So the reason for the grenade launcher function for the MP7 in HL2 actually comes from the development of the game. Originally, the AR2 was going to be based on the OICW which of course had the grenade launcher built in. However, when the OICW was cut, the grenade feature was integrated into the MP7 to give it some extra use and functionality longer in the game.

So, the reason the HL2 smg has a grenade launcher is basically because the HL1 smg had a grenade launcher. The reason the HL1 smg has a grenade launcher is (I think) because at one point, it was going to be an assault rifle, but they couldn't get the balancing right; it either dealt too much damage for the intended pace of gameplay, or it didn't deal enough damage to really "feel" like an assault rifle. Switching the model to an smg got rid of that issue, since it now did what felt like an appropriate amount of damage without hurting gameplay (side note, I think the HD models in later versions of HL1 that people tend to hate make the smg be a rifle again). The reason it kept the launcher through the model swap was 1) it's fun, 2) it keeps it competitive with the shotgun it shares the 3 key with, and 3) they wanted something on that alt-fire button, and aiming down sights was a lot less ubiquitous in games at that time. Most FPS games of that era were still echoing Doom (or some other id software game) to some extent; while you may get a dedicated long-range precision weapon with a scope you can actually use, standard play was hip-fire. Making the alt-fire use the sight would either be pointless because you wouldn't be any better at hitting what you're aiming for, or it would negatively impact the weapon's gameplay, and possibly the gameplay of the whole suite of guns you get in that game by tanking overall accuracy. It would have to be a very different game to what Half Life turned into. That's just my kind of rough rundown, I may be missing some details. I hope you enjoyed my dubiously-accurate game history rant.
@potetobloke47314 күн бұрын
I thought the situation was "There's too many guns that do similar things, let's try to mish mash whatever we have to save resources" and so the OICW and the SMG1 became the SMG2, and the flare launching rifle became the Pulse Rifle, and so on.
@xfreezingturtlex4 күн бұрын
@@potetobloke4731 Admittedly, I'm something of a newer fan, so maybe I haven't heard every version of the reasoning, but I also just think it would be weird if HL1's smg having a launcher on it wouldn't influence the choice to stick on launcher on the version of the weapon in HL2.

I have come up with a head cannon as to why the "assault rifle" is the way it is in Fallout 4. In the fallout universe, the US is split in the 13 (I think) commonwealths rather than 50 states. This gives the individual commonwealths a level of autonomy, much like real commonwealths like Wales and Scotland. I imagine part of that autonomy includes arming their armed forces. So a place like Washington would have their own manufacturing facilities, so they'd get their G3 clones you see in Fallout 3. However, the Boston Commonwealth was putting most of it's funding into The Institute, and was a run by a massively corrupt government (The Mayor had his own personal bunker and the vault in the canter of the city was just one huge scam to get public money), so when they were called to arm troops to fight in Alaska and China they didn't have any funds. So they just slapped whatever stuff they had lying around to make ANYTHING that shoots. Also, with oil being such a precious resource in the Fallout Universe, they couldn't just make a bunch of G-36s, so it's all just metal. I know it's not a perfect theory, and the actual reason why it's like that is because Bethesda is run by gibbons, but this makes it feel like it would fit into the worlds lore a bit more.

The thing I like most associated with the Desert Eagle is the moment in the first Metal Gear Solid when Snake was all like "No, Meryl, you don't want that .50 cal handgun, it's too big for your tiny girl hands, take my current handgun, the SOCOM pistol, which is literally less than an inch smaller." While I know it's meant to be a call-back to Metal Gear 2, I feel like Snake secretly just wanted Meryl's Deagle for the street cred, he didn't actually care about how Meryl handled it or how it performed versus the SOCOM.

The MP7 has a grenade launcher in HL2 because in development it was originally the XM27 OICW. Around the same time, HK started showing off the MP7 more, and having used the MP5 in 1, they felt the 7 was a better fit than the OICW. They wanted to retain the 40mm from the MP5/OICW, but decided to just BS it for time.

I like the idea that guns can talk like in Toy Story and the most advanced of them just refuse to work when held by grunts out of fear.

I missed the episodes where these bits came out but I gotta say Compared to the older, original Gun Rants, Zach sounds a lot happier. And I just think thats great. (Or at least he was for the MP7 bit) On the other hand, I think it might just be that patrolling the Mojave almost makes FNV Zach wish for a nuclear winter.

The Bren Gun is so cool. Great sustained feeding with an assistant, and the amount of VC citations involving a Bren Gun are so numerous it's hard to count.

The comment Mike made about the MP7 being a jack of all trades, Zach sperging out about the full phrase, but not actually refuting Mike, then him realizing Mike is right and he just goes silent for a few seconds as his brain processes that information and reboots itself will always be funny to me.

33:59 Oh come on Zach, it wasn't ALL for nothing. Everybody realized at the end of the day that increasing hit probability was really a matter of giving everybody scopes instead of fancy shmancy guns with their weird ammunition.

One advantage of Cased Ammo that the G-11 does not enjoy is that the brass casing normally absorbs some of the heat from the internal explosion caused by a gun firing. Which helps slow down the rate in which your barrel starts to expand/deform from excessive heat.

The reason I love these gun rants is because it's like a class on the history of small firearms, but it's taught for those with ADHD. Instead of structure and curriculum, it's a teacher with random gun thrown in front of him for the day and just talks about it.

You also used to be able to get the Desert Eagle chambered in something called .440 Cor-Bon. Basically also a necked-down .50AE that used the same bullets as .44 Magnum. On the AR-10, the carry handle actually preceded the trigger charging handle by a bit (it appeared on the third major prototype, the X-03), and only protected the charging handle by happenstance when it was added later (on the first officially named AR-10 version). The carry handle was _really_ there to provide a solid base for the rear sight, which was previously like the FG-42 rear sight and just stuck out there, ready to be wacked by anything and everything. The trigger charging handle got replaced by the T-handle we know today because it got too hot during trials, being so close to the receiver-end of the gas tube and all.

The best part of the G11 and the "Grunt using" issue is that the whole clockwork inside thing was NOT designed to be fixed in the field, if one went fucky the doctrine was supposed to be "immediately toss or turn it in for a new one".

The G11 is my dream gun personally. It was made in the 80s and feels like it came from the far end future. Kinda like a time traveller dropped this thing into the 80s just to see what happens. And it has a wind-up mechanism to boot. I'd not even fire this gun, i'd just have it with me and probably would be learning how it all works. I don't even like guns but this one. This one amazes me.

i feel like the vanilla "assault rifle" was like some guy just looking at pics of early machine guns adding bits and bobs going "heheh its a reference" but had no idea how guns internally actually functioned, which is why if your doing stuff that requires some functional knowledge either do your fking research or hire an advisor whos actually in that field and knows how its supposed to be

They wanted a gun that looked "old" even though by 2077 A water cooled Maxim would be over 190 years old. I find it easer to suspend my disbelief that an AR/AK/G3 pattern rifle would still see use in 2077 than whatever the hell that thing in Fallout 4 is.
