually quite entertaining.
People who watched that performance will obviously have made their own judgement as to whether it was entertaining or not, but I do think there's always been a rubber-necking element to British rock 'n' roll. That kind of car-crash thing -- where you go to see Pete Doherty in the expectation that he might perhaps get electrocuted
-- is definitely something that we cherish in our culture. And it was always important to me to leave open the possibility that when I went out onstage everything just might go completely tits up.
