39:30 It's not that Mike wasn't supposed to be a minor character. He wasn't supposed to be a character at all. Remember the episode where he is introduced? It's the one where he shows up at Jesse's to clean the scene of Jane's body. Originally, it was supposed to be Saul who showed up, but Bob Odenkirk wasn't available because he was guest starring in How I Met Your Mother. Hence, Mike's character was created. People often praise BB for its great planning because of its perfect execution, but most of them don't realize that a lot of stuff wasn't planned, and that the writers had to deal with a lot of challenges, that they handled brilliantly. That's what makes them great. First, there's the writers' strike, which shortened the first season. Then there's the fact that Jesse was supposed to be killed off early on, but they kept him because Aaron Paul's such a good actor. You have Mike's introduction, which is pure happenstance due to Bob Odenkirk's unavailability. Then there's Gus. Gus was supposed to be a minor villain who only appeared in a few episodes, but Giancarlo Esposito didn't want to play the role unless he had a long arc over multiple seasons. Luckily, Vince Gilligan and AMC agreed.

I think under a different reaction video someone once commented that the creators of the show supposedly hadn't intended it to really be a "trophy" for Todd, like with some serial killers that actually want to be reminded of their victims, maybe even are somewhat proud of their "collection". Todd isn't proud, he just doesn't care, killing the kid seemed to be the logical and rational thing for him. He saw the spider in a glass and thought it was cool, so he kept it. Which to me still shows symptoms of his sociopathic nature, because you would think any normal human being should at least feel a LITTLE bad and not want to keep anything actively reminding you of the child you "had to" kill and remain so emotionless about it.

It’s interesting how when people watch this show many of them go through this moment where they need to rewrite Walt’s character in their heads. They need to recontextualize Walt and his history into him always having been a “bad guy” because they can’t reconcile having rooted for him the whole time till now. This is ignoring the first episode-that chemistry is the study of change, the bigger and faster the change, the more violent the reaction. Walt was a volatile solution waiting for the catalyst of just the right (wrong) situation, as anyone is.

@fibophi23911 ай бұрын
Actually, turns out I'm wrong also. “Breaking Bad” actress Jessica Hecht, who plays Gretchen, mentioned in an AMC Q&A that Walt left the company and their relationship because he felt inferior. Gilligan confirmed this was true to HuffPost, saying, “She’s correct, and that’s what I explained to her and to [Bryan Cranston] before they shot that big scene between the two of them where they were at the restaurant.” “It ends with him being so nasty to her saying, ‘Fuck you,’ and then she leaves tearfully,” said Gilligan. “In my mind, the interesting thing here - and I always kind of hate to nail it down so explicitly - but let’s put it this way, most viewers of ‘Breaking Bad’ assume Gretchen and Elliott are the bad guys, and they assume that Walt got ripped off by them, got ill used by them, and I never actually saw it that way.” Gilligan explained that the truth is more nuanced. It all stemmed from White’s feeling of inferiority while spending time with Gretchen’s family. “I think it was kind of situation where he didn’t realize the girl he was about to marry was so very wealthy and came from such a prominent family, and it kind of blew his mind and made him feel inferior and he overreacted. He just kind of checked out. I think there is that whole other side to the story, and it can be gleaned. This isn’t really the CliffsNotes version so much. These facts can be gleaned if you watch some of these scenes really closely enough, and you watch them without too much of an overriding bias toward Walt and against Gretchen and Elliott,” said Gilligan.

Regarding Mike getting careless with Walt, I don't think he sees Walt the way the viewers do. Because Mike has his own pride and he does not want to ever give Walt credit. He hates that Walt outsmarted him with the Gale situation, and throughout season 5, he is fuming at every display of competence by Walt. He relishes turning him down when Walt & Jesse invite him into a partnership, and he really hates the reality that he needs Walt to earn the money to protect his guys in prison. After they go into business together, most of the decisions are a pissing contest between him and Walt. In Mike's mind, he is the expert in criminal stuff in general, while Walt is strictly a meth-cook specialist. Mike is the guy with the matter-of-fact, been-there-done-that, seen-it-all attitude, and to him, Walt is just a crazy amateur who gets lucky and has no business meddling in his world. So every time Walt succeeds where Mike thinks it's impossible, rather than teaching Mike a lesson, it just irritates his pride. From outwitting Mike & Gus and having Gale killed, to beating Gus and destroying the lab, to figuring out how to wreck the computer in the evidence storage place Mike thought was impregnable, to robbing the train when Mike said it could not be done, all just kept picking at Mike's ego and making him more and more angry at Walt. I think the only reason he went along with the last two plans was because Jesse had the original idea, and even if Walt's expertise made it all work, Mike could still tell himself this was Jesse's plan and Jesse is his protégé, so they aren't REALLY listening to Walt. So when Mike wants to cash out, beyond getting clear, deep down inside, he wants to win just once against Walt. Acknowledging that Walt is way too smart to be kept secure the best way Mike knows how, is a loss. He thinks he has already defeated Walt's last gambit, by anticipating his plan to swipe the methylamine, and thwarting him, so what more can Walter do? And part of it, is the chance to humiliate Walt, by going back to the old days, when his capacity for violence allowed him to calmly treat Walt like he was nothing. He is enjoying holding Walt at gunpoint, trapped and unable to use his great brain, because you can't outthink a bullet, and he enjoys trapping him in a zip tie, forcing him to sit helplessly. To accept that Walt might be able to escape such a situation would be to give him more credit than Mike wants to. Everything on this show comes down to pride. Hank almost blew up his career, because pride kept him from admitting the truth about his reluctance to accept the promotion, back before the parking lot shootout. Skyler pissed away numerous chances to save herself and the kids from Walt, but pride kept her from admitting that her husband turned to crime behind her back. Jesse let pride drag him back into Walt's partnership after Hank beat him up, despite the reality of everything he said to Walt in his hospital bed about his life since joining Walt being true. He let Gus & Mike appealing to his pride turn him against Walt to a degree and make him reluctant to act against them, even when he had a clear shot in Mexico or the chicken farm summit. Gus let his pride and need for control bring him into business with Walt in the first place, wanting the best meth, and then into conflict with him, thinking he could and should dominate their relationship and not being willing to discard a couple of street trash dealers to stay on the good side of the best cooks in the southwest. His pride would not allow him to let his feud with the Salamancas rest, so he had to rub his victory in Hector's face and hand Walt & Jesse the key to defeating him. And of course, Walt's pride would not let him take money from Gretchen & Elliot or bow out of the business when he had earned enough. The only way Mike is going to survive is by accepting the L and not trying to one-up Heisenberg.
@Gunleaver11 ай бұрын
The writers did not know what Walt was buying weapons for, either, at least when they were making these next couple of episodes. It drove them nuts when they were trying to plot out the back half of Season 5, because they had to come up with an explanation and a purpose for the machine gun in the trunk. Every great idea they had that did not involve Walt using the machine gun, they basically had to dump.

