So the reason for the grenade launcher function for the MP7 in HL2 actually comes from the development of the game. Originally, the AR2 was going to be based on the OICW which of course had the grenade launcher built in. However, when the OICW was cut, the grenade feature was integrated into the MP7 to give it some extra use and functionality longer in the game.

The MP7 fired faster, but the MP5K was more accurate and had higher damage. Thus, the median magazine capacity of 45 - between 60 and 30!)

So, the reason the HL2 smg has a grenade launcher is basically because the HL1 smg had a grenade launcher. The reason the HL1 smg has a grenade launcher is (I think) because at one point, it was going to be an assault rifle, but they couldn't get the balancing right; it either dealt too much damage for the intended pace of gameplay, or it didn't deal enough damage to really "feel" like an assault rifle. Switching the model to an smg got rid of that issue, since it now did what felt like an appropriate amount of damage without hurting gameplay (side note, I think the HD models in later versions of HL1 that people tend to hate make the smg be a rifle again). The reason it kept the launcher through the model swap was 1) it's fun, 2) it keeps it competitive with the shotgun it shares the 3 key with, and 3) they wanted something on that alt-fire button, and aiming down sights was a lot less ubiquitous in games at that time. Most FPS games of that era were still echoing Doom (or some other id software game) to some extent; while you may get a dedicated long-range precision weapon with a scope you can actually use, standard play was hip-fire. Making the alt-fire use the sight would either be pointless because you wouldn't be any better at hitting what you're aiming for, or it would negatively impact the weapon's gameplay, and possibly the gameplay of the whole suite of guns you get in that game by tanking overall accuracy. It would have to be a very different game to what Half Life turned into. That's just my kind of rough rundown, I may be missing some details. I hope you enjoyed my dubiously-accurate game history rant.

I thought the situation was "There's too many guns that do similar things, let's try to mish mash whatever we have to save resources" and so the OICW and the SMG1 became the SMG2, and the flare launching rifle became the Pulse Rifle, and so on.
@xfreezingturtlex2 ай бұрын
@@potetobloke Admittedly, I'm something of a newer fan, so maybe I haven't heard every version of the reasoning, but I also just think it would be weird if HL1's smg having a launcher on it wouldn't influence the choice to stick on launcher on the version of the weapon in HL2.

I have come up with a head cannon as to why the "assault rifle" is the way it is in Fallout 4. In the fallout universe, the US is split in the 13 (I think) commonwealths rather than 50 states. This gives the individual commonwealths a level of autonomy, much like real commonwealths like Wales and Scotland. I imagine part of that autonomy includes arming their armed forces. So a place like Washington would have their own manufacturing facilities, so they'd get their G3 clones you see in Fallout 3. However, the Boston Commonwealth was putting most of it's funding into The Institute, and was a run by a massively corrupt government (The Mayor had his own personal bunker and the vault in the canter of the city was just one huge scam to get public money), so when they were called to arm troops to fight in Alaska and China they didn't have any funds. So they just slapped whatever stuff they had lying around to make ANYTHING that shoots. Also, with oil being such a precious resource in the Fallout Universe, they couldn't just make a bunch of G-36s, so it's all just metal. I know it's not a perfect theory, and the actual reason why it's like that is because Bethesda is run by gibbons, but this makes it feel like it would fit into the worlds lore a bit more.

@@ssjbread2803 in my head cannon, the Service Rifle was a Civilian rifle pre-war rifle, and was adopted by the NCR because of ease of production in the post-war world (hence the wood furniture). pointer for Zach: - the MP1 was supposed to be the designation used for the Beretta MAB38/42 smg used soon after WW2 by the West German border police (BGS). Not many know of that since it was pretty limited in numbers (around 5 to 10.000 were delivered) and used by a lesser known German law enforcement agency. - MP2 is the name for the Uzi SMG license-built in West Germany and used by the West German Army (Bundeswehr) from the 1970s to the 1990s
@Randomly_BrowsingАй бұрын
Is MAB38 were by Beretta that Italian used during WW2?
@DonPatronoАй бұрын
@@Randomly_Browsing Yep. the reason as to why the BundesGrenzSchutz used the MAB38 was because before the end of WW2 the German police had placed an order for smgs to Beretta, that had been partly paid in advance, but the invasion of Italy first in 1943 and Germany later in 1944-1945 blocked everything. After the end of the war, when the BGS was formed and had to be armed, they reused some K98s from police armories, and asked Beretta to deliver upon that order. The MAB ended up being used well into the early 70s when it was replaced by the MP5.

