Seeing this performance "live" on TV in 1995 made me fall in love with my bass guitar. Mike Watt is one of the greatest men to ever grace the Thud Staff. In this performance he is surrounded by superstars, yet he still shines through.

I saw this tour with this line-up headlining. Foo fighters opened up, Mississippi Nights in St Louis, I was not much of a Pearl Jam fan back then but after this show I had respect for Eddie Vedder. He played rhythm guitar and sang backups like a champ and never tried to steal the spotlight.

Yah, Grohl was an awesome drummer. I felt like he felt like he had something to prove after Nirvana and that he could be a front-man. Really a shame because he is such an awesome drummer and arguably the best drummer from the grunge-90's era. Personally I'm not much of a Foo Fighters fan; just not much riveting about them.

Quite simply... That just KILLS! Never was PJ fan, BUT last summer. Eddie Vedder headlined the Ohana Fest at Doheny State Beach in SoCal. He killed it! Plus it was cool that he had lived in the area long ago and is a surfer, He told some hilarious stories about how they'd go to a hardware store and buy all the shit needed to make a home made surfboard leash. With rope and old fashioned rubber bungee cord. He was a 100% honest in his performance and he played his heart out his whole set, Fantastic. Always thought he was cool dude, but LIVE solo. Eddie Vedder kicks ass. Just him, a stool and acoustic and electric. Even a ukulele. Lucky... the sound outside at the beach was perfect. Killer show!!! with Mudhoney and Elvis Costello and X.

Mike Watt is one of the most down to Earth musicians within the past 30 years. I met him in Holland at a show he did. I'm just a complete nobody and he was downright cool to my friend and I. He's also a damned good bass player. Anyone who talks shit on him is just a waste of space and should cut their fingers off so they can't type any more shit online.

I've seen him 3 times and every time he's been out and about before the show, chatting people up. One time in '97 or '98, on the Contemplating the Engine Room tour, his amp gave out about 30 minutes into the set. He apologized profusely and explained it was his backup and they couldn't finish the set, but he asked everyone to stick around and hang out, then he hopped off the stage and parked himself at the bar. And he made sure he spoke to every person in that room (granted only about 20-30 die hards stuck around). I don't recall everything we talked about (it was 25 years ago); mostly small talk, and I remember he asked a lot of questions about me and was totally humble. Just a really good dude.

Reading over some of these comments, I think it's fair to say most folks may not know who Mike Watt is, but those who do can consider themselves in the cool crowd. This guy's a freaking juggernaut on the bass and he's highly respected by those who know their shit. And incidentally, Ballhog or Tugboat? was one of the best albums of '95. Just because few people bothered picking it up doesn't make it any less true.
