The original 5 were Mike + the Mechanics: Mike Rutherford, Paul Carrack, Paul Young, Adrian Lee & Peter Van Hooke. That was the magic.

@Jake Monson it's not the same person. The Paul Young in Mike+the Mechanics sadly unexpectedly passed away in 2000 from heart attack. Which left the band with only Paul Carrack singing. They released a last album in 2004 with this line up and did a couple of shows in London, until P. Carrack left for solo musical projects. It is not until 2011 that Mike Rutherford reformed the band with 2 new singers. They have released 2 albums since and did quite a bit of touring

Andrew Roachford's vocal is impressive. I like the subtle edge he has given this song by playing just a little bit with his vocal timing. This is such an underrated band!

Thinking the same thing today whilst it played in the background (original version). Loved it back in the 80s but never knew why. Now it's just other-worldly when it plays.

alan murphy is so missed. That stunning solo on this song can only be played by him. Mike was so smart to bring the best to the table for this album. I'm sure Mike thinks of Alan every time he attempts the solo. - so haunting and selfless

58icarus He did hire a guitar player, just he’s playing bass. Anthony Drennan was Genesis’ touring guitarist in 1998

@@cs0rpc Too bad he didn't go for a guy with a six-string instead. This example is really uninspired, especially compared with Alan Murphy's work on the original studio version. Mike barely touches the tremolo. Murphy worked his like a violinist's bow.
@greg-warsaw47084 жыл бұрын
Hard not to agree. The great talent that MR is and as much as I admire the role he played in music, this guitar work is substandard. Of course he's always been huge on bass and a 12-str. but occasionally he DID shine on a 6-string lead, Abacab live version being a good example, Burning Rope studio version from ATTWH being another. Here, however, I'd rather un-hear it...
@seamusin16974 жыл бұрын
As much as I like Andrew Roachford as a solo artist, this sounds like a karaoke version of the original song. It was bad enough when the group unexpectedly and tragically lost Paul Young, but when Psul Carrack finally left the group that should well have signaled the end to Mike Rutherford.

Pitiful. M & M should have been laid to rest after Paul Young sadly passed way too soon. Rutherford is a fine writer & bass player ,but lead has never been his forte. Having said that the solo on Burning Rope on ATTWT is a fave of mine. All the life seems to have been drained from Mike since the decline of Genesis.