The neat thing about the MP7 is that you can use it as a sidearm by folding both stock and foregrip and keep it in a holster.
@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz2 ай бұрын
The MP1 is presumably the MP40, and the MP2 is the Uzi. Ironic, I might add. (A grenade launcher on a submachinegun would be good for SWAT and Riot Police. Niche, but better than having to carry a second weapon just to fire tear gas or smoke)

i feel like the vanilla "assault rifle" was like some guy just looking at pics of early machine guns adding bits and bobs going "heheh its a reference" but had no idea how guns internally actually functioned, which is why if your doing stuff that requires some functional knowledge either do your fking research or hire an advisor whos actually in that field and knows how its supposed to be
@Dhips.2 ай бұрын
They wanted a gun that looked "old" even though by 2077 A water cooled Maxim would be over 190 years old. I find it easer to suspend my disbelief that an AR/AK/G3 pattern rifle would still see use in 2077 than whatever the hell that thing in Fallout 4 is.
@filmandfirearmsАй бұрын
@@Dhips. The AR platform has been in service with the US military since the 1950s. The Air Force were first to adopt it, and the Army soon followed suit. Everything after that was just refinement which still would've happened in the Fallout universe. The AK has seen nearly a century of continuous service and shows no signs of going away any time soon. Even the original AKMs still see use, with Russia using it for basically the same role that the US uses .300 Blackout, since it turned out that 7.62x39 actually suppresses really nicely. Even more modern styles of gun are based on old designs. Most European service rifles today use an AR-18 action. The G36, the L85, the AUG, the VHS-2. If it isn't an AR-18, it's probably an AK, like the Polish Beryl and everything coming out of Zastava. All this to say that it isn't suspension of disbelief to have them in Fallout. WW2 happened just as it did in the real world, and everything that led to modern firearms design came from lessons learned during WW2. It's reasonable to assume that the Fallout universe might have stuck more to mid 20th century styling, as seen with the NCR Service Rifle, but the designs would still exist
@Dhips.Ай бұрын
@@filmandfirearms Everything you said that applies to our reality I agree with, however I don't see the AR15 being used 50 years from now by the military, unless we've truly plateaued and nothing new ever comes out As for Fallout: I think the firearms found in the games before 4 fit the setting. As I said I can see a G3 or AR platform rifle having use in their world before the bombs dropped. Way more than whatever the hell that gun in 4 is. In a cannon where the P90 and Marksman Carbine (the modern looking AR15 from NV) exists I can't see that abomination seeing any use.
@filmandfirearmsАй бұрын
@Dhips. Militaries are far more concerned with cost and reliability than anything else. Considering the resource shortages in the Fallout universe, those are even more important. The Mauser action is still in military service around the world to this day, despite being about 150 years old, it's just being fit into modern chassis. It's cheap, effective, and reliable, so there's no reason to replace it, it just needs to be fine tuned every decade or so

I've actually had the good fortune to shoot one. It wasn't mine, a regular at a range I worked at let me shoot it. Believe it or not, it's actually quite easy shooting. It produces one hell of a fireball, though. I have a photo of me shooting it as I pulled the trigger, and you would not know that it was 6 pm in December in Washington. It was 30 degrees out that day, but my face felt like I'd been standing in front of a heater. I didn't hit anything, I kept anticipating the recoil and hitting the dirt, but it was a lot of fun

One advantage of Cased Ammo that the G-11 does not enjoy is that the brass casing normally absorbs some of the heat from the internal explosion caused by a gun firing. Which helps slow down the rate in which your barrel starts to expand/deform from excessive heat.

@6:00 This was probably answered in the comments of the original video, but MP1 and MP2 were designations used by the Bundeswehr (German Military) and the Bundesgrenschutz (Borderguards) for the Beretta Mod.38A of WWII Vintage and the UZI respectively. The the Mod.38 was esteemed by the whermacht and SS and was primarily used by the BGS after the war, who used a number of WWII Vintage items, whereas the MP2 was the standard issue for vehicle crewmen from the 60s until it was replaced by the MP7 in the 00s.
