Tyson was heavily criticized for this performance. What a lot of people didn`t understand was that even compared to other heavyweight boxers Bonecrusher Smith was freakishly strong. Notice how when Smith grabs hold of Mike he makes no attempt to free himself; there was no point. When Bonecrusher decides he`s going to hold you........he`s going to hold you. There is very little you`re going to do about it.

Look Smith cannot hold durring the whole damn 12 rounds. He was just trying to servive. If it wasn't so much money involved Smith would of been disqualified. He really should be fined. He didn't even do anything but hold Mike the whole time. People came to see a fight and not a hug fest.

Can't help but think that Bonecrusher was offered extra, if he went the distance. That was his only goal - survive to the end, rather than trying to win.

Because he had every opportunity to take body shots but chose not to. Why? Who knows. Tyson's body shots are devastating, he'll use them to create openings for uppercuts. I feel he could have ended the fight SEVERAL rounds earlier if he wanted to.

My theory is that Tyson gets preasured from sponsors not to end the fight too quick. Leonard mentioned this in one of Tyson post fight interview. Tyson himself probably wants to have fun in the ring longer in some fights. Watch his fight against Biggs and Green, its obvious Mike simply wants to punish them longer. Just because those fights went the distance it didnt mean Tyson was ever in trouble.

Tyson was lucky, Smith was known to break something. Tyson’s mistake, he headed hunted the entire fight. He could have broke Smith down in the earlier rounds had he took it to the body. this would have opened him up for a uppercut. I believe this fight exposed Tyson since he was so used to getting his opponents outta there in the early rounds. Mike was NEVER the same after Buster Douglas.

Tyson was frustrated with Smith not being able to do what he did best: put dudes on their butts. But Smith was no walkover. A veteran of the sport. In clinches Smith was physically strong and that was frustrating Tyson a bit, testing his patience. It was somewhat of a boring fight in a way? Smith clinched a lot. But exciting cause it was prime Iron Mike that just KO’d Trevor Berbick in the prior fight, and became the youngest heavyweight champ ever, beating Floyd Patterson’s record as the youngest heavyweight ever.

Tyson was close to his peak in terms of boxing skills and quickness here. But the fact that he couldn't stop a very slow Bonecrusher Smith begins to demonstrate that Tyson wasn't nearly as good a fighter as the press built him up to be. Smith, Tony Tucker, and Mitch Green were all in the 6'4" range and Tyson couldn't stop any of them. I believe a young Larry Holmes, who was 6'3" with a very long reach and the second-best jab in history (behind Ali, his mentor) would have given Tyson a very hard time and probably would have beaten him. A young Ali, no contest. Tyson was very exciting in his first two or three years because he fought a string of really bad opponents. Go look up their credentials. He was in the ring with absolutely inferior competition and it was designed to make him look invincible. But as we see here with Bonecrusher Smith, Tyson was far from invincible. Most unfortunate was that he was his own worst enemy. But certain things were out of his control. Once Cus D' Amato and Jimmy Jacobs died and Kevin Rooney left, Tyson's once excellent skills deteriorated and he became a brawler whose legend the press successfully kept alive for a while, but Holyfield laid that all to rest.

I looked up their credentials and Tyson didn’t beat the best competition in history, but he certainly did not beat the worst. He beat very good fighters, and he most certainly beat the best of the mid to late 1980’s… Mike defeated 11 former champions or top contenders #1 contender Pinklon Thomas #1 WBA and IBF contender Tyrell Biggs #1 WBA contender Carl Williams former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes undefeated former undisputed light heavyweight champion and lineal heavyweight champion Michael Spinks heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick #2 contender Bonecrusher Smith former heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs former heavyweight champion Tony Tucker future heavyweight champion Frank Bruno #2 cruiserweight contender Alfonzo Ratliff That is 11 opponents ranked #3 or higher in just his first three years. Tyson is often criticized for his 3 decision wins over Green, Smith and Tucker. That he was frustrated, struggled, ran out of gas, couldn't knock them out, they showed Tyson was beatable etc etc. But the scores were not even close. He beat Green with 9-1 9-1 8-2. Smith with 120-106 119-107 119-107 Tucker with 119-111 118-113 116-112. That's not to bad by a "struggling" Tyson and win is a win, even if it is by decision. I agree that Tyson never would have beaten a young Ali, maybe not a young Foreman with a bettertrainer than Dick Sadler, and probably not a prime Holyfield who simply had Tysons number, but Holmes is another story. A prime Holmes would without question have done a lot better against Tyson, a win would be another matter entirely. A some years younger Holmes struggled against 3 opponents that Tyson simply blew away. Trevor Berbick gave Holmes serious problems and a good run for his money. Carl Williams fought quite like Holmes, and lost a controversial decision to him. And of course Michael Spinks beat him. Tyson annihilated all 3 as easily as he did Holmes. They weren't even remotely competitive, that has to mean something.