This is what I posted on y'all's previous video awhile ago and pertains to the gray matter subject. The thing about Walter White is, even back then, he was never a good guy, he always had an egotistical complex. Vince Gilligan, the creator, revealed Back when he was at gray matter, him and Gretchen sparked a romance and were gonna get married. But Walter met her family who was rich, he felt inferior around them, and chose to leave, pretty much showing he chose to stay poor till he turned 50. Plus he made it out like they stole his research when in all reality he wanted the company to be all him and his only, never acknowledging their part in founding the company. and possibly push Elliot and Gretchen out of the picture. If he would've stayed, he would've whined and filed a lawsuit to be sure it was his company solely and have all the power. Personally I never liked Walter from the beginning because of the choices he made, I like the other characters more.

Thank youuuuuu!! This whole comment is facts. I disliked Walter pretty early on in the show when I first watched it. And Walter stans are so annoying bc they act like the above isn’t cannon to the story and like Walter is some wronged victim… he’s not.
@christophermetalhead530311 ай бұрын
@@raianthony8492 exactly, he makes himself like he's the victim when really everyone else he's brought around him, whether it's his family or Jesse or anyone else, are the actual victims. Even gus started to notice how much ego and selfishness Walter has.

All of you are right!!! To be fair, I believe the point of the show is to attempt to manipulate the viewer into being on Walt's side and to see him as the main one to root for. It was effective! But it can bring out some interesting perspectives in its viewers...
@blueyeshadow273811 ай бұрын
@@MaynardsSpaceshipyeah I agree if they had chosen to show the gray matter stuff it would’ve taken out some of the brilliance of Walt’s arc its better to have the audience at first think Walt has been good and then show that he never was

Your guys' incessant predictions and gamification of trying to figure out what's going to happen has completely killed your appeal to me, as reactors. You're hardly even reacting anymore, you're trying to guess the end, and then act all smug the times when you've happened to guessed correctly and figured it out beforehand. I've been fans of yours since halfway through your House of the Dragon reactions, but your evolution into "mark my words, Walt is gonna kill Mike right now!" couldn't be farther from the point of enjoying a reaction channel: seeing people REACT to what's actually happening, react to the story, react to the genius of masterful shows, reveals, story arcs. That's the appeal!. Not endlessly trying to prove how smart you are for "figuring it out beforehand." Good luck moving forward--respectfully--but I'm checking out.

Not sure how we came to the conclusion that Walter either enjoys or his ok children to get killed. In fact the ones he had to kill or had a hand in it was matter of him or them. Most people will choose Walt’s choice if it came to that. I believe you guys are judging Walt wayyyyyy too much & not taking into account what happened or who did what as much. Like his wife cheating on him while his out there making money so they are secure once he dies! Just put yourself in that situation it’s not like he could had told his wife her honey guess what I’m making drugs to keep you financially secure! Yes he kept it from her for a good reason yet she just choice to screw her boss told Walt like yea I did him then took his $600K to pay him off bc she cooked his books. Yea Walt made mistakes but it feels like even when his not to blame lately you guys are blaming him. As for Jesse his not 5 yr old baby just bc he shows more emotions doesn’t make him an angel he made tons of mistakes that changed the entire outcome of the course! Otherwise several relationships would’ve been as they were.

You mentioned that Mike was gonna kill Walt and now they're partners. Just sayin'... Most fans have VERY rose-colored glasses on when it comes to Mike. This show is genius because the writers adapted as they went. They have a hard script and stick to it. Jesse was supposed to die at the end of season 1 but after the Gilligan saw the actor portraying Jesse he knew it would be a big mistake. Mike was a character they created to fill in for Saul because he a commitment to appear on another show at the time so Mike was going to fill the spot for that episode.

Each episode I am wondering if this is the one you stop rolling your eyes at Walt, and realize his Ego is 100% justified. Also Jesse isn't "Just as smart", his two vague ideas, the magnet and the straw were simple starting points. Walt took that and developed each plan that they executed. You might be in the hate Walt cult, but this isn't the Ned Flanders show, it's breaking bad, and Walt's final form is emerging.

There are some people just like him walking the earth so he is definitely a lesson for us to learn from. Both psychopaths and sociopaths need to be avoided.
